Introduction

Dom Ginn
Photographer

The Boxster defines Porsche’s unmistakable appeal, an opportunity for more to enjoy the marque and now arguably a 90’s icon.

The 1996 launch of the Porsche Boxster was hailed as a return to Porsche's values of agility and lightness. In order to capitalise on Porsche's excellent reputation as the world's top sports car manufacturer, the 986 generation Boxster also offered an element of affordability, practicality with peerless build quality. The Boxster was also responsible for the very survival of the company. With the 911 ably managing sales in the supercar sector, Porsche devised the Boxster for the everyman and it shared much of the same architecture as its bigger sister. By the time production ended in 2004, almost ~165,000 examples had been built, becoming the best-selling car Porsche had ever made. The mid-engined flat-six layout is housed within a balanced chassis, offering tremendous grip, a compliant ride and communicative steering. This attribute gave it a distinct advantage over the new wave of 90’s open-top roadsters.

This beautifully presented 1997 Boxster with a manual gearbox comes to market after ~5 years with our vendor, finished in "Ocean Blue Metallic" with a grey leather interior. It has an excellent service history with an impressive folder of invoices since 1999. It has just seen 2 previous keepers and shows all the evidence of being well maintained, which includes an engine replacement early in its life in 2002. It comes with 2 keys, a full owner's wallet and booklets. Sold with an MOT to April 2026 and has 15 service stamps.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Bought in 2020, the Boxster is registered and mainly used by Susan. Having previously used it regularly, they have made the most of its practicality and ease of driving.

A recent lack of use is the main reason why the car is being sold. Paul will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Cleanly presented in a sophisticated blue colourway with 911-style alloys, the car maintains a growing and timeless appeal.

Wheels and Tyres

It comes with a set of 18” Sport Classic II split-rim wheels. All are in good shape, with mild signs of age as pictured.

Fitted with Kumho tyres, the rears date from 2023, and the front pair are over 15 years old. All look to display legal tread, and the car has had a recent MOT.

image

Bodywork

The exterior is neatly presented with no discernible panel damage. The panels are flush to the body with positive shut lines. All of the doors open and close with ease. The underside looks solid, with just some small signs of age to some surfaces.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Ocean Blue Metallic" paint is consistent in finish and has an even coverage and a positive lustre. There are a few mild marks across the body, the main ones being a handful of mild blemishes on the front wings and bonnet and the top of the hood lid shows a mild under-paint imperfection.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The base of the windscreen has some lamination damage, the rest of the glass and seals are in good shape. The original headlamps are clear, with a minor crack noted on the nearside front indicator. The rear lenses are in good condition.

The trim is in good condition and well-mounted. The rear Boxster badge has a little damage as pictured, and the front vents show mild wear. The bumpers are flush with the body and are free from significant marks.

image

Interior

A clean cabin just needs a little cosmetic attention to the seats to make it perfect we think!

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather heated seats show wear in line with the mileage, it's mainly focused on the bolsters. The carpets and mats are in good shape with no signs of water ingress. Both luggage areas are tidy with no signs of heavy use.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is smartly presented, with a few marks noted on the facia and centre console. The switches and dials are in good shape. All are said to work. The door cards, interior trim and headlining are clean.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looks tidy with mild signs of age. There is wear on the gearstick and handbrake in keeping with the mileage and use of this roadster.

image

Mechanics

The mid-engine layout provided a near-perfect weight distribution to aid its balanced handling.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine runs evenly with no dashboard warning lights flagged up at any point. Aside from the expected condensation on start, there were no unwanted exhaust fumes. The engine was replaced by Porsche at 35,891 miles in 2002.

The gearbox operates without fault, shifting through the gears with no reported problems. Watch the video to see and hear the car on the road.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension deals with the road surfaces with no unwanted noises, it's firm but there were no knocks. The brakes work positively in action and are said to be free of sponginess.

image

The Drive

The appeal of the Boxster becomes evident by its civil driving mannerisms, with plenty of verve when the conditions allow. Docile in town with well-weighted controls, the Boxster is easy to live with yet its mid-engine configuration and Porsche DNA translate to a more meaningful experience when you hit the open roads.

The engine is smooth and pulls well. The test drive was around the suburbs, which demonstrated its ability to deal with traffic and congestion without problems. The power steering has a good feel, with no reports of wobbles or pulling.

image

Electrics and Other

The hood is in good shape, with no significant marks or outdoor elements. It raises and lowers with no reported issues. It has seen a substantial amount of maintenance in recent years to ensure its operation is fault-free.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~5 year ownership, just 2 former keepers, a replacement engine early in its life, this nicely spec'd manual example of the Boxster presents in condition that belies the miles.

Registered in November 1997, this Boxster has 15 service stamps and comes with an impressive number of maintenance invoices, most of which are from main Porsche dealer and Porsche specialists. Recent work includes a new key head, exhaust clamp and almost £1,500 worth of roof attention. The service book has a stamp to indicate that the engine was replaced by Porsche Lancaster in October 2002.

Older invoices cover servicing, braking, a new catalytic converter, a new radiator, and various sundry and cosmetic items. It was last serviced at 84,883 miles and has an MOT to April 2026. It comes with its owner's wallet with a full set of booklets and two sets of keys.

Hi Paul,

Thanks again for the opportunity to view the Boxster.

Looking back over the MOT history from the past four years, I noticed that the exhaust and all four shock absorbers had previously been flagged as approaching the point of needing replacement. I haven’t come across any invoices confirming that this work has been carried out—apologies if I’ve missed something.

That said, I noticed the most recent MOT has no advisory comments, which might suggest the work has already been completed. Could you kindly clarify whether the exhaust and shock absorbers have indeed been replaced?

Many thanks,

Stuart
