Introduction

Becoming more and more desirable and maturing nicely, the 996 facelift variant is one that won’t be around for long at these prices.

Launched in 1997, the Porsche 996 Carrera was designed as a sports grand tourer, but it was also comfortable and reliable enough to be used as a daily driver. Upon the launch, the 996 received quite a lot of criticism from the die-hard Porsche fans around the world. This was mainly due to the new design of the head lights and the smooth sides without any larger wheel arches, that people were used to with a 911. Not to mention the move to water-cooled engine.

Just four years later the facelift model featured newly designed headlights which were more similar to the turbo version car as opposed to the Boxster - this kept the die-hard Porsche owners happy and more importantly a larger 3.6 litre engine, powering the new model from 0-62mph in just 5 seconds.

This particular example has been cared for by Roy for the past 12 years, and after covering nearly 60,000 miles in the Porsche, it’s safe to say that Roy has enjoyed the car immensely. Importantly you'll see Roy has looked after the car in terms of servicing too - more recently using the very knowledgeable and reputable Porsche Tech in Coventry.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Roy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Being a petrolhead at heart, I couldn’t resist the 911 Carrera 4 when I saw it for sale back in 2009.

Roy has enjoyed using the Porsche on a daily basis for a number of years and it’s truly been a fun car to own.

Roy's daily is now something a little more practical, with more seats, and this has meant the 911 is sitting there getting very little use - hence the reason for the sale of his much loved Porsche.

Please feel free to leave any questions in the comments below and Roy will be happy to get back to you.

Exterior

This 996 is the more desirable facelift version - it has the best of both worlds with the removable hard top.

Wheels and Tyres

The Porsche wheels present in a good clean condition. There are some slight bits of corrosion creeping in from behind some of the spokes and the odd age related scuff here and there - nothing a wheel refurbisher wouldn't be able to quickly sort out.

Importantly the tyres are all matching Pirelli P Zero Rosso, and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Porsche looks in excellent condition.

Walking around the car, the panel gaps all look to be matching as they should.

The hard top also presents in good condition and the powered convertible roof operates quickly going up and down. The fabric roof is clean, with just few crease marks as you would expect.

Paint

Finished in the bright Arctic Silver, this lovely Porsche 911 stands out in a crowd.

In general the car is very well presented. There are some age related marks noticeable around the car such as stone chips or small scratches in line with the use and mileage of the car.

On closer inspection during our visit we noticed slight lacquer peel on both door mirrors - not really noticeable on the images.

Please review all the images and videos supplied in the media pack below.

Glass and Trim

There are no noticeable scratches on the windows to point out on the Carrera 4 and the window seals all look to be in good condition.

The nearside rear light does have a small piece missing from the bottom corner.

Please see the images for more detailed photographs.

Interior

Luxurious black leather finish perfect for long journeys and driving daily around town - plus that awesome 6-speed gearbox that's just so intoxicating.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats embossed seats with the Porsche crest look to be in good order with some age related wear. The driver's upper bolster has more wear and a slight split. This is a job most car upholsterers would easily take on and replace that section of the leather.

The door cards do have some age related wear to them but present in a condition that looks to be in line with the mileage of the car.

The carpets are in good condition having spent most of their life with a protective mat over them. There are some slight marks on the driver’s side carpet.

The interior gallery section will show more detailed photographs.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents in good condition with no obvious damage or marks to the upper section. There are a few small marks around the ignition switch and also the edge of the glove box. This also drops straight down when opened as the support strap is currently missing.

The instrument cluster looks to be all scratch free with the odometer showing ~91,169 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel shows some age related wear which is in line with the daily use and mileage of the car.

The gear knob is in similar condition, with some wear showing as you would expect

Please see the photo gallery for more details.

Mechanics

The updated 3.6 litre flat six was used in the facelift 996 model giving you 315 bhp to entertain yourself with.

Engine and Gearbox

A masterpiece of an engine and when mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox it really comes alive.

Porsche installed the 3.6 litre flat-six, which pushed the power of the 996 up to 315 bhp. Roy tells us that the engine runs lovely with no noises coming from the car that shouldn't be there.

Roy says the gear change is precise and smooth and the car pulls well through all of the 6 gears.

There is no IMS receipt in the history file, however, Martin from Porsche Tech has inspected with no issues to note.

As you can see from the cold start video, the Carrera 4 fires up at the first turn of the key and sounds fantastic.

Suspension and Brakes

MacPherson struts with aluminium arms keep the 911 grounded and sitting just as Porsche intended. Looking at the underside, the suspension components do not raise any concerns to mention after a visual inspection.

The brakes are cross drilled discs on all four corners. These look to be in good condition, with no lip to the edges of the discs.

The Drive

After the amount of miles that Roy has covered in the Porsche, it’s easy to tell when something is not quite as it should be - and Roy is pleased to say the car is driving lovely.

Electrics and Other

The car starts up as it should with no warning lights displayed on the dash.

The satnav works, but you should keep in mind that this is from 2002.

The heaters do work but the LCD display for the temperature readout and air direction have failed.

History and Paperwork

A total of 9 service stamps and 3 brake fluid change stamps shows that the 996 has been well maintained.

The most recent service was carried out at 91,133 miles, when a brake fluid change was also carried out. Substantial invoice in July 2017 came in at £2,355.66 for a major service and other work carried out / parts used - this included changing the spark plugs.

The handbooks are present along with 2 keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.

Thank you Roy for the reply. If I was the successful bidder would you consider delivering the car to the address below which looks quite close to you as I will be there from Thursday to Saturday this week. I will be at a horse event in my lorry so could drive the car home and my wife could bring the lorry. Thank you.

The Postcode for the houses at the front entrance gates is ******.

Thank you

Good afternoon Roy,
Do the heated seats work? Also the heater display does not work from your description but i presume the actual system is still operative as in temperature adjustment and vent allocation?
Thank you,
Richard

Hello RSP.

As Roy says, all the functions work as they should, it is just the LCD display that has failed. When testing the functions they were working, and I found that if I looked at it from some angles you can still make out what is selected.

It is a common issue with 996, and a fairly cheap repair that can be completed at home with a few tools and a little knowledge (many youtube tutorials out there).

Hi Roy, Are you aware of any other work carried out to the car before your ownership? excluding the routine servicing.
Thanks.
