Introduction

Dom Ginn
Photographer

Have you ever considered a commute with a rear-engined legend, these cars can do it all!

Noted for its remarkable ability to retain a genuine supercar status without any compromise to usability and quality, the 996's reputation as a grand tourer will still encourage the driver to exploit that Porsche talent despite what the so-called purist says. It’s this all-around ability that allows the 996 series to be one of the few high-level sporting cars to be used confidently on a daily basis. Factor in the superb handling and exquisite build quality, and the Carrera 2 is a genuinely finely balanced drive which is free of the over-reliance on electronic chassis controls. It is a good place as any to start your 911 journey.

Finished in the not often seen Porsche colour of "Meridian Silver Metallic" (L6A6), this 2002 early-facelift 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet with the bigger 3.6-litre engine is presented with a distinctive racy "Boxster" red leather interior and has the huge advantage of being fitted with the preferred 6-speed manual transmission. This very original and well-presented car is sold with a good service record and evidence of recent spending. It has an MOT to 22nd June 2024 and comes with two keys.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Will the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The German engineering of the Porsche has always been attractive to me.

Will has owned this 911 (996) for ~2 years. He tells us "I have always dreamed of owning a Porsche and being able to save and afford a 911 has been a massive achievement. A dream that was achieved with extreme hard work and dedication". He went on to tell us that he chose this particular car due to the stunning colour combination, and the fact that the previous owner, an elderly gentleman had maintained the car to a decent standard.

The six-speed manual gearbox too was a huge incentive for him too, perfect all in all weathers and occasions. He says "Time with my Porsche is sadly coming to an end, due to a lack of space and work commitments. I'm hoping that it finds another careful owner who will cherish it as much as I have", Will is on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The 911 cabriolet adds an undeniable glamour to proceedings, and enables you to better hear the tones of the iconic flat six.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18" alloys are in presentable condition, with signs of peeling paint observed and light wear, mainly on the offside side rear wheel.

The tyres are mixed brands, the offside rear tyre being less than three years old. All seem to show a healthy level of tread, see the gallery for a closer look.

Bodywork

The car is free of dents or scrapes, with no reported issues noted on the structure of the car. The doors open and close with ease, with no issues with the panel gaps and fit.

The only significant blemishes on the metalwork is a cluster of corrosion spotted on the top of the off-side A-Pillar, and some wear to the lower front bumper as pictured.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Porsche "Meridian Silver Metallic" paint finish is even, with no significant signs of flat spots and offers a decent lustre throughout. The front bumper appears to have seen a repaint in the past, and has some scuffs etc in line with mileage since then, the colour match appears ever so slightly lighter in some angles than the rest of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

There are no issues with the glass or seals, the body trim is complete and correct for this version and appears to be in decent shape.

The headlamp lenses have suffered from age, typical for this era of 911, and will probably benefit from a polish with the correct products to get them clear.

Interior

A striking red leather interior optioned from factory, it certainly fuels the desire.

Seats and Carpets

The "Boxster Red" leather interior has been said to have been reconnolised, and generally presents well. The seats show typical age-related wear and light scoring on the driver seat and a few indentations on the rear seats, but overall free of significant damage.

The carpets are in good shape, with light signs of age noted. All were said to be damp-free on the day.

Dashboard

The dashboard appearance is boosted by its re-dyeing, which is clearly the main focus of the reconnolisation. The stitching is decent, with a few marks noted on the centre console.

The binnacle and dials are in good shape, with the switchgear said to be all function with a few controls showing their age. The head unit is the only non-standard fitting to the interior we spotted.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, with minor signs of wear. The gear lever is also presentable with some signs of age noted on the gaiter.

Mechanics

Punchy and agile, the 911 is also a cinch to drive and the 996 still gives an authentic 911 driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up with no issues, the engine has benefited from regular servicing and idles well with no undulations or unwanted noises.

The gearbox and clutch function well, with the owner confirming their positive smooth feel in the mechanical review video.

Suspension and Brakes

The car drives well, with no knocks or thuds said to come from the steering or suspension.

The braking performs as expected for a well-maintained car, and is said not to cause any problems in use, with no squeals.

The Drive

The 996 is well known for its civilised manners and acts as a perfect daily driver with enough excitement on tap when needed. Well-weighted with tactile steering, compact dimensions and good visibility, the Carrera 2 flexibility is heightened by its precise 6-speed gearbox.

No reports of issues with the car's engine temperature or oil pressure have been noted, with the owner stating its dependability during his ownership.

Electrics and Other

The canvas roof is in decent shape, with a handful of small marks but should come good after a deep clean. it raises and lowers without any problems.

History and Paperwork

At least £2,000 has been spent in the last ~2 years, this car comes to market from ~2 years ownership.

The car comes with a handful of documents, including inspection reports and maintenance checklists, a recent invoice for an adjustment to the roof operation as well as an engine ECU replacement. The owner has stated that the car has seen a new starter motor. It comes with a service book with four stamps, with the most recent engine and gearbox service carried out in May 2022. The car comes with its original wallet and booklets, two keys and has an MOT to 22nd June 2024. Please note that the vanity plate will not be part of the sale. Its V5 has been applied for.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
