Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The first production front engined, rear wheel drive, water-cooleded Porsche, the 924 S is deceptively quick.

Clothed in the deceptive slimline body of the 924, the S version is something of a well-kept secret. Powered by the ~156BHP 2.5L overhead-cam engine version of the 944 engine, with its four-wheel vented disc brakes on upgraded suspension, the experience is just as exhilarating as its brasher sibling. It combines all of the virtues expected from a Porsche, with an added practicality and the ability to cope with modern conditions, the 924 S is often considered the best all-rounder in the range avoiding some of the drawbacks of the marginally quicker but troublesome Turbo. As a result, it is the one to go for today. Yes, it originally served as an entry-level point for the brand, but the driving experience is every inch a Porsche.

This model is one of the later cars to be imported into the UK. Finished in seductive Ocean blue, it has seen just 3 owners over its lifetime, comes with paperwork showing over £8,000 spent and is well presented both inside and out.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Victor the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Attracted to its ease of DIY, its healthy parts availability, the cars good history and overall positive condition of the Porsche, these were key factors in buying this example. Exterior

The exterior condition suggests this car has been in careful hands all its life.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 5 lug wheels, an upgrade the S came with, they allow the space for the uprated brakes that this model came with too. The attractive "Teledial" alloys are in excellent condition, with no signs of significant wear. The tyres are over 10 years old, and show signs of age but are all within legal perimeters.

Bodywork

The car has equal panel gaps throughout, with even fitting panels and components. All of the doors open and close with no obstructions or trouble. There are no major issues with panel damage, with just the front air dam showing light damage, but overall the car is in good shape.

Structurally the car is solid, with no outstanding issues in regards to the floor pan, inner wings or engine bay.

Take a look through the media to see the car up close.

Paint

The Ocean Blue paint finish is good throughout, with an even coverage and decent shine. There are a handful of minor age-related marks noted on the car, particularly the front/bonnet area but it is free of significant chips and no overwhelming evidence of poorly matching paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with no outstanding damage or wear. The bumpers hang well, with no damage noted on the lenses or lights - the pop-up headlamp mechanism works well.

The rubber sections, such as the front over-riders and rear spoiler are in good shape, with no issues in regards to the glass seals.

Interior

Well furnished and snug, the cabin is in fine shape, the steering wheel providing familiarity with other Porsche models.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats have worn well over their lifetime, with just the driver's seat showing minor wear on the outer bolster. All are free from rips or tears.

The mats, carpets and headlining are in good condition, with no damage just the usual signs of age. All carpets and fabrics, including the boot item, were dry and there were no signs of damp damage. There are minor suggestions of age are noted on the door cards but are still presentable.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are in very good order, with no outstanding issues with its presentation. The switchgear is good, with no reported issues with any of their function. The dials are legible with no glass or binnacle damage. The car has been fitted with a DAB/USB/iPod Sony player.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Porsche's 80s/90s steering wheel takes centre stage, providing a familiarity with other models like the 911. There are no issues with the steering wheel, the leather has worn slightly in places but still presents well. The gear stick is in good condition, with the gaiter in excellent condition.

Mechanics

There is plenty of evidence of regular maintenance on this feisty four cylinder.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine runs well, starting up with no issues and idling with no undulations. The car has undergone a positive compression test, in addition to its cambelt, water pump, ignition lead, timing belt and its central tube being replaced.

The car drives well on the move, with no issues with the gearbox, clutch or the performance of the engine. No issues were noted with oil pressure or engine temperature. The exhaust is in good condition. Watch the video to see the engine in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The S came with uprated suspension and brakes to match the more powerful 2.5L 944 engine that powers it. The cars ride is typically firm, but cushions the road bumps well, with no knocks. The brakes are effective, with no vibrations or juddering on the move.

The Drive

It handles well, feeling nimble and manageable on the country lanes. The appeal is driver-orientated and the quality of engineering has been retained in this example.

Gripping well on the damp roads, the engine is willing and capable of tackling modern road conditions in its stride. The seating position, excellent visibility and engine/steering feedback are excellent. There is no doubt you're driving a Porsche here.

Electrics and Other

The sunroofs operation will need fettling, it opens and seals well but was one of the few items of unfinished jobs. It is leak-free.

History and Paperwork

Maintenance bills tally up to over £8,000 over the last 10 years, a cracking example of the 924 S.

The car is a UK spec model having seen three long term owners prior to Victor taking it on in 2020, but was taken and used in France for several years before returning back to the UK. As a result, it has both a healthy amount of French and British paperwork. Much of it deals with the car's servicing, maintenance and sundry items. While the car was registered for use in France, it also underwent a regular routine of maintenance with around 2,500 Euros worth of work carried out in the 2000s. When it came back to the UK in 2014, it received a further £2,500 worth of work, including a clamping sleeve, new stereo and speakers, service, ECU repair and an airflow meter. Recent invoices total in the excess of £2,500, covering welding and maintenance items. The cars cambelt and water pump have also been attended to recently. It has an MOT to May 2022.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

Can you comment on the condition of the other sill please? Are there any receipts relating to the repair of the corrosion failures at the last MOT in May? Noticed that the other sill was replaced in March…
