Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The 911 in its desirable 964 form; air cooled flat-six, all-wheel drive, manual gearbox and finished in glorious Guards Red - this example is one you can enjoy and cherish.

Considered a true successor to the Carrera 3.2 of 1984-89, the 964 was designed with all the great elements of the original Porsche, while beautifully incorporating more modern styling of the era.

The 964 represented a natural evolution from its predecessors, and despite bearing similar visual cues, it underwent significant updates that combined the character of previous models with a more 'modernised' '90s style.

This particular 911 is coming to the market with a substantial stack of servicing receipts from its history and is finished in Guards Red.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Dean the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved the idea of owning a classic Porsche, especially in the most iconic colour; Guards Red.

Dean, the current owner, had always dreamed of owning a classic 911 Porsche, especially one in Guards Red in cabriolet form, so when he saw this car come up for sale, well it was an easy purchase decision.

However, Dean hasn't owned the car that long and more recently he decided that his larger and more luxurious R107 and R129 are more in line with his classic car preferences. As a result, he has decided to part ways with this lovely Carrera 4 and asked us to find it a new home.

Dean will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The Guards Red pairs incredibly well with the curvaceous yet sporty bodywork of the 964.

Wheels and Tyres

On this example, the wheels appear to be well-cared for, with no obvious damage to any of the spokes from our observation, however there are just the slightest signs of bubbling beginning to show.

The front wheels are fitted with Yokohama tires, and these also look to be in good visual condition. The rear wheels are fitted with Continental ContiSport Pro tires dated 2004, however they have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this 964 appears to be in very good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car aligning well - the car presents very well.

Being picky, we did just notice a very small dent in the passenger's side door and some minor bubbling at the bottom of the nearside front headlight.

We've provided a more detailed view of our observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive assessment of the car's condition.

Paint

Finished in the iconic 'Guards Red' colour, the paint is of a lovely standard, with even coverage and consistent color across each panel.

We did notice the occasional very small and minor stone chip at the front of the car, although you'll have to get really close to notice these.

Once more, we have captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this 964 example looks great and appears in line with the age of the vehicle. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discoloration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, consistent with the rest of the car's condition.

The bumpers, grille, door handles, and window surrounds all look to be in good condition as well.

Please refer to the exterior photos to see both the tonneau cover and convertible hood in great condition, without any tears or rips.

Interior

Inside a full leather interior with the classic 911 layout make you aware you're sat in something really special.

Seats and Carpets

The light coloured leather seats with black piping have retained their shape very well over the years, as you would expect from cherished and careful ownership.

There are some slight signs of age on the seats in terms of the expected creasing in the leather that comes with age.

A similar story is observed with the leather door cards and carpets.

Please review the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this 964 shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~77,176 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original and classic Porsche steering wheel is fitted.

The steering wheel is in great condition, and looks in line with the mileage of this car - the leather gear stick also looks well-maintained.

Please check the image gallery for more details.

Mechanics

With 24 main and specialist services over its life this 964 has received a very high level of maintenance - exactly what every buyer will be looking for.

Engine and Gearbox

Dean reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual five-speed gearbox powering all four wheels.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the 964, and the smart rear engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping country roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Porsche from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

Out on the drive the car gave plenty of acceleration on the journey. Gears felt smooth running through the 5-speed manual gearbox and the engine sounded lovely with no issues that we observed.

Overall a really smooth and enjoyable drive with the Porsche working as it should, catching admiring glances from passers by.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics during our visit, but Dean confirms that all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the overall condition of the car.

The car is equipped with a Becker stereo unit.

History and Paperwork

Guards Red, manual and 23 Service stamps - we know this 964 is going to be highly sought-after by Porsche lovers.

This car possesses a great deal of originality and is equipped with the desirable air-cooled 3.6L engine, which delivers that extra bit of power compared to the earlier models. The car includes a black tonneau cover and a black convertible hood.

For a comprehensive look at its history and maintenance, please refer to the history and paperwork media, which includes previous MOT reports, servicing records, and a list of parts that this 911 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet has received over its lifetime.

HOT 1 as seen in the photos is not included in the sale - the registration is H3 POS.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, yes it does and it’s mentioned in the Key Details section and there’s a screenshot of it in the paperwork. Please review all the images and listing in detail if you decide to bid. Thanks Adam

Do you know if the headstuds have been seen too? These can cause a pinking/tinking noise when engine running and oil leaks. Most had to have new delivar studs put in around this mileage. Also, clutch?
