Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Who doesn’t love a 911 Turbo? Probably not many… and rightly so – plus the ~420 bhp Mezger 3.6L twin-turbo flat-six is a fantastic engine.

The Porsche 911 Turbo (996) was launched in 2000, marking the start of a new era for the iconic model. From the factory, it delivered an impressive ~420 bhp through an all-wheel drive system, enabling it to put power down quickly and reliably. This combination of performance and traction helped the Turbo quickly gain popularity, effortlessly upholding the 911’s storied reputation. In addition to its dynamic capabilities, the 911 Turbo also benefited from Porsche’s renowned German engineering, offering comfort and practicality that made it a well-rounded sports car for everyday enjoyment.

This particular 996 Turbo comes from an almost ~16-year, no-expense-spared ownership and is finished in the stunning 'Arctic Silver' with the desirable black leather interior.

Adding to its long list of desirable points, the car has modest mileage for its age and has a manual gearbox; yes we know, it's 'the one to have' and comes fresh to auction with a very keen reserve - meaning you'll have to be in the bidding to win this one.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After almost 16 years, I will be sad to see it go.

John purchased the 911 Turbo around 16 years ago, and since then, he has enjoyed every single outing in it. These have included 10 trips to Le Mans, which have been immense fun and, when at home, trips out, usually at a weekend… but never in the rain!

Meticulously maintained from day one of ownership, John’s motto is quite simple: “If it needs it, it has it”, and that is exactly what he’s done. Regular servicing and a nice collection of invoices suggest a well-cared-for 911, what more could you ask for.

John will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The 911 Turbo is a stunning car to look at – made even better in this case with the additional front and rear spoilers.

Wheels and Tyres

Probably the best-looking wheel for a 996, the ‘Turbo Twists’ are in great shape. There are a couple of minor kerb marks and a very tiny amount of blistering under the powder coating in a couple of places, but nothing which has broken through. These would be super easy to have refurbished by your local wheel refurbisher if desired.

The tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, which have covered only a handful of miles and therefore have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Taking a close look at the 911 body, the condition is excellent. The panels appear to align as you would expect, with an equal gap, and there were no dings, dents or blisters spotted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Arctic Silver', the paintwork presents well with a nice finish. There are a couple of very minor stone chips on the bumper, but far less than you would imagine for the age of the vehicle.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows in the Porsche appear to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches. All of the window seals and rubbers appear to be in good order, with no obvious signs of shrinkage or deterioration.

The front and rear lights are in good condition with no damage to the lenses. However, the headlights have just started to discolour slightly, but an easy fix with one of the headlight restoration kits that are available.

image

Interior

Black heated leather with Porsche crested headrests - the perfect option.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats had the options list ticked when ordered, as these are electric with memory on the driver’s side, heated and also have the Porsche crest embossed into the headrest. There is some minor colour wear on the driver’s bolster, but nothing excessive. The rear seat base on the driver’s side does have a small tear in it, but these are super easy to replace, only held in with Velcro and the same through the 996 range, so easy to find second-hand.

The carpets are in excellent condition. You will notice some chequer plate-style mats in the photos; these were fitted for a trip to Le Mans. The campsite gets very muddy, so these saved the original mats and carpets from getting dirty.

John tells us he does have the factory mats tucked away, which are included with the sale.

image

Dashboard

The black leather dashboard is in good condition with no damage. The instruments appear to be working correctly, with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing ~78,830 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel and gearknob are in place; both show light signs of use, which are in keeping with the car.

image

Mechanics

The 3.6-litre flat-six is a fantastic engine for the 996… but add two turbos to the equation, and it takes the 911 to another level with ~420 bhp on tap.

Engine and Gearbox

The 911 fires up without hesitation, and there was no smoke present when we visited the car and started it several times. The car had an engine swap actioned by Porsche by the former keeper in 2010 prior to John purchasing. He mentions that he has had no issues with the engine, testament to his 10 trips to Le Mans in the 911 Turbo.

The car runs with no issues reported and pulls strong through the six-speed manual gearbox, which has smooth, precise shifts.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the 911 performs as you would expect: a solid, planted feel without being harsh. No knocks or bangs were heard coming from either corner of the car, even when going over speed bumps.

Stopping the 911 is a set of drilled discs which all appear in good condition and have no lip to suggest excessive wear. These bring the car to a stop in a straight line and with no juddering.

image

The Drive

Driving a 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo is a vivid blend of old-school intensity and everyday usability. The Mezger-derived 3.6-litre twin-turbo flat-six delivers a muscular surge of boost that feels superb, while the all-wheel-drive system delivers confident handling and traction in all conditions. Steering is communicative, the ride firm but controlled. It’s certainly a car that feels devastatingly fast even by modern standards, yet still refined enough to cover long distances with ease, as John can vouch for from his trips to Le Mans.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear appears to be in good condition and is working as it should. The original head unit is in place, and there is a small amount of stickiness on the on/off button, which is common.

John also has the discs for the factory satellite navigation system.

There is also a dash cam included with the sale, and also a car phone, although this hasn't been used for some time and not tested.

image

History and Paperwork

Owner’s manual, service book, two keys, invoices - all present.

Just two former keepers have had the pleasure of owning this lovely 911 Turbo before John’s almost 16-year ownership. As you can see from the service book, the car has been serviced at regular mileage intervals. There are several invoices present showing parts fitted and work carried out over the years, including the engine swap by the former keeper in January 2010. The owner’s wallet, complete with the various manuals and two keys, are present and correct.

Please note: the registration number 7 JHD will be removed and is not included in the sale.

This is probably the best time to get yourself behind the wheel of a Turbo variant 911, and this one in particular has low ownership, modest mileage, and excellent service history - making it excellent investment potential too.

Here's a list of optional extras the car has:

342 Seat heating
446 Wheel caps with coloured Porsche crest
567 Top-tinted windscreen
635 ParkAssistant
650 Sun-moon-roof

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. hi, John. Could you tell me whether the car has an infortainment system and, if so, what are its features (eg multi-CD player; BOSE, etc?
Also, do you know whether the engine power is stock or has it been upgraded?
Finally, is the sun/moon roof watertight?

Hi,
The description states “ The panels appear to align as you would expect, with an equal gap” yet it’s very clear something is not aligning with the bumper. Can you please shed some light on this?
Thanks
