Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The legendary 996 - with its restyled sleek bodywork, a 3.4L water-cooled engine, and roomier interior - there's a lot to like about this Carrera that's morphing nicely in to classic status.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche 996 Carrera was designed as a sports grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver.

The 996 presented a milestone for the German carmaker with a redesign developed by Pinky Lai (also responsible for the designs of both the 987 Boxter and Cayman), lines were smoothed, windscreen pushed back, it also offered a level of comfort that both upon its release and now makes it so appealing to many.

This example has been in Tony's careful hands for the past 14 years, he really enjoyed his 911 ownership and kept the car highly original over his ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always loved Porsche's and their iconic yet luxury driver-focused cars - this 911 Carrera has served me well for the last 14 years.

Tony has always been a big Porsche fan and has thoroughly enjoyed the past 14 years with this 996.1 Carrera. When the opportunity to purchase a 911 arose, Tony jumped at the chance. Following the reviews of having bulletproof reliability, Tony mentions it was a no-brainer.

Due to ill health Tony is unfortunately no longer able to use the car like he once had and has decided to part with it. The car is highly original and always had it attended to by independent specialists when work has been required.

Tony will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Featuring its iconic 911 silhouette, instantly recognisable around the world for all the right reasons.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with its original 18" 993 Turbo Technology hollow spoke wheels (an optional upgrade), all of which appear in good condition, with just the slightest of curbs marks. The front wheel center caps are present, however, the rear ones are missing their Porsche badges.

The tyres are premium Pirelli P Zero Rosso's and have a lot of tread left in them, however, they're beginning to show slight signs of cracking between the outside wall and tread.

You'll find a space-saver spare tyre in the boot, along with the tool kit - take a look at the photos and videos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the car appears very straight and in good condition throughout. All the panel gaps look correct and tight when photographing the car. The only imperfections we noticed were stone chipping to the front bonnet and bumper and very minor bubbling on the top of the doors along with a few parking marks on the driver's door.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the iconic Artic Silver paintwork, the Carrera looks great on the roads. It would benefit from a little TLC, a deep polish and mop to really bring the car out to another level.

Combined with the black leather interior, the car is timeless.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition all around, the seals look tight and we couldn't see any perishing.

Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

A new model calls for an uplifted interior - the 996 cabin is a step up in terms of luxury, especially when wrapped in black leather throughout.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather sports seats are fitted within the cabin and both appear in good condition and look to be in line with the age and mileage. There is some slight wear to the drivers bolster, as you might expect, but no major damage to note. The door cards and carpet also appear in great condition throughout.

The back of the seats are showing some wear due to carrying items in the back.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a more detailed view.

Dashboard

A crisp and clean layout from years of racing experience.

The black dials match the colour scheme of the interior and all the white digits are clear and very legible. Tony reports all the dials, gauges and airconditioning are fully working to his knowledge.

Please take a look at the images and videos to see the dashboard up close.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are original items that look and feel in good condition with some light wear to both.

A quick and simple fix would be to recover the steering wheel. Royal Steering Wheels in Aylesbury are highly recommended and would only cost a few hundred pounds - well worth it we think.

Take a look at the detailed video and photographic tours on the interior.

Mechanics

A new era - the 3.4L water-cooled Carrera offers a mighty 300bhp to tap into.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4L Porsche block is a masterpiece of an engine and when mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox it really comes alive.

Tony reports the engine runs very well, with just a very minor exhaust leak.

Another 'Sunday job' would be to action a fresh detail on the engine bay.

As you can see from the cold start video, the Carrera fires up at the first turn of the key and sounds great, we took the car for a drive around the block which shows the car swiftly working its way up and down the gearbox with fault.

Suspension and Brakes

The 996 took the already highly praised 993 front suspension, 6-speed transmission, and rear multi-link suspension and fitted it in a revised form. The car was 45% stiffer than its predecessor after it was formed from high-strength steel.

Tony reports no unusual knocks or noises coming from this 996, and also reports good handling along with prompt stopping power from the breaks.

The Drive

The sports car that sets the bar for all others, the 911 is a high-performance race car, legal for the UK roads.

The 911 gives a great amount of feedback, giving you all the confidence to tackle any corner you chuck it into, while not disappointing on the straights either.

Being a highly original first-gen, we think it's a great usable classic with good investment potential.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with an Alpine head unit along with a 6-CD player in the boot, the 911 is fully equipped to give you a comfortable and enjoyable ride wherever you decide to venture.

Everything works as it should do to Tony's knowledge.

History and Paperwork

14 years of previous ownership and a good wedge of service history, this early 911 Carrera is a great entry into the 911 club.

There is a really good level of paperwork and history with this example - MOT documentation as well as a well-stamped service book - take a look at all the receipts in the media pack below.

Optional extras fitted at factory:
014 - Sports Package
030 - Sports suspension -10mm lower
220 - LSD Limited Slip Differential
222 - Traction control ASR
224 - Traction control ABD
375 - 2-way electrical sports seat, left
376 - 2-way electrical sports seat, right
408 - 18" 993 Turbo Technology hollow spoke wheels
650 - Sun-moon-roof

To make the most of this car we think it would benefit from a good detail, fresh service, fix the exhaust leak and review the tyres. Taking this into account, the car has a lower than usual guide price that should leave the owner with room to improve.

The car is currently being stored with Porsche Tech near Coventry.

Tony will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Tony, can you give any further info on the service history please? How many oil changes has it had since the one in 2008? The table in the description suggests it’s had 1 service since then.

Tony

It’s just had a oil and filter change and that needs to be put in the service book and photo of the service shows the service stamps
