The ultimate version of the air-cooled 911 dynasty arrived in 1993, but despite its familiar power plant, it was a new car from the ground up. For many purists, the 993 is the one to have, combining the original ethics of the 911 dart-like playfulness, with the added confidence of its reassuring multi-link rear suspension.

Serving as a fine entry point to those who often wondered what all the fuss is about, the Carrera, which retains the classic RWD layout is enhanced by its modernised detailing, giving the coupe a much more contemporary appearance. A refined yet genuinely sporting driving experience, the 993 flew the flag almost single-handedly for Porsche before the generation of water-cooled Porsches took on the baton.

Exterior

Arguably one of the best-looking 'modern' 911s created, courtesy of its iconic shape topped off with the red reflector strip - a timeless look.

Wheels and Tyres

18” twist alloys are in very good condition with just some light age related marks in keeping with the age of the 993. Matching Michelin tyres are fitted and have a good number of miles left on them.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the 993 presents really well - the door shuts align as you would expect, along with the bonnet and engine cover.

Some extensive restoration was carried out to the underside of the 993, where the car was stripped back, and new stone guarding was applied to future-proof it - pictures in the gallery below.

In terms of corrosion, the car looks really good and it's great to see the images of the extensive underside work actioned a few years ago that should give you confidence in the car. Looking around the outside of the car you'll see light signs of bubbling on the skuttle and lower part of the passenger wing. The new owner may want to factor that bodyshop repair into the purchase - the good news is the reserve is very keen on this car giving you the potential of immediate equity allowing you to spend on any jobs you feel necessary.

Paint

Finished in Polar Silver, the Porsche is in excellent shape; there is an odd age-related mark and stone chip here and there, as you would expect. In addition, the car received some paint in 2014 on the wings and quarters, which is detailed in the paperwork section. However, there is some blistering to the top and bottom of the passenger side wing and across the scuttle panel on both corners.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no noticeable scratches spotted. The window seals look to be in good condition and the electric windows and sunroof operate correctly.

The headlights are in good condition too with no apparent chips to the clear lenses; the distinctive red reflector strip at the back end is bright and clear with no damage.

Interior

Simple but effective - the 993 cabin has everything you need without being distracted by modern-day electronics.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is finished in grey leather, and there is some typical age-related wear to the bolsters that look to be in keeping with the age and mileage of the car.

The carpets are in good condition; there is some wear to the driver’s heal pad, and the mat has a small hole, which could easily be replaced. Inside the trunk is clean and tidy with no areas for concern.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no splits or cracks to be seen. The instruments are finished with silver bezels and look in good condition, with the odometer showing ~107,036 miles and reported to be working as they should. The odometer has been rebuilt and is believed to be approximately ~6,000 miles less than it reads.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has some light shining to the rim, in keeping with the mileage. The gearknob is in good condition, with no apparent marks to mention.

Mechanics

Air-cooled 3.6 litre flat-six - considered by many to be the ultimate engine produced by Porsche.

Engine and Gearbox

The flat-six fires up straight away with no untoward noises or smoke, as seen in our mechanical review. The paperwork makes for good reading when it comes to seeing how well the car has been maintained.

Fitted with a six-speed gearbox, the change is precise and smooth, and the car pulls strongly through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Being the Carrera 4, the four-wheel drive gives a sense of security around the twisty bits; there are no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car, and it’s great fun to be in.

Fitted with drilled discs adds to the efficiency of the braking, ensuring it comes to a stop when needed. Nigel reports the car to come to a halt with no issues and in a straight line.

The Drive

There's something about an air-cooled 911. It sounds great, looks great, and never fails to turn heads; the flat-six sound is intoxicating.

At 26 years old, it may not have the modern touches of a newer 911, but do you really need them? The Carrera 4 is more than capable of putting that smile on your face as you blast down your local B-roads.

Electrics and Other

The car's age means there isn’t much in the way of creature comforts. It has electric windows and sunroof; as we mentioned earlier. The switchgear has some light age-related wear but is reported by Nigel to be working correctly.

An excellent addition is a period-looking head unit which is also Bluetooth and can be used to stream music and make hands-free calls.

The rear spoiler and sunroof operate correctly.

History and Paperwork

With 22 service stamps gracing the service book, it would suggest that the Porsche 993 has been well cared for.

When it comes to buying any classic car, history is undoubtedly an essential part of the buying process. Feb 2007…minor bump…see image 85/86 SL Restoration.
Mar 2008… Bumper repair following badger strike.
See image 90/91 Sl Restoration.
Sept 2014 Tiny ding on bumper repaired by B and G repairs.
I am not aware of any accident damage prior to purchasing the car in 1996.

I notice there’s a not insignificant area of rust bubbling through the paintwork on the front passenger side wheel arch (bottom RHD side). Have you had this looked at and how extensive is its spread?
