Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Desirable final edition of the Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet.

First released in 1982, the Porsche 944 was based on the 924 but featured considerably more striking contours, as well as a redesigned front bumper with a lower spoiler and wider, more angular wings.

Porsche then introduced the S2 in 1989, bringing with it a 3.0L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that set a record as the largest four-cylinder engine of its time. With an increased power output of ~208 bhp, the S2 was quoted to be a 150 mph car when matched with the manual five-speed gearbox, as we have on this example, making it substantially quicker and more capable than previous iterations of the 944.

All of this, combined with the typically low Porsche driving position and driver-centric dashboard design, means that the Porsche 944 S2 offers a very engaging and interactive experience for the driver, and to top it off, you can even take the roof off, enhancing the driving experience further.

This 1992 944 S2 has been with the vendor from new, making you the second owner to cherish this convertible front-engined Porsche - it comes with a current MOT valid until 15.02.2027.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Gerry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The 944 has been a great car to own, which I have thoroughly enjoyed over the past 34 years.

Since owning the 944, Gerry has covered just over 75k miles in his 34 years of ownership. Used mainly as a second car, the 944 has been well maintained throughout its life, always garaged and having whatever it needed, as and when it was needed.

Over the past few years, the car has seen less use, which is why Gerry has decided to part with the 944 and let someone else enjoy the classic 944 S2 Cabriolet.

Gerry will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The wide arches of the 944, coupled with the S2 bumpers as fitted to the Turbo model, give the classic 944 a modern, clean look.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original Design-90 alloy wheels, these have some minor kerb marks picked up over the years, and the centre caps have lost their coating. That said, these could be easily refurbished by your local wheel specialist.

The tyres are Dunlop on the front and Yokohama on the rear, all of which have good tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork on the 944 looks in great shape, with no dings or dents spotted. The panels appear to align well, and there doesn’t look to be any areas of corrosion from what we could see. There has been some work carried out in the past by an independent specialist to tackle some minor corrosion which is noted in the paperwork.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Panthero Metallic', the paintwork has been touched up in a couple of places over Gerry's ownership. He told us this was purely for cosmetic reasons, to keep the 944 looking its best.

There are some minor scratches and the odd few chips, as you would expect. There are some swirl marks, some of which could easily be reduced with a machine polish and a full detail.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car and make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear to be in good condition, with just a few minor age-related marks in keeping with the age.

The fabric roof shows signs of age, and the plastic rear window has some discolouration. It does operate correctly, going down and up.

All the lights are in good condition, with no splits or cracks in the lenses. The headlights also pop up as they should, with no issues.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

As a later-model S4 944, the dashboard has a more modern feel, with the oval instrument binnacle.

Seats and Carpets

The original front seats are electric, and Gerry had these trimmed in leather several years ago. There are some light signs of wear on the piping of the driver's seat, but otherwise, they are in good order, as are the rear seats.

The door panels have some UV damage along the top, which has discoloured the vinyl, and it has split in a couple of places.

Throughout the cabin and into the boot, the carpets are clean and tidy, with no signs of excessive wear and tear. The spare wheel, jack and wheel brace are included.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard, for its age, is in very good condition, with no splits along the top, but there are a couple of minor marks on the lower section.

The instruments are working correctly, with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer shows ~75,473 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original four-spoke leather steering wheel, this has some signs of age-related use, and the stitching has split in a couple of places.

The gear knob is free of damage but shows signs of wear, as expected.

image

Mechanics

Back in its day, the 3.0-litre engine in the 944 was the most powerful four-cylinder engine produced.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.0-litre engine fires up without hesitation, as seen in our cold-start video, and runs well, with no issues reported by Gerry. The last service was carried out in February 2026, so not due for quite a while.

The 944 has a five-speed gearbox, with which the gears can be easily selected, and the car pulls strongly through all of them.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the ride is firm without being harsh, and there were no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car.

With disc brakes on each wheel, the 944 comes to a stop quickly in a straight line, with no juddering reported through the pedal.

image

The Drive

The Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a wonderfully balanced experience, a more modern-day classic Porsche with open-top luxury and sports-car precision. Its 3.0-litre naturally aspirated engine delivers smooth, linear power, while the near-perfect weight distribution gives the car confident handling and impressive stability through corners.

It's a great all-rounder that doesn’t disappoint.

image

Electrics and Other

Inside the 944, all the switchgear appears to be in good condition, with no signs of excessive wear on the buttons, apart from the roof button (another indication that the car was mainly used with the roof down and the sun out).

The original radio cassette player is also in place.

Gerry told us everything was in working order.

image

History and Paperwork

With just one keeper from new, Gerry has kept a tidy history file for the 944 S2 Cabriolet.

There are several invoices in the history file for the 944, dating back several years, which suggest the car has been well maintained and regularly serviced by either main dealers or independent Porsche specialists.

There is also the original service book, which has a nice number of stamps, and to top off the history, Gerry’s local Porsche specialist, Chris at OCD Porsche, whom he has used for several years, has vouched for the car being well maintained and well kept and has even offered to give a reference, or take enquiries on the car.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to take ownership of an honest, genuine one-owner car that has been garaged and well-maintained for the past 34 years.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, and also carried out a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage-history check.

We've summarised our own view of the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time reviewing everything in this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time. We just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, please first ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bid(s), as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
