Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Featuring a brand new design for 1999, the 996 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet retained the iconic 911 silhouette, whilst integrating the brand new water cooled 3.4L flat six engine.

The Porsche 911 is, for most, the "iconic" Porsche. Instantly recognisable and synonymous with the Porsche brand, it was nothing if not surprising when Stuttgart announced two major overhauls for the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 in 1998. The Cabriolet owners would not be left lusting after its fixed roof sibling due to shortfalls in performance, ensuring the chassis was stiffer than previous convertibles and offered similar if not equal handling to the Coupé.

This 996 cabriolet comes to market from Simon, the owner for the last three years - it comes with some good history that shows a big bill that's over £2.3k for the IMS bearing and new clutch that was fitted during his ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love everything about this car, from the silver and red colour combination to the noise the engine makes, every journey in this car leaves me with a smile on my face.

Simon has owned this car since 2019 and has enjoyed three years of joyful ownership. During his time with the car he has gone out of his way to maintain it and has had some major jobs done such as renewing the intermediate shaft (IMS), fitting a new clutch, new water pump and thermostat, new air condensers, and even fitting a stainless steel sports exhaust and induction kit to add to the sound of the already throaty 3.4L engine.

It’s safe to say that Simon has gone to great lengths to look after this car, this is evident in the paperwork supplied with the vehicle. When we spoke with Simon he had nothing but praise for the Carrera, saying that he has never driven anything so engaging before, with every journey putting a smile on his face.

Simon is now putting the car up for sale as he simply doesn’t have the time to drive it anymore and with a house move in the works it would be a shame to see it unused. If you have any questions, Simon will be happy to answer these in the comments below.

Exterior

The 996 introduced the first major redesign in the 911s recent history, taking styling cues from the popular Boxster, the design work involved in the creation of the 996 won international design awards.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in visibly good condition for their age, the split rim design having aged well. The combination of dark grey spokes and silver rims add contrast to the car's appearance. On the day of our visit we noticed no visible signs of curb damage or corrosion, however there are many high resolution images available for you to assess the condition of the wheels for yourself.

The tyres again seem to be in good condition, with no cracks or lumps in the sidewalls, and visible depth to the tread. The tyres are a matching set of Continental Sportcontact 2’s all round, images are available in the gallery for you to see tyre condition and tread wear.

Bodywork

On the whole the bodywork is in good condition, with all panels appearing to be straight and true, and no major panel gaps that we could notice.

You'll notice a slight extra gap where the front bumper meets the headlights / bonnet and this could be due to the upgraded work that was carried out in the past to change the front to the later facelift look - you see the car's original VIN sticker under the bonnet - please assess the images and videos to make up your own minds.

The hard top roof fits the car well and it comes off and goes back on without any hassle. The soft-top operation also works as expected, in the video you will see it going down and up, with the windows operating as expected too.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The silver paintwork presents well for its 23 year age, with no major scratches or scuffs to report and all panels are a matching colour and tone. There are some stone chips on the front end, most of which are relatively minor, however there is one stone chip on the lower nearside edge of the front bumper which reveals red paint underneath. Having spoken to the owner, Simon, he assures us that the car has not been painted or repaired during his ownership however this could be from a repair carried out under a previous owner.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

All glass on the car appears to be in good condition, there were no chips, cracks, or scratches on any of the glass during our time with the car and all exterior trim pieces were in equal condition, showing no signs of significant ageing.

During his ownership Simon has had the rear glass replaced on the Cabriolet roof, if you have any questions on this please feel free to ask Simon in the comments below.

Interior

For the first time in the 911’s history, the interior of the 996 got a well received shake up, featuring curvaceous styling while still retaining hints of the historic 911 interior such as the five gauge dash layout.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather interior on this car really stands out from the crowd, offering fantastic contrast to the silver exterior. On the whole the leather (of which there is plenty) is in good condition, with the only evidence of wear being on the drivers side seat bolster, where unfortunately it has started to wear - this is shown in our interior review video, along with our high resolution gallery images.

The carpets are in good condition, showing minimal wear and little fading for the age of the car. The pile still feels deep and luxurious and it provides a modest amount of sound deadening, allowing for temperate conversations to be had with ease.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in great condition, with the red leather providing a feel of luxury to a usually mundane area of any car. The five gauge clock layout sits proudly behind the steering wheel, with no visible damage to any of the plastic shrouds or plexiglass covers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, showing little signs of wear for how often it has been handled in its 23 years of life. The leather has not visibly lost its colour and the stitching appears to be clean and intact.

The gear stick is in fair condition, with the gear layout still clearly visible on the top surface, however there are some scratches to the plastic visible on the plastic insert and the red leather insert starting to show signs of wear around the edges.

Mechanics

Following the introduction of the brand new water cooled 3.4L flat six engine, Porsche provided the naturally aspirated engine with ~296bhp, a 0-60mph of just 5.4 seconds, and suspension and handling tweaks to match.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started first time during our cold start video, running smoothly and idling predictably. The addition of the sports exhaust and intake add a little more noise to the car than would have been present under OEM spec, however this does not affect the overall impression of refinement the 3.4L flat six engine provides.

During our time on the road with the vehicle the car pulled smoothly, utilising its ~296bhp efficiently, and the gearbox changed through gears fluently without any crunching or grinding.

Simon has recently had the vehicle tested on a rolling road and the engine does still produce all 296bhp, proving how mechanically well maintained this car must have been over the years. A printout of this can be found in our gallery images with the rest of the paperwork and service history.

Suspension and Brakes

The 996 Cabriolet features tweaked suspension over its predecessor, accounting for the heavier weight of the motorised convertible roof and stiffer chassis. This provides ample cornering ability and a good amount of comfort considering the stiffness of the suspension. During our time on the road we didn't hear any audible clunks, knocks, or bangs coming from any of the suspension components.

The brakes worked fine during our time on the road, providing ample stopping power with no lurching or excessive binding.

The Drive

This car drives well, as is to be expected from a car that wears the 911 name.

The interior fittings and fixtures make very little noise in the way of rattles, the only noticeable noise being a very slight creak from the rear of the car - presumably from the hard top.

The car accelerates well and handles nimbly, with the engine behind you and the added noise of the sports exhaust and intake only adding to the experience. The manual gearbox is engaging to use, and provides the driver with a real connection to the car along with its nicely weighted steering and sharp pedal response.

Please watch the On the Road video to see the car starting and driving.

Electrics and Other

All electronic systems on the car work as expected, with the dashboard having been fitted with a modern touchscreen head unit that works perfectly. All buttons on the dashboard and centre console work as designed, and the speakers on the car work also.

The air conditioning still runs cool even in high temperatures such as the 27 degree heat we had on the day of our visit. The LCD display for the air conditioning does have one dead element, meaning some numbers are obscured slightly, however we did not find this to affect the function of the air conditioning system at all.

History and Paperwork

With good paperwork from Simon’s ownership and beyond, it is evident that this example has been well cared for and wanted for very little during its 23 years on the road.

The car comes with good history and an extensive collection of paperwork - please review the paperwork section to see the documentation.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
