Introduction

Jon Dixon
Professional Consigner

A real gem, the front-engined 944 S2 offers outstanding handling, a punchy engine, and those now unmistakably retro good looks.

The 944 S2 was the most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production at the time, achieving a top speed of 150MPH, it was the most successful production car Porsche produced selling 163,000 units before the Boxster and 997 overtook. The car is fitted with a naturally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16v 3.0L engine, with a larger bore and revised transmission. However, this front-engined Porsche did not always get the respect it deserved, until recently. Now you see the prices rising in line with the rest of the classic Porsche lineup.

This example is coming out of 6 years ownership, finished in Glacier Blue Metallic with a blue leather interior and matching blue soft-top, the cabriolet versions of these cars have become very popular in recent years. Serviced last year ~100 miles ago, all the engine and ancillary belts replaced as part of this work, it's now ready for the new custodian to enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jon after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car is cracking to drive, I've really enjoyed using it on clear days with the roof down.

Chris is the proud owner of this lovely 944 S2, he's tried hard to keep the car all original during his ownership, using the car occasionally on the weekends on sunny days, covering ~1,000 miles in his ownership.

The car has a fantastic history with OPC servicing up to ~80,000 miles and then independent after that. We can tell that the history was a big draw for Chris, providing us with a spreadsheet documenting the cars service history. Feel free to ask Chris any questions about this 944 in the comments below and he will get back to your shortly.

Exterior

Classic retro good looks penned in the 80s, with the all-important pop-up headlights.

Wheels and Tyres

The S2 was fitted with Design 90 16-inch cast alloy wheels as standard, found in good condition on this car. The slightest signs of surface corrosion to the paint are beginning to appear, with the most noticeable wear on the rear nearside wheel.

The tyres are premium Continental ContraSport 2 and appear to have a good amount of tread left for the new custodian.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks really great, all the panel gaps and shut lines along with the doors, bonnet, and boot look good.

The soft top is in good order, finished in a Cobalt Blue, we captured it opening and closing as it should.

Paint

Finished in a metallic Glacier Blue, this colour really makes the 944 stand out from the classic Porsche lineup, the metallic paint keeping the car looking fresh.

The paintwork looks really good on this example, even in coverage and colour across each panel. Take a look at the photos and videos for an extensive review.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. No major cracks or chipping were observed.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Interior

A bold and electric Cobolt blue interior sets this 944 apart from the crowd.

Seats and Carpets

Vibrant Cobalt Blue leather seats look in great condition and are in line with the mileage and age of the car, the driver's seat exhibits some minor creases as you would expect. The colour looks great as they have recently been connolised in the original colour.

The carpets appear in line with the rest of the car, i.e. in great condition throughout, with a bit of fading to the boot carpets as most Porsche enthusiasts are accustomed to. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents in excellent condition and is in colour matching Cobalt Blue. The classic Porsche dials, controls, clock, and switches are in good condition, and all are said to be functional by the owner.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Just as you would expect, a classic 90s Porsche wheel greats you as you climb inside, the same wheel used on 911's of era too.

The gearstick looks in good condition with some minor signs of wear to the leather gaiter, in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

The most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production at the time, pushing out 208BHP from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

The 944 range was simplified when the S2 replaced both 8 and 16v engines in 1989. A new aluminium engine block reduced weight and expanded in size to 3.0L offering an additional 21bhp.

A matching numbers example, the engine bay is presented in great condition, lots of work carried out to keep it in the condition you see today, as mentioned a major belts service was actioned last year ~100 miles ago.

We captured a cold start, which can be seen in the mechanical video, the car starts first time without any fuss. Oil pressure shows at 5 bar when cold and driving, and Chris informs us it reads between 2.5 and 3 bar when up to temperature.

Suspension and Brakes

Chris reports the car drives very well, with the suspension offering a very firm and sporty drive, while the brakes system offering safe and prompt stopping power.

The Drive

Chris has been a little reserved when it comes to putting lots of miles on his pride and joy. When he does get the chance to take his 944 out he reports brilliant handling and a torquey response from the 3.0L.

Electrics and Other

The electrical aspects of the car are said to all be up to scratch and fully working, just two little snags; the aftermarket Parrot unit is installed but is not working and so a working Sony unit will come with the car, the central locking works fine but not when driving the car.

From factory, the car came equipped with headlamp washers, protective side mouldings. This car, a sign of the ownership, comes with the original tool kit, Porsche tyre inflator, mats and roof cover as pictured.

History and Paperwork

UK RHD 944 Cabriolets have increased in popularity recently, this smart example finished in Glacier Blue Metallic comes with a large history file of OPC servicing.

An extensive stack of service history comes with the car, a long list of main dealer and specialist work carried out represents helps to explain the condition of this 944 S2. It comes with the original toolkit too, and Porsche tyre inflator, as well as the roof cover for when the convertible roof is down. With a major belts service actioned last year, and just ~100 miles covered since then, it's ready for a new owner to enjoy this summer.

The car was originally purchased from the AFN Chelsea dealership and comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity which states the car is finished in a Glacier Blue Metallic with Cobalt Blue Hood and Leather Seats. From factory the car was also fitted with headlamp washers, protective side mouldings.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hello, I note the very short MoT, are you intending to put it through a test prior to the end of the auction.

Hi Tony,

That’s a good question. Yes, if it helps, I will organise an MOT this week and will confirm when done.
