Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 996 is the most sensible path to owning a Carrera badged car, a new era for the 911.

In the evolution of the 911, the first generation of water-cooled known as the 996 series, has become something of a well-known secret. Don't let the purist's tell you it's not a real Porsche though. It embodies all of the models' qualities and was developed to be a far easier proposition to live with. Stronger, quicker and with an added practicality to be used as a potential daily driver, the 996 models should be seen as a superb entry point into the world of the 911.

This 6-speed manual convertible 2002 Carrera comes with a hardtop and has full-service history and just 4 previous keepers under its belt. Finished in the iconic Arctic Silver with the optional 18" alloys, this late model has seen a succession of attentive owners and presents itself as something of open-top bargain.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Adam the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I will miss the Porsche, but it definitely won't be the last one I own!

As the latest in a line of owning Porsches, Adam was attracted to the 996 Carrera as it offered everything he needed in a sports car with reliability, pace, equipment and usability. Not generally used as a commuter car, Adam enjoyed it during sunny day trips with his son. The car is being sold as he has already bought another sports car and with its loss of garage space is now surplus to requirements.

After 2 years of ownership, Adam will be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments section below.

Exterior

Elegantly finished, the hardtop combo adds a unique element to the lines, as well as practicality.

Wheels and Tyres

The optional 18" upgrade 'Carrera' alloys are in good condition, with the smallest signs of kerb damage noted on the off-side front item. The tyres are well within the legal limits and show even wear.

Take a look through the images and videos to see the detail.

Bodywork

The panel fit and gaps are even throughout, with no issues in regards to opening and closing the passenger doors. Overall the car is in very good shape, with no notable issues in regards to the car structure, floorpan or galvanised body-shell.

The slightest hint of corrosion is starting to show on the near-side inner front arch lip, a typical place on this model. Blemishes are noted on the offside top of the A-pillar and the hardtop has a handful of minor imperfections. There is also a light dent just above the near-side rear lamp cluster, but overall the car is free of metal damage. View the pictures to see the details.

Paint

The paint finish is of an excellent standard, with even coverage throughout with a good lustre and evidence that the car has been stored indoors. There are a few minor marks noted on the bonnet which has a handful of scuffs and the odd mark noted elsewhere but these have not penetrated through the paint and a specialist could easily treat them with ease.

The off-side wing mirror has a little lamination damage. The car is remarkably free from significant paint chips. Please note due to the failing light some images for this listing may appear to be darker than the actual silver finish.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen was replaced in 2013. There are no issues of note in regards to the glass or trim, all are in good order and well in line with the age and careful ownership of the car. A similar story on the hard top and soft top pictured too.

Interior

The cosy and well-finished cabin retains its appeal, this example optioned with carbon fibre from factory.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good shape, with no damage to the material, with just the expected wear and a few minor indentations on the rear benches. They are all free from rips. The plastic fairing on the backs of the front seats has a few marks.

The carpeting is in good shape and completely dry both in the cabin and luggage areas. They show typical fade in colour that you see from the age of the 996. The door cards are in decent shape, with minor signs of age on some of the plastic elements.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, with the odd sign of age noted but certainly not enough to distract. The climate control panel and inner binnacle housing have a carbon fibre surround panel. All of the controls function as they should, with no issues in terms of the condition of the dials, switches or instruments although the air-conditioning function may need investigation.

The centre console is well in line with the age of the car and is presented with minor signs of wear. It was sold new with several interior options worth pointing out, including a leather rear console and digitial Porsche sound package with a 6 CD Autochanger.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good shape, with no significant issues in terms of wear. The stitching and leather are all intact. The car has the optional carbon fibre gear and hand brake lever finishing, both of which are in good condition.

View the pictures and videos to see the detail.

Mechanics

With 50 years of development, the 996 embodies the spirit of the original

Engine and Gearbox

The physical impression of the engine is positive, with no signs of leaks or wear. The cold start video did not present any issues with the starting or the tick-over of the car. Once warmed up, the engine performed well with no misfiring. There are no issues with the gear change or clutch operation. The car has also seen a pair of new exhaust boxes. The radiators appear to be good.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen a recent set of new front brake pads, discs and sensors, and as result, there are no complaints about the cars ability to stop with no drama with no shakes or pulling. The dampers are decent, with no issues with their performance. The car has the optional Porsche Stability Management system installed.

