Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The 993 was the last incarnation of the air-cooled cars and is often described as the last true Porsche 911.

The 911 has captivated drivers for over 50 years as a true sports car with its ability to deliver peak performance in any driving situation. The 993 was much improved over its predecessor where, according to Porsche, only 20% of its parts were carried over from the previous generation. With wider and less rounded front wings, flatter headlamps and broader rear wings that blended into the tail in a more direct line, the 993 brought the biggest alteration in the 911’s shape since the original was introduced. Packing a naturally aspirated 3.6L flat-six into its shapely form, the 993 develops around ~272BHP and a 0-60 time of ~5.4 seconds delivering its impressive performance via the slick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox.

Coming from a ~16 year ownership and covering less than ~4,000 miles in that time. The current enthusiast owner has maintained the car with a friend over their ownership, and the car presents in good condition given the age and miles covered over its life. The 993 comes with an advisory free MOT valid until 30.05.24. View the full listing to see the details.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'd always been a Porsche fan for as long as I can remember and when the 993 came up for sale, I couldn't say no to owning one.

The current owner has had the car for just over ~16 years, and has truly loved and admired the Carrera over his ownership. "It was a dream come true for me owning this car, I've been a fan of the shape of these cars for many years and just knew I had to have one" he tells us.

The time has come for Brian to sell the car to a new owner, "I covered very few miles in the Porsche since I've owned it and don't get to enjoy it now as much as I used to, a new owner would be able to get the full potential from the 993 but I'll be sorry to see it go". In his ownership, he has serviced the car with a mechanic friend, telling us the car has had oil changes in line with usage. If you have any questions about the car, Brian will be happy to answer them in the comments section below.

Exterior

With unmistakable elegance, characterising the 911 since the 1960's, this is an iconic sports car ready for all seasons.

Wheels and Tyres

Porsche 911 Turbo hollow spoke 17" wheels show in a presentable way around the car, with a few age related marks and the centre cap sections could do with being replaced with some showing age.

Tyres on the Carrera are Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's 205/50 with a date code of 2004 to the front, and Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's 225/40 dated from 2007 to the rear. Tyres show with a respectable amount of tread but would benefit from a new set to ensure full safety for the future. Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Porsche.

Bodywork

The Porsche stands well and looked straight and clean along the shut lines. We didn't see any major issues looking over the panels, this looks to be a rust free example which you don't often see given the age, one thing to note was a small dent to the top of the boot.

When Brian purchased the car, it had had a new convertible roof fitted, and presents in excellent condition as a result, he can't remember ever taking the car out in the wet.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork in "Iris Blue Metallic" on the car looks to be largely original is a really lovely colour for this era. We noted a few minor marks on the paintwork with a slight blemish on the bonnet and on the nearside section above the headlight in the form of light scratches. The car looked lovely walking around the exterior on our visit, but may benefit from some detailing at a later stage to bring out the shine on the metallic colour.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The front windscreen was replaced in 2007 by Autoglass and still showed in great condition. We didn't note any issues with corrosion around the windscreen section which can be a common sight in older Porsche's. Side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition also and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. Towards the rear, the lights had gone a little cloudy which may benefit from some restoration work by the future owner.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a lovely looking car the Carrera really is.

Interior

No fuss or gimmicks, the Carrera is driver focused Porsche, exactly how a 911 should be.

Seats and Carpets

Electric leather seats make for a really comfortable ride inside the 911, the bolster sections on the drivers seat do show with a little wear/age related cracking. In the rear of the car, the passenger seats showed with very little wear suggesting little use of this section over the cars history.

Door cards and trim all looked good in the cabin area. Carpet sections also showed well and without major concern which reflected in the condition of the headlining also. Looking in closer detail around the outside of the roof, we did note a small blemish to the fabric on the nearside edge.

Dashboard

The dashboard area on the Porsche was clean and presentable showing without cracking or warping. The clocks and dials showed nicely with ~86,229 miles recorded at the time of our visit.

Overall, the dash setup is straightforward with little clutter, designed to keep the interior minimal in its presentation. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic leather trimmed Porsche steering wheel does show a fair amount of wear to it but remains functional. The airbag was tested here after 4 years of ownership by Porsche of Lancaster in March 1999.

Much like the steering wheel, the gear shifter also shows with a fair amount of wear and may benefit from some reconditioning work from the future owner to bring this back up to a great standard. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The 993 delivers ~272BHP and a 0-60 time of ~5.4 seconds, with a 6-speed manual gearbox and its naturally aspirated flat-six, this model is a drivers dream.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.6L engine fired up without concern when we visited the Porsche. The 6-speed manual gearbox was a new feature for the 993, this example a C2, all the power is delivered to the rear wheels.

Head over to the 'Mechanical Review' video for an overview of the engine, here you can see the car start up from cold which turns over and idles without issue, and operating without issue on the drive.

Suspension and Brakes

The 993 saw improved handling over its pre-decessors thanks to multi-link rear suspension setup attached to the alloy subframe. We noted no untoward noises or knocks from the suspension when we were on then road in the car with an enjoyable journey on our test drive.

Braking in the 993 is improved vs previous models thanks to ABS assisted cross drilled and vented disks. Please view the mechanical review video and photographs to see close-up and underside images from around the Carrera.

The Drive

The car feels tight and pulls well in each gear with the Porsche soundtrack sounding sublime. The clutch in the car felt great and presented no issues for us when out on the road.

A pleasant and smooth drive with classic Porsche handling that had no sign of rattling, bangs or unwanted noises. Starting up from cold, the engine idled nicely and sounded great standing still and even better out on the road.

Electrics and Other

The Porsche has some lovely features including an electric soft top, which we demonstrate working well in our mechanical review video, wind deflector, immobiliser alarm, electric windows and seats, power steering and luggage compartment velour carpet are also included.

The Porsche has an aftermarket Kenwood stereo system added to the dash area. Also noted as part of the electronics was the functional electronic spoiler which had no issues in its operation. Although we were unable to test all of the electrical elements in the car, Brian reports that these are fully functional with no issues reported. You may note looking over the review videos and gallery sections, that the boot and bonnet were unable to support themselves in propping open, this would require strut support replacements to bring these back to their original state.

History and Paperwork

With a ~15 year current ownership and less than ~4,000 miles in that time, this rear wheel drive 6 speed manual 911 has all the right ingredients.

Much of the mechanical work work has been carried out by the current owner and a local mechanic and has benefitted from regular oil changes over its history as well as being dry stored for the majority of the last ~16 year ownership. Ultimately, the Carrera is an honest car that has been well loved and looked after across its life, but would benefit from some additional detailing to give it an extra edge in its future ownership. The 993 comes with an advisory free MOT valid until 30.05.24.

The last servicing was carried out at ~79,000 miles in June 2007 by a Porsche specialist, covering off a full pre-purchase inspection before the current owner purchased the car. In 2006 the Porsche had its rear discs, pads, sensors and shims replaced, nearside lower cam cover and gasket replaced and an oil change costing over £1400 at 72,843 miles covered. March 2004 had a major service at 54,402 miles covering oil change and rear disc skim for the Carrera costing over £800.

Servicing in January 2002 covered off a 41,462 mile interim service with a replacement bonnet release, full wheel alignment, oil change and new front rod track dampers with a cost over £1205. In March 1999 the Carrera was serviced at 29,500 miles, September 1997 saw the Carrera go through its 24,000 mile check up and a £1100 service.
