Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 996, a clean-sheet take on the old rear-engined formula, now coming in to its own.

Porsche, always progressive in their approach to the 911, overhauled the dated air-cooled philosophy with the 996 in 1996 and brought the car into the modern age. There was no sacrifice to the bloodline of its rear-engined ability, and in every quantifiable way, it was quicker and more proficient than the previous generation. It also opened up a new market for the brand, for those who felt the cult of the previous generations of 911's was too extreme and uncompromising. Lighter, more powerful and stiffer than ever, it still retained the classic 911 silhouette and should be considered the perfect entry point to 911 ownership.

This 2000-year model of the manual gearbox version of the 996 Carrera is presented in a handsome "Metallic Ocean Blue" colourway and is complemented by a full leather interior. It has seen a handful of subtle but effective upgrades to the suspension and dealer option Sport Classic II BBS wheels. Adorned with a superb servicing history, it has also seen an upgraded IMS bearing and new Sachs clutch and comes to market from ~3 years ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Joe the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the style of the 996 Carrera, the clean uncluttered lines still look sensational.

Joe bought the car simply due to the raw appeal that the 996 has in droves. The car has been carefully driven, ensuring that the engine was warmed up correctly and has been used mainly for leisure journeys over the three years of ownership.

Fastidious in taking care of the car, with any issues quickly addressed by Porsche specialists, several factors including the impending ULEZ changes, a growing family and subsequent lack of use means it has to be sold and appreciated by someone else. Joe will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The appealing exterior presentation is complemented by the lowered stance and higher-spec wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has been fitted with a set of original dealer option 18” Sport Classic II BBS wheels, all are in excellent condition with a set of Uniroyal tyres upfront from 2017, with the rear Continentals being a year older. All display a healthy amount of tread.

The owner has also provided a complete set of new centre cap badges to replace the current items if desired.

Bodywork

The structure appears very solid, with no issues noted on the floor pan, inner wings or suspension mounts. We couldn’t spot any unsightly blemishes on the exterior metal work, with the panel fit appearing even throughout with equal gaps noted on the door shuts. The bumpers are well-mounted, and all of the doors open and close without issues.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Metallic Ocean Blue" paint finish is excellent with a deep healthy lustre and is free of swirls, there are a handful of minor scuffs mainly on the bonnet but they’re superficial and the owner has assured us that these will be professionally machined out in time for the new owner handover. The colour match is true to the eye. The nose of the car is remarkably free of stone chips, thanks to a carefully prepared front-end respray, with the door edges and bumper corners betraying the age of the vehicle.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are good throughout, with some minor perishing noted on the front luggage compartment rubber seal.

The front and rear light lenses are clean with no notable problems with the appearance of the body trim.

Interior

The clean and well looked-after leather cabin belies the age and mileage of the car.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fully furnished with leather seats which along with the centre console have been treated and renovated. All are in good shape, with a level of light age-related wear noted on the driver seat that doesn't distract the overall presentation.

The carpets are clean, with no signs of dampness. The car will come with the original mats, but the owner has also obtained a set of black ones which will be part of the sale.

Dashboard

The leather padded dashboard is free of significant damage, with the plastic facia and centre console holding up well with nothing more than the odd minor mark noted. The binnacle and switchgear display well.

The Kenwood DAB Bluetooth unit is fully operational, and the car also comes with the original head unit. The leather door panels and headlining are intact and free of distracting marks.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A simple leather bound affair, the steering wheel looks in good condition in matching grey. The gear lever is also free of any significant wear. Take a look at the pictures to see closer detail.

Mechanics

Poised and composed at all times, the 996 is an exceptional ride.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start didn't reveal any issues, with the engine firing up and idling without any drama as expected for a car that has been well-maintained. The exhaust condensation soon cleared up and no leaks, including engine fluids, were observed on the day.

The gearbox operates smoothly having also benefited from a new clutch and shift cables. The previous owner installed an aftermarket sports exhaust pack and it has seen a replacement stock manifold. Watch the "Mechanical Review" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has been treated to a modest suspension height adjustment, which improves the stance of the car. On the move, there was no unwanted knocking or creaking to be heard.

The brakes operate perfectly and evenly, with no pull or judder noted. The steering remained true throughout acceleration and braking.

The Drive

The subtle suspension adjustment and sports exhaust transform the feel of the car, already building on exceptional handling prowess. Feedback and balance have always been the modern-era 911's expected traits, and the car even at lower speeds simply feels like it's everything you need in a sports car.

The 3.4-litre flat-six ran with no hiccups, with no reported issues in regards to oil pressure or engine temperature. The driving experience is really helped by the good visibility which creates a sense of lightness, making it a surprisingly able car for urban areas, but obviously, it's best appreciated on the open road.

Electrics and Other

Key functions, including the aircon, electric roof, seat adjustments and windows are all operational. A new battery ensures that nothing untoward should happen as we see out the winter.

History and Paperwork

Over £3,500 has been spent in the last two years, including the replacement of the IMS bearing, this is a solid example of the 996 911.

The car comes with a pleasingly thorough record of annual service stamps, with main dealer stamps up to 2007 and independent Porsche specialists thereafter. Over the three years of current ownership, the IMS bearing has seen an update, along with a new Sachs clutch and shift cables. In addition, a new battery and new coffin suspension arms for each corner have been installed. Prior to this, the Vario cam solenoid had been replaced and all brakes and discs have been replaced within the last 9 years. It comes with its original under luggage lid factory paper spec sticker intact, 2 keys and its full leather owner's wallet.

The car also comes with a good record of previous MOTS and the owner will include a fresh new ticket up to March 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Joe, your Porsche looks in excellent condition and for your information I was looking to purchase a 996 many years ago but for whatever reason the purchase did not happen. I am located in Scotland and whilst the pictures, videos etc. are excellent I (assuming I move forward) may look to view, is this possible ? Due to your location if I decide not too view can we possibly discuss via a phone call, zoom etc.