The Drive

As with any 911, the driving experience is unique. With the 996, Porsche managed to tame the rear-engine layout, but still retain the characteristics of the drive. With the hardtop on, the car is a cosseting drive, and the quality of the engineering is still evident. As an occasional car, it has not been used for racing and its recent usage is more in line with weekend drives.

Electrics and Other

The front luggage lid may benefit from a set of new struts. The removal and replacement of the hardtop is straightforward and did not present any issues with its fit. The soft-top mechanism operated perfectly, with no staining from the motors. The soft top itself is in good condition with no damage noted. All of the roof lining and rubber seals are in good condition, with no evidence of leaking.

History and Paperwork

With a service history showing how this 996 has been well pampered over its lifetime, and presented in great condition, now would be a great time to

This 996 has seen a regular service schedule throughout its life. Even when the car's usage slowed down in the 2010s, the MOT and servicing continued on a yearly basis. It goes without saying that Porsche servicing is a highly specialised job and so the main dealer and Porsche specialists stamps should add a considerable amount of confidence.

In the current owner's guardianship, the car has seen a new battery and lambda sensor, as well as a front brake overhaul and a new exhaust system. The car comes with a stack of its previous MOT's back to 2007. It comes with its owner's wallet and booklets, including the service book and has an MOT to April 2022.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi Adam, just following up on my question around the brake hoses. Also, listening to the video I notice a chirp at low revs, has the belt, alternator or pulley been replaced recently?

Thanks

Hi Gareth – apologies I thought I had replied to this. This chirp comes from the new exhaust system, at least I only noticed it after that was fitted a few months ago. Has been no need to replace belt, alternator or pulley as far as I am aware, thanks. Also, I am not sure I saw your question about the brake hoses? Brakes were all recently checked so don’t think there is an issue? Thanks. Adam

Thanks Adam, I think there may be an issue with the messaging system as I get a syntax error each time I post a question and also don’t get an alert when you reply so have to check manually.

Further to my above question about IMS(if you could please advise) I was look at the pictures of the receipts and had some questions:

One states the air conditioning system had failed (2012), in the video you note the AC is not blowing cold, do you know if the system was repaired since the 2012 comment and that it currently just needs a regas?
There is also a receipt stating the headlamp washer has been disabled, are they both currently functional?

Thanks,
Gareth

Hi Gareth – Please see earlier response re IMS. I have never done anything with the air con, I only use the car in summer with the roof down or in winter on dry days but no need for air con! It doesn’t blow cold so it may not have been fixed, but I don’t know to be honest, as I said in the video it could just be a re-gas. I am afraid I also don’t know about the lamp washer, as far as I know they work fine but I will check when I get home thanks. I… Read more »

Thanks Adam, appreciate you taking the time to respond to my numerous questions, I do have another! Do you have the receipt for the clutch replacement, aside from trying to work out if there is any mention of the IMS, I’d also be keen to see if the DMF was also replaced.
Also with regards to brake lines/ connectors, have these been replaced as there is an advisory on these?

Thanks again.

Hi Dan – see response below re IMS. You can see from the cold start there is no excess smoke from the exhaust on cold start and none either when car is warm. No signs of any oil leaks and the new stainless steel exhaust sounds awesome! Thanks. Adam

Hi Gareth – I asked the same question when I bought the car. There is lots of history but nothing about IMS, but clutch has been replaced, and is lovely and light, so the chances are IMS was done at the same time, but no way of checking without taking our gearbox….

Thanks Adam. Do you have the receipt for the clutch change? Would be interesting to see if there is any reference or of it would be possible to check with the garage if the IMS/ RMS was done.
If not, has there been regular reports at the time of oil change as to whether any metal shards have been found in the oil filter?
Thanks

Hi Gareth – no receipt I am afraid but when I bought the car I took it to a local Porsche specialist I have used for other cars, he felt the clutch and guessed it had around half its life left – bearing in mind the mileage of the car it means it has almost certainly been replaced and the IMS is likely to have been done then. Certainly no reports of anything in the oil on an oil change and no sign of any IMS issues. Thanks
