Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

The first generation of water-cooled 911's, the Millennium Edition was a limited run Carrera 4 built to celebrate Y2K.

The Type 996 came to market in 1997, a significant change to the 911, yet still the well known flat six rear engined sports car formula. The platform however was a massive change. The engine might still have been a flat six, but gone was the noisy air-cooled unit which had reached the end of its development, a new more efficient unit wrapped in a water jacket was developed to meet the increasingly stringent regulations. The suspension was also overhauled, bigger and stronger across the platform, and most most notably a brand new design that still had that iconic 911 silhouette.

The Millennium Edition was a run of 911, 911 Carrera 4 Coupe's, all finished in a beautiful colour of "Violet chromaflair" with tan interior and manual gearboxes. These cars were narrow body examples, and this one coming to sale has covered ~85,850 miles and is one of only a handful that made it to the UK market. It's coming to sale out of 9 years of careful ownership, just ~3,000 miles added in that time, and the car has had a replacement engine fitted by Porsche in 2006, just ~20,000 miles ago.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Tom after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had never driven a Porsche before and bearing in mind their reputation as probably the best everyday supercar, I was not disappointed.

Exterior

The design on the 996 was somewhat controversial when launched, now though, it's a design that is arguably maturing with age.

Wheels and Tyres

From factory the Millennium Edition was fitted with Turbo Twist alloys in chrome, quite the statement. This example had those wheels swapped out by a previous owner in 2008 for these 18" examples.

They present in very good condition all around, finished in a standard silver rather than chrome, and the tyres were replaced 2 years ago with minimal mileage since.

Bodywork

All of the Millennium Edition cars were coupe's, narrow body in design, it's that classic 911 shape.

On our consignment visit, the bodywork presented in excellent condition. Panel gaps and shut lines look great, we didn't spot any corrosion of note and the car looks to be free from big parking dents etc. Take a look through the photo and video review to see the detail.

Paint

Violet chromaflair, a custom colour chosen by Porsche for this limited run car. The colour of this car is hard to describe, changing with the light that hits it, it ranges from a hues of green to an almost aubergine and brown colour. The finish and coverage on the car is even from what we observed. With the age of the car, it has the usual swirl marks in bright sunlight, a mop and polish should elevate the finish.

Glass and Trim

All the glass and trim look in very good condition on this example. Particularly the "fried egg" headlight lenses, they look crisp and clear, rather than clouding over like you often see on these early cars.

Interior

Full leather tan interior with flourishes of wood veneer trim, still that classic 911 instrument cluster for the driver.

Seats and Carpets

Full leather sports seats finished in a tan coloured leather, with electrically adjustable seats. They are in very good condition considering the mileage and age of the car, just some patina on them rather than any significant wear.

View the images and video for a detailed view.

Dashboard

White backed dials and wrapped in the same tan coloured leather, the dashboard presents in very good condition too, this is clearly a car that has been cherished.

The all important Millennium Edition badging is present on the centre console, showing that this example is number 422 of 911 made.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather and wood veneer theme continues with the steering wheel and gear stick. Presenting in very good condition with the wear in line with mileage and age.

Mechanics

This 996 was built on an all new platform, but still unmistakeable as a 911; flat six, rear engined, manual gearbox and mechanical steering.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the new 911 water-cooled engine, the Millennium Edition was fitted with the 3.4L block with 4 valves per cylinder that were naturally aspirated.

The 996 generation of cars, bar the racier Turbo and GT variants, were known to suffer IMS bearing failure and so remedial action on this is a must when you're looking to purchase one. This particular example had an engine replacement from Porsche in 2006, with the car covering some ~20,000 since. Watch the video review to see the car fire up in to life on a hot day.

Suspension and Brakes

Along with the engine, the suspension on the 996 was a significant upgrade from the 993. John reports that this example has had some recent suspension mount work actioned.

The Drive

The 996 still has that classic 911 driving experience; the engine hanging out the back, a manual gearbox, mechanical steering. In the coupe form like this, it's a sports car you can easily cross continents with.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with the factory Porsche entertainment system, and electrically adjustable seats, John reports that everything is working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Number 422 of just 911 made, this Millennium Edition is one of only a handful that made it to the UK, this was importantly having had a replacement engine from Porsche.

Built to celebrate the turn of the millennium, the Millennium Edition was a limited edition run of 911 911's, this one was number 422. They were all Carrera 4 manual coupe examples, with their unique colourway of "Violet chromaflair" over tan interior. This example is a UK RHD car, coming out of 9 years ownership, and presents in excellent condition.
