Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Pure, open-top driving pleasure - pairing a mid-mounted flat-six with razor-sharp handling for a perfectly balanced, grin-inducing sports car experience.

The Boxster S (986) sits at the heart of Porsche’s first-generation mid-engined roadster story, delivering the perfect blend of style, balance, and performance. Introduced as the more focused and powerful sibling to the standard Boxster, the S brought with it a larger 3.2L flat-six engine, uprated brakes borrowed from the 911, and a sharper chassis setup, cementing its reputation as a true drivers' car.

What makes the Boxster S truly stand out is how it delivers Porsche’s signature driving dynamics in a convertible package, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the road with the top down. With a lightweight chassis, a near-perfect weight distribution, and features like Porsche Stability Management (PSM), it offers an engaging and exhilarating experience while retaining the everyday practicality and style that Porsche is known for.

This car comes to market from just over a year with our vendor, it has had a recent suspension arm replacement, new off-side rear control arm, updated near side front top mount, new boot strut, new door lock control unit and replacement petrol flap - all updated this year with a total spend of over ~£2,000.

The Boxster comes with 2 sets of keys, Porsche drivers' manual and folio - annual servicing was last carried out in July 2024 and comes with an MOT valid until 05.06.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s a car that feels equally at home carving through twisty roads as it does cruising in comfort, every journey is exciting.

The current owner James, is a fan of fast cars with the Porsche being one of a few quick cars he's owned over the years, he told us "I bought this fabulous car about a year and a half ago. I was delighted by the drive and had fully intended to use it a lot in fine weather. It did however take a very long time to get it ULEZ Compliant due to waiting for the Certificate of Conformity from Porsche and then waiting for TFL to grant the compliance."

During that time it was parked in his secure garage, James started it and run it locally for a mile or so every couple of weeks to keep the fluids going and check everything was in order. Regretfully he didn't use it much at all and probably did only about 250 miles altogether due to the delay time awaiting ULEZ. James was then rather fortunate in being able to sell his company and with the proceeds bought another car thus rendering this Boxster surplus to requirement.

When James decided to market it, he discovered a few irritating squeaks and rattles and so to ensure that it was to be sold 'All Good' he took the precaution of having some suspension work done. Trailing control arm, top mount, suspension arms and also the fuel cap locking solenoid along with the offside door lock control mechanism. It was also serviced just after I bought it.

James told us, "It drives beautifully and anyone buying it should have oodles of trouble free, fun motoring".

James will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Timeless curves, wide stance, and purposeful mid-engined proportions, the 986 exudes pure sports-car appeal – sporty, elegant, and unmistakably Porsche from every angle.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 17” multi-spoke alloy wheels, these show in good condition overall and the centre Porsche emblems present nicely. There were a few signs of kerbing to the wheel edges and spots of age - nothing too serious and could easily be improved by an inexpensive wheel refurbishment.

The wheels are fitted with Ottima Plus tyres with a spec of 205/50 to the fronts and date codes from 2019. To the rear, these are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero's and show a spec of 255/40 and have date codes from 2023.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Porsche and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality. We found no major areas of concern when looking over the bodywork of the car although there was a small ding on the bonnet.

We noted slight scuffing to the underside of the front of the car, mainly where the Porsche sits lower on the road, although nothing that really concerned us.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 'Deep Black' paint shows a decent lustre and even colour match throughout. Photographing the car in the bright sunshine did show the finish had holograms and swirls to the paintwork. A good level of detail and polish correction would be of benefit here to remove some of the imperfections.

There are a handful of very minor stone chips, mostly on the front of the car and the front splitter, but overall, nothing major. We noted there were signs of age to the passenger side wing mirror where the lacquer had worn through.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Porsche showed with no major cause for concern. Windscreen, side windows and rear window all show well, with no significant scratching, marks or chips. The windscreen features a graduated tint, as per the option code, 567.

