Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 996 C4S - a combination of engineering brilliance and pure delight.

The Porsche 911, is a car for the everyman and the enthusiast. A challenge to drive when you want to be, it offers the additional bonus of practicality, comfort and the allure of a rear-engined supercar. Established as the first of the water-cooled Porsches, the company never forgot what made the 911 so special in the first place, and made a charismatic classic into a modern all-rounder. The Carrera 4S is the one that ticks the right boxes, thanks to its stability control, wide arches, iconic red reflector strip and plenty of punch for thrill seekers.

This beautifully presented 2002 Carrera 4S in Seal Grey and black leather interior has seen over £11k worth of spending in the last five years, which covers the key items such as IMS upgrade and Boroscope inspection and a KW Coilover suspension which elevates it above the majority of C4Ss out there. The car is sold with excellent service history and an MOT to July 2023.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Will the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Everyone should own a 911 at least once - or preferably twice...

Will is no stranger to high-performance Porsches and has owned several notable versions of the 911 over the years. Having spotted the unique opportunity of obtaining a car that has seen in the excess of £11,000 spent in recent years, he took on the car thanks to the care of duty of the previous owner, and the simplicity yet effectiveness of the suspension modifications.

Used as an occasional car, Will has several reasons to part with his C4S, with a lack of space and a lack of use being the main factors to sell.

Exterior

Beautifully presented - the C4S is the pinnacle of the normally aspirated 911s.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18" hollow spoke Turbo 5-spoke alloys are in sparkling condition and are adorned with a decent set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, all of which appear to be around 5 years old with good thread.

Bodywork

We could not spot any discernible damage in regards to the underside of the car, with the inner wings and suspension mounts appearing to be solid. The exterior also reflects the positive structure of the car, with no visual observation of panel damage or blemishes.

The panels look flush fitting, with equal door gaps throughout. The bumpers are well mounted along with decent side skirts. All of the doors open and close with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish displays a healthy lustre, with no flatness and an even paint match. The nose has a light peppering of stone chips, but none have penetrated too deeply into the coat.

There are a handful of light scuffs noted on the bodywork, well within the realms to be resolved by a detailer if needed. The paintwork appears to have been well protected, with very little evidence of outdoor elements.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in good shape, with no significant damage in terms of chips and is free of lamination damage. All of the door rubbers and glass seals are intact, with the glass door shut lowering / lift action functioning well.

The trim is well preserved, with just a little mild sun bleaching noted on the plastic windscreen scuttle. The headlamps and taillight lenses are free of significant damage or fade.

Interior

Finished in classic black leather, the well-kept interior is textbook 911 - no-nonsense and business-like.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats show general signs of use including light creases on the front seat bolsters and light wear - all in line with the car’s age and mileage with evidence of careful use.

The carpets and mats are in good condition and suggest careful use.

Dashboard

The cabin is well presented with no outstanding issues of note. The facia and dashboard padding are both intact, with minor signs of wear on some of the lower plastics but nothing that would constitute a hard life. The silver centre console is clean.

The instruments are all legible, and housed within an intact leather binnacle. An aftermarket Pioneer 7" touchscreen multimedia player with Apple CarPlay has been retrofitted.

The sunroof and air-conditioning were proven to function without faults.

The Alcantara headlining is intact with no creases or damage and the door cards are in good shape with just minor signs of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good shape and the gear lever and handbrake display minor marks on them, but do not distract too much.

Mechanics

Recent work and a healthy servicing schedule complement its quality engineering.

Engine and Gearbox

Firing up with no hesitancy, the flat-six engine did not present any issues in terms of the cold start, with the ignition warning lights all remaining in check after the twist of the key.

The car idles evenly with no unwanted noises.

The engine is neatly presented with evidence of regular maintenance, along with a professionally mounted Sports Silencer kit.

The six-speed manual changes gears without any reported problems and the clutch is well-weighted with a healthy biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The 996s firm but absorbent ride along the uneven roads of the Cotswolds didn't upset the balance of the car, with no knocks or thuds heard during the drive.

Partly due to the uprated RPM Technik KW ride-height adjustable coilover system suspension set-up, the owner is very confident with the manner in which the car handles itself.

In terms of the car braking, it slows down and stops without drama.

There is a little surface corrosion on the discs, due to a lack of regular use.

The Drive

The car was driven a good distance, with a mixture of country lanes and some picturesque uphill inclines, all ably handled thanks to the 996's grip and balance. The C4S's stability is well regarded, and at no point did the car feel that it would give way thanks to the clever PSM.

The car performed with no vices, the steering free of vibrations, with no wobbles during braking and sharp turns. No abnormal noises or vibrations were heard during the drive.

The owner has not reported any issues with the engine temperature or oil pressure

Electrics and Other

The car comes with a Porsche car cover, as well as an RPM Technik adjustment tool for the springs.

History and Paperwork

Subjected to some professional suspension upgrades, the car has seen over £11k worth of spending in recent years.

Complete with a healthy number of service stamps and a selection of invoices going back to 2005. The real focus is the spending that has gone into the car in the last 5 years, with bills tallying up to over £11,000 almost all of which was spent at RPM Technik should provide plenty of confidence that the car has been in the best possible hands.

Asides from the usual maintenance, the car has seen four new wishbones, but is also fitted with a KW V3 Suspension kit. The same company also replaced the IMS upgrade, new clutch, water pump, oil operator, coolant change, boroscope inspection and fitted a Sports Silencer kit.

The car comes with a selection of historical MOTs, the owner's wallet, two keys and an MOT to July 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
