Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The allure of the 911 Turbo is unique, its intoxicating ability is hard to resist - especially at 996 money that's arguably the best value 911 Turbo money can buy.

Hitting the public in 1997, the 4th generation of 911 was noted as the start of a new era for Porsche. The twin-turbo wide body that came after the normally aspirated variants three years later quickly dispelled any claims that Porsche had gone off course. The all-wheel drive manages a potent 414bhp, with the potential to deal with almost any car in front of it. The 996 generation with the 3.6-litre flat six derived from the Le Mans-winning GT1, is generally considered as the best opportunity to obtain a 911 Turbo at relatively sensible money.

Finished in a subtle metallic midnight blue, this 2003 Turbo is fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox and comes with an excellent service history with just 7 previous owners. It has also been subject to an extensive overhaul in the last 18 months by a Porsche specialist to the sum of almost £9,000. The car has also seen a handful of desirable performance enhancements, including a new stainless steel manifold, a genuine 997 GT3 gear shifter, an uprated Sachs clutch kit and four recently fitted tyres. It comes with an MOT to January 2023.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It looks great from every angle, but the joy is in the drive.

Stephen has always hankered for 911 Turbo and grasped the opportunity when this very well-maintained example came up for sale. Encouraged by the reassuring YouYube video of Friends Green Porsche working on this actual car, their footage of the road test proved that it drives as well as it possibly could.

Stephen has used the car on occasional drives over the summer, relishing in its sure-footed performance and unique driving experience.

Stephen told us that the cars now need to be sold to free up funds for a separate opportunity - a bitter-sweet sale!

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Well presented with a stunning paint finish, the muscular lines still mean business today.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys are in very good order, with no signs of significant road wear.

All four Michelin tyres were replaced in 2021, and therefore well within the legal limits.

Bodywork

The floorpan and structure look solid, with no issues noted on the chassis rails and jacking points. Externally the car presents well, with the panel fit, shut lines and bumpers all looking as expected.

All of the doors open and close with no drama. The car is free of any form of dents and we couldn't spot any discernible corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Adorned with the rare Midnight Blue Metallic colourway, the quality of the paint finish is very good, with very little in terms of scuffs and scratches. The lustre has been well preserved, with a pleasing shine throughout.

The nose of the car shows a handful of stone chips, mostly to the front bumper and a few were observed on the metal work too but appeared not to have penetrated too deeply.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and their respective rubber seals are in good condition with no signs of damage. The trim has been well preserved, with no immediate issues beyond the lightest of minor ageing processes.

The light lenses are free from cracks of discolouration which can so often be the case.

Interior

Beautifully crafted, the cabin has resisted the years very well.

Seats and Carpets

The driver's seat displays typical light wear, but the rest of the leather seats are all free of rips or rough usage, with only minor marks detected on the plastic casing behind both front seats.

The carpets and mats are in very good shape, with no notable defects in the cabin or luggage area.

Dashboard

Other than a few minor marks on some of the plastics and glovebox, the dashboard is well above the expectations of a car of this age and mileage, with no other impediments noted on the switchgear, controls or dials. All are said to be functional.

The Radio/CD system was subject to a recent renovation.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Other than a little wear around the gear lever, the main controls have lasted well.

Mechanics

Behind the Turbo's robust engineering, comes a devastating yet controllable power.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately with no signs of problems or unwanted noises.

All warning lights remained off after the start-up, and the engine idles sweetly without any undulations.

The clutch shows no signs of slipping, having been replaced with an uprated Sachs unit. The gearbox is slick, aided by the installation of a genuine 997 GT3 gear shifter.

The new stainless steel manifolds have also been renewed.

The car really sounds tight at all times and no fluid leaks were observed on the day.

Suspension and Brakes

Any suspension maladies have been ironed out thanks to the recent work on it, with no observations of knocks or rattling.

The added assurance of a full brake overhaul also places confidence in the car's ability to stop safely without any drama.

The Drive

The car performs around town very well, largely thanks to the big overhaul. The low-speed drive around town didn't show off the potential within, but the owner assures us that he's very confident that the car can tackle any long-distance journey.

Its all-wheel-drive setup reassuringly feels stable and safe. The steering and gearbox are painless to use in traffic, with Porsche's signature approach to comfort and usability - all adding to the near-perfect driving experience.

Electrics and Other

The sunroof is fully operational.

It has received a new coil pack and has seen the PCM unit overhauled.

History and Paperwork

Complete with a service carried out less than 3,000 miles ago, it has also seen almost £9,000 worth of spending in the last 18 months.

No less than 13 stamps fill the servicing booklet, with the last service invoice dating from the spring of 2021. At the same time, the car was subject to an almost £9,000 overhaul, which included the renewal of the stainless steel exhaust manifold, new coil pack, repaired PCM unit, renewed discs and pads, new suspension lower arms, the installation of a genuine 997 GT3 gear shifter and an uprated Sachs clutch kit and release bearing by Friends Green Porsche, who have uploaded a YouTube video of the work.

In addition to this, all four tyres were replaced with premium Michelin rubber.

The car also comes with a sizable selection of Porsche dealer invoices mostly covering serviceable items. The car is sold with an MOT to January 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