The rear lights looked well-maintained although the front lights showed a little sign of age. Seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

We noted a couple of marks to the leather door interior trim on the driver's side.

The convertible roof presented in respectable condition, but had a few marks and blemishes. Overall it would benefit from a clean due to not having much use over the past few months.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

The cabin blends classic Porsche sportiness with everyday comfort - supportive leather seats, a driver-focused cockpit, and a clean, purposeful layout that keeps you connected to the road.

Seats and Carpets

Both of the sports seats are finished in grey full leather and feature 2-way electrical functions. Overall, these show in good condition - there were signs of creasing to the leather on the seats, bolster edge wear on the drivers side and a few marks, but nothing out of the ordinary given its age.

Carpet sections showed in great condition on the interior and checking underneath the carpet showed without worry. Equally in the front boot, this area showed no concerns.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The grey dashboard appears in great shape with no cracks or scratches to report. The odometer showed ~74,895 miles at the time of our visit. The display area of the dials and gauges is clear and without concern, with the triple gauge setup looking very smart. All dials are functional, showing clearly with no obvious marking or scratching to the facings across the driver's section.

We noted that no warning lights were displayed on the dash when the engine was running.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finished in grey leather, the Porsche steering wheel is in lovely condition, just a little sign of use to the edges. The wheel features inline Tiptronic function buttons.

The automatic gear selector showed well and without concern - the same quality was noted on the handbrake.

We've detailed more images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, in our Interior Gallery section - head over to see more shots of what the Boxster has to offer.

Mechanics

The 3.2L, flat-six engine delivers ~250BHP and a 0-60 time in ~5.7 seconds with a thrilling, balanced drive thanks to its mid-engine layout.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns, and the Porsche performed without issue while running and out on the road. We saw no issues, smoke, or heard any unusual noises.

A great note was that there were no signs of oil leaks when we checked over the Boxster's parking spot. Overall, there was nothing mechanically concerning at the time of our visit.

Both the automatic and Tiptronic gear functions worked smoothly on the road, with no unwanted noises. The gearbox showed no issues regarding its performance while driving.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the Boxster through the tiptronic gears and getting an overview from James' perspective on how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no observed issues.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The 986 delivers a driving experience that’s as addictive as it is rewarding. With its balanced layout, sharp steering, and precise handling, it feels agile and planted through every corner.

The flat-six responds eagerly, delivering smooth, linear power and a soundtrack that’s pure Porsche. Whether carving through winding back roads or cruising with the top down, the Boxster S makes every journey an event, blending precision and excitement in equal measure.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we noticed no electrical faults. All dashboard lights turned off when out on the road as expected, and all dials and gauges were functioning without issue. The typical Porsche 'sticky buttons' were noted on the centre section, fairly typical for a car of this era.

The optional equipment codes, detailed in the servicing book, note that the Porsche includes: (C16) UK LUX spec, (XX1) leather edged floor mats, (197) stronger battery, (249) Tiptronic transmission, (375 and 376) Two-way electrical seats, (432) Tiptronic buttons for the steering wheel, (441) radio preparation, (446) wheel caps with coloured Porsche crest.

Other included features are: (551) wind deflector, (567) top-tinted windscreen, (571) activated charcoal filter, (573) automatic air conditioning, (584) storage box on engine cover, (981) leather dashboard and door panels, and (983) leather seats.

James let us know that a brand new battery has been fitted and he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and that everything should be working correctly to the best of his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from just over ~1 year ownership, the Boxster comes with 16 previous service stamps, recent suspension works and 2024 annual servicing.

The Porsche has recently had its suspension arms replaced and a brand new battery has been fitted in August 2025. A new door lock control unit and petrol flap was replaced in July 2025. Shortly before this, the off-side rear control arm, near side front top mount and a new boot strut were all replaced in June 2025. The total spend on the Porsche this year was over ~£2,000.

We cover off a further overview of the Boxster's history in our paperwork gallery.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
