Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A modern performance sports convertible from Porsche; classic flat six, four wheel drive.

The 996 was first introduced in 1997 replacing the air-cooled 993 with a new water-cooled engine, fried egg-shaped headlamps and a sleeker body styling. A 3.4L flat-6 powers this four-wheel-drive cabriolet, offering the driver ~300BHP to tap into. The 996 is the lightest water-cooled 911 you can get your hands-on, and it was it's 80kg lighter than the 993. The car is perfect for those who crave a driver-focused 911 without spending an arm and a leg.

This particular example is a Carrera 4, featuring the 6 speed manual gearbox for those heel-toe enthusiasts. First question most people will ask with a 996 like this is "what about the IMS", the answer, a full rebuild by Hartech in 2019.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Ian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A perfect way in to Porsche 911 ownership, ideal for the summer.

After Ian handed back his company car during the pandemic he decided to dip his toe into the world of Porsche ownership. He was on the search for a sporty convertible to enjoy during the summer and came across this 911 Carrera 4 locally, and after a test drive instantly loved it and couldn't resist taking it home with him.

Ian has enjoyed the car since last summer however since going back to the office the Porsche isn't getting the use it once was and so Ian has decided to sell. Ian will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A controversial design at launch, in Ocean Blue though, this car holds its own.

Wheels and Tyres

Optioned 2 piece 18" SportClassic wheels give the 996 a sporty stance on the road, a more performance-focused look. Overall the condition of the wheels is good, when you get really close you can notice some very minor surface corrosion that would look excellent with a little attention.

All 4 wheels are wrapped in premium rubber, Bridgestone Potenza and Pirelli P Zero dated between 2016-18, each wheel has plenty of tread, ready for the new owner to enjoy this summer. Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos for a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

A much more narrow package than the 993 that this 911 took over from. This is a smart example, the panel gaps are all tight and don't show any signs of damage, the doors hang well off their hinges and open and close just as you would expect on a car of this calibre.

The car comes with the hard-top for a more cosseted experience when driving in the cooler winter months.

Paint

A deep Ocean Blue (L3AZ) covers this car, and it looks great in the bright sunlight on our visit. The finish has a good, deep lustre, and the paint coverage is even with no issues with the lacquer observed.

When we got really close to the car while filming the exterior videos we noticed a very small mark on the rear bumper, some very minor stone chips as you would expect, and a very small scratch on the rear arch/tailgate where the pins from the hardtop roof have caught the side of the car. Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos to get a closer look at the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

All the glass, including the rubbers and seals, are in good condition with no significant damage. The bumpers and surrounding rubber seals are all good.

Please watch the exterior videos to see the electric soft-top roof and windows fully working without any issues. Just one small point to note, there is a small plastic chip on the front and rear nearside light clusters.

Interior

Just as you would expect from a sports car of this calibre, only the finest leather and sports seats.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in Savannah draped leather, a nice contrast to the blue exterior. Optioned with the draped leather front and back, while assessing the seats we did notice some obvious leather creasing and cracking as you would expect from seats of this age.

They hold their shape considerably well but would benefit from treatment over time to preserve the leather. The carpets look in great clean condition, and the rear seats look hardly used, please take a look at the interior video tour for more details.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks excellent, it is in great visual condition with no cracks, significant blemishes or damage observed. The car was optioned with body coloured centre console as pictured (XME).

All of the switches, controls, gauges and dials are said to be functional. Ian reports everything is working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are original and in good condition, the gear stick does show age-related marks and a few light scratches. The steering wheel looks great and in line with the rest of the interior.

Mechanics

300BHP and the three pedals 911 enthusiasts want, four wheel drive helping to deliver that power effectively.

Engine and Gearbox

A 3.4L water-cooled flat-six engine is fitted in the back of this Carrera 4. The car started smoothly without any fuss in our cold start video suggesting regular maintenance and use.

The engine was fully rebuilt in 2019 by Hartech, with ~£9,000 parts and labour spent. The gearbox is said to be fully functional with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes visual condition supports its maintenance regime. And the suspension is reported to be smooth yet firm while driving, without any unusual sounds or knocks noted. Just as you would expect in a car of this calibre.

The Drive

Doesn't time fly quickly, the 996 has become a desirable, driver focused modern classic. It's a usable modern classic that's ready to be enjoyed and loved this summer.

Ian reports a great drive in this Carrera 4, and loved his first steps into Porsche ownership, he had a lot of fun driving on weekends last summer.

Electrics and Other

As you would expect from a car that has been well looked after, the electrics appear inline with the rest of the condition of the car. Ian reports everything is working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A solid 911 996; great colour, manual, rebuilt engine, ready for the summer season.

The car comes with a healthy stack of service stamps/history and receipts, MOTs and the such like for the new owner to sift through. With the engine having been rebuilt 2 years/~4,000 miles ago, it's a 996 that you can secure without that niggling fear of IMS bearing failure, the big associated bills and beyond having been covered by the former keepers.

The private plate will be removed before sale and changed to it's original plate, which can be seen in the paperwork photos.

Hi, there are no pictures of the soft top, what condition is that? Is it tight. Is the rear window okay. Does it have algae or mould?

Thanks

Sam

Sorry, can’t delete this so need to reply to myself. The soft top is in the video and pretty poor condition.

Hi, the plastic window in the folding roof looks like it’s gone hazy – is that correct? Also, I’m assuming the engine cover is held open by a plastic rod because the gas strut doesn’t work – is that correct? Many thanks,

Hi
The plastic window is a bit hazy, nothing a good clean wouldn’t fix.
No it isn’t held up by a plastic rod. The gas strut works fine.
Thanks
