Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Arguably one of the best 964s to have come to market in recent times - this is a special car for a discerning 911 buyer.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (964) sits at a fascinating crossroads in 911 history - a classic silhouette infused with modern engineering.

The 964 generation blends the raw charm enthusiasts crave with meaningful advances like standard all-wheel drive, ABS, power steering, and a refined 3.6-litre flat-six producing ~247 BHP. From the outside, it’s unmistakably 911 - round headlights, wide hips, timeless proportions - but beneath the skin it’s a far more sophisticated machine than its predecessors.

The result is a car that feels both analog and reassuringly capable, equally at home carving a mountain pass or cruising effortlessly, and one that perfectly captures Porsche’s evolution in the early 1990s.

This example is something a little more special than the norm. With a subtle and expensive modifications completed, including; new ARP engine bolts, updated heads, race pipe exhaust, new oil lines, oil cooler, fuel lines, bodywork modifications, updated wheels, Recaro seating, upgraded steering wheel, interior re-trim, new stereo, new lighting, heated RS rear screen, and a flawless respray to 'Rosso Corsa' to top all the works off.

The original sunroof has been professionally deleted with TIG welding completed to cover the area and a notable update is the KWV3 suspension HLS lift system, which we capture in motion on our Mechanical Review video.

Not only this, but the Porsche has benefitted from a full engine rebuild, gearbox updates and a upgraded RS flywheel and clutch - all this, and the 964 hasn't covered more than ~4,000 miles since the works completed.

Coming to market from just over ~13 and a half years with our vendor is a very unique and special car, the 964 takes all the original 90's Porsche style and feel and brings the drive quality up to a more modern era.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Greg the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Simply my pride and joy - it's been a labour of love and I'm really proud to have made this into what it is today.

The current owner, Greg, has always had a passion for Porsche cars, especially the older style models. When this 964 came across his eye, he knew it was a car that could be something a little more special than the standard. Greg said, "The Carrera was one of those cars I had a poster on my wall when I was younger, getting the chance to own one has been a dream".

With a vision of making this Porsche something that really stood out, Greg set about carrying out a great amount of restoration and upgrades. he went on to say, "I wanted to bring my Porsche up to a more modern spec, but with all the good classic look and feel. Completing updates to the mechanics and bodywork has got it to where I wanted it to be".

Having travelled very few miles since the main restoration, the Porsche's time on the road is limited, mainly appearing at local car shows, he said, "I take it to a few events each year, and its something I'm really proud to show off".

Greg is only selling due to the chance of a new car he's been after for a while - make no doubt, this has been a difficult decision for him to bring to market, but now is the time.

Should any questions be required, Greg will be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Wearing its heritage very well, this 911 takes all the classic elements of Porsche style and adds some well suited modifications.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 19" multi-spoke BBS E88 alloy wheels with black BBS centre emblems. All appeared to be in lovely condition, and it was clear this area has been well looked after. A real highlight of the 964. To note, the original wheels were Design 90 and have since been sold.

The front and rear of the 911 is fitted with Falken tyres. To the front, there is a spec of 215/35, and to the rear, 255/30.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned and no dings or dents were spotted when looking around the car. The bodywork of the 911 showed in lovely overall condition and we noted no concerns with corrosion or bodywork issues.

Additional modifications have been carried out to the body, including a reduced number plate recess and a sunroof delete. The former sunroof aperture was professionally TIG-welded. These changes, along with the lower stance (which can be returned to standard height) and the upgraded wheels, are the only significant deviations from external stock specification.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The Porsche was originally finished in Guards Red but has since been treated to a full bare-metal respray in its current Rosso Corsa finish. Coverage is uniform across the entire car, with no imperfections noted in colour or application. To be clear, the paintwork is exceptional, both in the quality of preparation and the final glass-like finish, and we would challenge anyone to find a higher standard.

The work was completed by Greg and his team at Southam Bodies, a renowned paint specialist known for delivering some of the finest finishes for both UK and EU customers, regularly entrusted by clients seeking the very best.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows and updated RS heated rear screen show in excellent condition, and we could see no signs of scratching or chips on the glass.

Front and rear lights all appear without issue - the lights have all been replaced with genuine parts and new lights have been fitted to the rear.

Badges and emblems are present and look very smart.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The interior cabin trim sections showed in excellent condition after the re-trim as part of the restorative work.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

Every dial, switch, and stitch is built for the pure joy of driving - with a re-trim and special upgrades, this 964 sets a new standard.

Seats and Carpets

The beautiful Recaro seats looked fantastic and showed without any issues. These were upgraded as part of the interior restoration, as were the rear seats - which appeared to be barely used.

Black carpets and Porsche mats show in excellent condition, with the boot reflected the same standard as the cabin, showing remarkably well. Underneath the cabin carpets on the floor pans, showed no concerning issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in excellent shape, no issues and no concerns here - just stunning.

The classic 5 dial set up in the Porsche finished in black looked excellent too, and these were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~83,292 miles at the time of our visit.

The switches and controls all appear to be in lovely condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge and oil temp and were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The MOMO Porsche steering wheel has been tastefully upgraded, in keeping with the era of the car and no issues observed.

The gear stick shows in great condition, all numbers were clearly legible. Overall, very nicely presented in the cabin area.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With an engine rebuild, gearbox upgrades and new RS flywheel and clutch, this Carrera 4 is well equipped for the road ahead.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up, we noted no concerns and the Porsche performed without issue when out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all.

The manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the 911 through the gears. The Porsche has benefitted from a great amount of mechanical work as part of its restoration, the engine remains original but has been rebuilt by Milestone 71. The gearbox has had work completed, new oil, fuel lines and oil cooler have been updated, and an upgraded RS flywheel and clutch has been fitted.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no observed issues and the car felt solid on the road.

A key upgrade on the 964 is the addition of the KWV3 suspension HLS lift system. The car runs low to the floor as a result of this, but is easily adjusted for the ride height as required. We cover this feature in our mechanical review video.

The Porsche brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem, and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the video and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

The 911 drives now as well as it ever ha - a smooth drive and plenty of power out on the road, it really is a car with a classic heart but with well thought through modifications.

Please watch the On-the-Road video to see the car being taken for a drive around the local area. One small thing, our consigner does call the car 1993 and it's 1992, as you can see in the paperwork.

image

Electrics and Other

The 964 features an upgraded Porsche media system with a USB port.

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great overall condition.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Greg told us everything was in working order as far as he was aware.

image

History and Paperwork

With a keen focus on upgrading a classic, the specialist modification works completed take the 911 into a more modern age.

The Porsche has seen a great amount of upgrades, fastidious work and money spent over its more recent life, especially since the current keeper took ownership some almost ~13 and a half years ago.

The 964 started its update process with a full engine rebuild, upgraded RS flywheel fitment, new steering pump belt and clutch arm kit. The whole process included a full clean through and paint work with a brake and clutch cylinder bleed.

Servicing was actioned in April 2019, a new Porsche stereo system was installed in October 2023 and new heater hoses and oil change was completed in November 2023.

The car left the country in October 1993 and was re-imported back in Dec 1995 - you can trace this change in the two HPi reports in the paperwork section. There are two HPi reports as the latest V5 shows a common mistake with the VIN number - the 11th digit shows a "5" on the V5 and "S" on the car. The 11th digit should have "S" which means Stugart. This is a common manual error on cars that are re-imported back. However, you can trace the history of the car using the two variants. Importantly Greg has checked with Porsche Silverstone and they've confirmed the car is a C16 (UK market) car and we've attached their report.

Please note, the personalised number plate is not included with the final sale and will be reverted back to its original 1992 K plate.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
