Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Becoming more desirable with every passing year, the 996 Carrera 4 is quickly finding its home in the modern classic market.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche 996 Carrera 4 was designed as a sports grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver. Upon the launch, the 996 rocked Porsche fans around the world with its new front end design and smooth sides without the larger wheel arches that people were used to with a 911. Four years later in 2002 Porsche released a facelifted model - keeping the die-hard Porsche owners happy with its return to a more distinctive 911 front end.

This particular example is a pre-facelift car and has been in the care of current owner for the past ~19 months, during which the car has spent the majority of its life in a dry storage unit. Over 8 previous owners this 911 has covered just ~60,200 miles and boasts a stamped service book, and looks lovely in the not often seen on a 996 "Seal Grey" paint over blue leather interior.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Wayne the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve owned Porsches in one form or another for over 20 years, with this 911 likely to be my final send off to the marque after many enjoyable years of ownership.

Wayne has spent the majority of the last two decades across the pond in America, where he has enjoyed a wide range of cars - mainly Porsche’s. Having moved back to England just a few years ago he once again found himself with the inevitable itch for one of Germany’s favourite sports cars and, after spending some time looking for the right one, settled on this 2001 911 Carrera 4.

Attracted to the car for its low miles and considerable service history, Wayne has enjoyed his year and a half stint with the car. However, worsening arthritis has made regularly driving the car too difficult and as such he has decided to find his beloved 911 a new owner. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

This 911 is the more desirable facelift model featuring removable hard top, navy blue soft top, and Seal Grey metallic paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

This example is fitted with the later 997 wheels, giving the car a more modern look. They are in good condition overall and do not show any obvious signs of curb damage or corrosion.

Michelin Pilot Sport tyres are fitted on all corners and these appear to be in good condition, DOT marked 2014, and free from any damage or perishing to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

On the whole the bodywork is in good condition, with the bulk of the main body being free from any dents, dings, or misaligned panels. Looking over the body of the car we didn't spot any signs of corrosion, however there is some slight areas beginning to creep through on the two lower corners of the removable hardtop.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Seal Grey" (L6B4) paintwork presents extremely well and is a colour that you don't see often on the 996. There is only some light stone chips to the front - no more than to be expected for the age of the car, and the paint looks to be free from any major scratches or scuffs.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition too, with no major stone chips to the front glass and no damage to the rear window on either the hard top or the soft top which is also in good condition and free from any rips or tears and all working correctly.

The only thing to point out is a cracked section on the bottom edge of the nearside rear light - this can be seen in more detail in our exterior gallery.

Interior

Finished in luxurious dark blue leather, the 911 benefits from a driver centric design synonymous with the 911 lineage.

Seats and Carpets

The blue leather upholstery is well presented, showing no major damage save for some light stretch marks to the drivers side bolster. Both rear seats are also in good condition, with the drivers side rear seatback showing some impressions in the leather - however these do not break the surface of the hide.

The luxurious pile of the 911 carpet is still in good condition, with no major wear or tear present and no colour bleaching either. The car is still fitted with genuine Porsche embroidered mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks to be in good condition with no obvious damage or marks to the upper dash. Likewise there is no major damage to the centre console or surrounding trim.

The instrument cluster looks to be scratch free with the odometer showing ~60,200 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel shows little to no wear which is great to see on a car of this overall condition, likewise the gear stick is in similar condition with a slight shine developing on the leather which is in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Mechanics

A 3.4L flat six is mounted to the rear of the car, mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox which combines to create the iconic 911 driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

Having been regularly serviced during the course of its ~22 years on the road, the engine starts without issue on the first turn of the key and doesn’t hesitate to provide access to its ~300bhp. The typical flat six design of Porsche’s engine is synonymous with the marque and provides the distinctive exhaust note we all know and love.

Likewise the six speed manual gearbox shifts through the gears without issue and does not grind or stick in any of the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

As to be expected from a sports car such as this, the 911 has moderately stiff suspension, but manages to find the balance between comfort and performance amicably. The brakes look to be in good condition, with no obvious lipping visible on the discs and seemingly plenty of metal left on the brake pads too.

The Drive

During our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car start, drive, and change through the gears with ease. The car feels nimble and responsive on the tarmac and offers a great level of feedback to the driver.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we observed no notable faults with any of the electrical systems, including the powered soft top which opens and closes at the push of a button.

History and Paperwork

With a stamped service book, a modest ~60,200 miles, and nothing but dry storage for the last ~19 months, this could be the perfect 911 for someone wanting to take their first step into Porsche ownership, or even a die-hard fan wanting to give the cabriolet lifestyle a turn.

First registered on 12.04.2001, this 911 Carrera 4 has since had 8 previous owners with Wayne owning the car for the past ~19 months. During that time it has been serviced yearly all the way until 2018, at which point there is a two year gap up until its most recent service in 2020 at a mileage of 59,589. Since its last service the car has travelled less than 1,000 miles and has been kept in a dry storage unit owned by Wayne. The car currently has a clean MOT which is due to expire on 25.06.2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello, I imagine at this mileage that the clutch is still original but can you please let me know if it has been replaced or feels like it might need doing? Any other major works known of? Thanks. J
