Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

That distinctive howl from the flat-six behind you never fails to remind you that you're in a 911.

Rewriting the 911 playbook would never be easy, and the inauspicious verdicts on its styling didn’t bode well when it was first released in 1997. However, it has aged rather like a fine wine and time has balanced the opinions, resulting in the 996 series proving to be a great introduction to the world of the 911.

Putting aside the purists' opinions, there was no way for Porsche to update the 911 except to use water-cooling. What it did was to open the brand to a new market, without the loss of the car's charismatic driving style and exceptional quality engineering. It helped Porsche survive the 1990s, and the company emerged as a leaner and more progressive company with a healthy vision for the future.

Finished in a stunning Metallic Ocean Blue colourway, this well-maintained 1998 Carrera Convertible comes with a factory hardtop and has retained much of its original specification. It has been subject to a lot of work over the last ~7 years, which includes regular servicing, RMS repair, steering, suspension and cosmetics. It comes with an MOT valid until November 2023, two keys and its original owner's wallet and booklets.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A very satisfying car to own and drive, it deals with modern conditions well.

Andrew, the owner, has used it as an occasional car and it regularly gets the opportunity to stretch its legs up on the motorway.

The car has been kept in a private underground garage during Andrew's ~7 years of ownership.

As a fan of driving, Andrew has enjoyed his time with the car and spent a considerable amount of time and money getting the car to drive as it should and a lack of use is the main reason for its sale.

Andrew will be happy to answer any questions int he comments section below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

It's disarmingly handsome in its Metallic Ocean Blue finish and now with pre-facelift cars being recognised as the purist form of the 996 - maybe now is the right time to buy one.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” ‘Technology’ Turbo-look alloy wheels are in excellent condition and are complemented by a full set of Continental tyres all of which are under three years old and display plenty of tread.

Bodywork

Visually the floor pan and chassis appear to be solid, with just a light sheen of age noted on some of the underside. The wheel wells are good, with no discernible corrosion spotted on the body. The panel work looks flush with even shut lines. There is an odd minor dent noted but otherwise the exterior metalwork is neatly presented.

All of the doors open and close with ease, with the glass drop/lift appearing to function. The boot and bonnet struts are very effective having been replaced in 2020. The door seals are all good and intact.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Metallic Ocean Blue paint is well applied, with a decent lustre. There are a handful of light marks but in line with the age and mileage of the car.

A few minor chips/scuffs were noted on the bonnet, front bumper and lower valance.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is intact, with no significant damage other than a little fogging noted on the bottom lower corner. The rest of the glass and seals are in decent shape. The trim is intact with no outstanding flaws, just the lower front intake showing minor paint wear.

The headlamps are in good condition, having been subject to a professional refurb in 2022 along with the installation of LED lighting.

Interior

Sensible ergonomics and the classic five-dial dashboard, originality is the key to this one.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats show age-related creases with the driver's side revealing a couple of fractures. The rear and passenger seats show patches of discolouration. They retain their firmness and Andrew confirms the electric controls work.

The carpets are in decent shape, all bone-dry.

The luggage storage area carpeting is also free of water ingress with nothing more than a little cleaning needed.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented with minor pockmarks noted, but overall the plastics and leather have lasted well.

The switchgear is in good shape and Andrew confirms all of the functions, including its air conditioning work as expected.

The centre console is intact although the storage lid will need attention.

The front door cards are good and free of significant scuffs, but the rear items show a little more wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3-spoke steering wheel is presentable with a few minor marks, and the gear lever does show wear but its gaiter is intact.

Mechanics

The chassis and suspension felt pretty taut; this car has been well looked after.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start was encouraging, with the engine firing up immediately with no slow cranking. The warning lights remained off as the engine idled evenly. No significant smoke was noted from the stainless steel exhaust, other than the expected condensation. The car was leak-free during the visit, and no unwanted noises were heard from the engine on tick-over.

The engine is very cleanly presented.

The gearbox was demonstrated to operate without any issues, and the gear changes and clutch all operated without any negative reports.

The RMS was replaced as part of a clutch overhaul in 2020.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension dealt with the low-speed test drives over the London roads with no outstanding problems, soaking up the ruts and imperfections well. It has seen recent work, with new front guide arms in 2021 as well as work over the last three years on its steering.

The brakes appeared to be in good shape and were very effective, stopping the car with no drama or pulling at the steering wheel.

The Drive

A mechanically competent car you wouldn't believe it's 25 years old, such is the build quality and robust engineering. The 911’s transition from air to water cooling, also brought in a sweep of welcome changes including a far more superior ergonomically designed cabin. But the drive is the key thing about the narrow-bodied 996 models.

In its normally aspirated form, the nimble handling and mechanical feel to the steering and passive rear axle are purebred 911. Its ability as a daily driver was very evident by the test drive, but we were treated to a glimpse of its straight-line speed and cornering ability. Andrew applied the power smoothly, with no ill effects or unwanted noises from the wheels.

There was a little cabin creak, but nothing in terms of mechanical rattles.

Electrics and Other

The car’s soft top is intact with a few minor age-related marks on the canvas. The rear screen is intact with no significant flaws. The soft top operation is seamless with no strain on the motor and is a good fit.

The hardtop is in good condition too with no outstanding issues. It was easily placed on the car and provided a snug fit.

Both of the roof's interior headlinings are intact.

History and Paperwork

Over the ~7 years in the hands of the current owner Andrew, the 911 has received all the work it has needed done.

Originally supplied by Lindbrook Porsche in Kent in December 1998, it comes with a reassuring number of services, with 8 Porsche main dealer stamps up to 78,415 miles and another 10 more from Porsche specialists thereafter. In the ~7 years of ownership in the hands of Andrew, he has spent a lot of money on it. This includes paintwork, suspension, steering, a new lambda sensor, brake and RMS work. It was last serviced in November 2022, fewer than 400 miles ago.

It comes with a complete owner's wallet and booklets, its under bonnet build data sticker intact, 2 keys and has an MOT to November 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
