Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

2.5 litre trans-axle with a near 50/50 weight distribution makes the 944 a superb handling machine.

Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the Porsche 924 as their entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as an even lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front-engine Porsche because it didn’t have the Audi sourced 2.0 litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5 litre straight-4 engine which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine. Based on the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panel and a larger rear spoiler. In 1985 the 944 underwent its first significant changes. The interior was given a facelift and a much more modern feel and look with a completely new dash and door panels, and to help keep those lines nice and smooth, the radio aerial was moved from the standard vertical position to being embedded in the windshield. Other changes included new front and rear cast aluminium control arms and semi-trailing arms, and a larger fuel tank.

In 1987 to mark the 100,000th 944 produced, Porsche released the 944 Celebration, a special edition model of which just 930 were made, and it’s thought only ~30 made it to the UK, making this quite a rare model 944. This example comes to market from ~6.5 years ownership with a Porsche enthusiast, and part of a collection of 3 "Anniversary/Celebration" editions. It has just 5 former keepers registered, and presents in remarkable condition given the age and mileage it has covered, take a look through the listing to see the detail.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I remember seeing a 944 with the iconic pop-up lights as a 12 year old boy in a petrol station, looking back at my dads Cortina, I promised myself to buy one one day.

Paul purchased this 1987 Porsche 944 Celebration ~6.5 years ago. Always a fan of the 944, it was the one to get being a special edition model. He owns two other special edition Porsches. He goes on to tell us "It’s an absolute beautiful car to drive, dare you to try and not smile and grin, this car has been so reliable loved and respected".

The cars were stored in a glass-fronted garage at Paul’s previous house, which was perfect to see them, but this also meant they weren't really used, as you can see from the MOT history for the past few years. With the house now sold, the cars have since been in professional storage and used even less, so Paul has decided to part with his collection and purchase a motor home to enjoy with his wife. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the cars in the comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The 944 has a lovely shape to it through the flared wheel arches and in true 80s style - pop-up headlights.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original "teledial" wheels, these are in excellent condition having likely been refurbished at some point. The tyres are all matching Continentals with a good amount of tread remaining.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The 944’s bodywork is in excellent condition, with obvious no dings or dents to mention, and the shut lines all appear to be equal. There is just a small amount of blistering on the rear lower sections of the sills worth mentioning, typical for this model, but this hasn’t broken through the paint.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Zermatt Silver" (LY7Y), the 944 presents very well. The finish and colour match across the car looks good, no obvious signs of paint work etc. There are some minor age-related stone chips on the front bumper, but nothing excessive and in line with the recorded mileage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no apparent scratches, and the window seals look to be in good condition.

In true 80s style, the pop-up headlights work as expected and are free from chips. The rear lights are also in good condition, with no splits or cracks in the lenses, and the rubber trip elements across the car look good too.

Interior

The later oval-style dash gave a more modern feel to the 944, the check patterned cloth interior on this Celebration Edition oozes retro stying.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the Celebration 944 has stood the test of time really well. The "Studio" fabric material is in good order, with no real wear to be seen in the usual areas, such as the driver’s bolster. The door cards are in good condition with no noticeable scuffs or damage. The rear seat material has signs of looking a little thin to the top, typical for this model and probably caused by UV rays from the huge rear window rather than use.

The carpets throughout are in nice condition with minimal signs of wear. There is a set of fitted mats which are also in good order. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard in the 944 is the later oval-style dash which is in good condition, no warping or cracks to the top that you can often see with cars from this era. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer is reading 99,072 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original black leather steering wheel has a small amount of wear, and the stitching has started deteriorating across the middle section at the top. The gearstick is in good condition with just light signs of use.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 2.5L 944 produces a respectable ~158BHP delivered to the rear wheels via the manual gearbox, and can achieve 0-62MPH in ~7.4 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine fires up as it should, with no untoward noises coming from one of Stuttgart's finest. Paul reports there are no issues with the running of the car.

The car drives and pulls well through the five-speed trans-axle gearbox, which has a smooth change, and no unwanted noises are coming from the drivetrain. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The 944 sits well and out on the road it handles as expected, with no noises coming from either corner.

The brakes bring the car to a halt as they should in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Being a trans-axle car, the 944 has a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. This gives you great confidence in the car around the twisty bits as it enables you to place it perfectly, and it reacts just as you like.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear looks to be in good order with minimal signs of wear to the buttons and dials, and everything is said to be working as it should with the exception of the typical digital time clock, and the rev counter. There has also been a Sony head unit fitted.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~6.5 year ownership and part of a collection of special edition Porsche cars, this example had a complete engine rebuild was carried out in 2003 at 52,697 miles.

There is a nice collection of invoices for the 944, which show some substantial work being carried out, such as the engine rebuild in 2003 and a clutch in 2015. In addition, there are other invoices for cambelt replacements and servicing, all of which suggest a well-maintained Porsche.

Previous MOT certificates are also included, the 944 comes with a current MOT, which expires 17.05.2024, it passed with no advisories.

This is a rare chance for you to become the proud owner of one of the most popular Porsches throughout the 1980s, and the icing on the cake is it's a sought-after celebration edition.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

sorry – found the plate and have looked at the mot history. The car has been laid up for 6+ years – when were the belts last done and what was done to the car to recommission it last year? How old are the tyres?
