Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consigner

The legendary all-wheel-drive turbocharged 911 - a benchmark for every other performance sports car.

Introduced in 2000, the 911 Turbo (996) completely blew the competition out of the water, the all-wheel-drive system combined with car's performance made it arguably the best choice on the market. Coupled with the comfort and practicality of reliable Porsche engineering, it continued to ensure the Turbo remained a household name.

The 996 presented a milestone for the German carmaker with a redesign developed by Pinky Lai (also responsible for the designs of both the 987 Boxter and Cayman), lines were smoothed, windscreen pushed back, it also offered a level of comfort that both upon its release and now makes it so appealing to many. The redesign allowed the car to be significantly lighter than its predecessors, whilst being 45% stiffer - in essence, it was the first of the modern 911 supercars, but still incorporated the recognisable tear-drop shape of the 911s earlier models.

This example has been in Bruce's careful hands for last 13 years, he always dreamed of owning a Black 911 Turbo and when the opportunity arose he couldn't give it a miss. We really like how original the car is, along with the condition of course.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Bruce the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Owning a 996 Turbo has always been a childhood dream of mine, what a car!

Bruce has always been a big Porsche fan, previously owning a 996 Carrera 4S, which he loved but always dreamed of owning a Black Turbo variant. When the opportunity arose, Bruce jumped at the chance. Following the reviews of having bulletproof reliability, Bruce mentions it was a no-brainer.

He has owned this Turbo for 13 years and mentions the car has been serviced throughout his ownership but never required and major mechanical or exterior work. He has had the alloys refurbished, a recent paint correction, ceramic coating, and new Porsche carpet mats.

The car is highly original with the only modification to note is the grill inserts to protect the radiators and a classic iPod connection in the glove box.

Due to a growing family, and not enough seats in the Turbo, along with the lack of use, Bruce is, unfortunately, having to part with this car. He mentions to us, these cars were built to be driven, and we couldn't agree more.

Bruce will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Featuring the famous 911 silhouette, the Turbo features wide-body styling for extra aero goodness.

Wheels and Tyres

The Turbo is fitted with 18" alloys which really compliment the stance of the 996. Pirelli P-zeros wrap the large alloys - all in great condition with a good amount of tread.

The wheels are in great, non-curbed condition.

We only found a few typical marks on the Turbo centre caps, take a look at the photos and videos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears very straight and in great condition throughout.

All panel gaps look correct and tight, which no obvious signs of corrosion observed. The only imperfections were a few very minor stone chips to the front bumper / bonnet and a very slight scuff to the front splitter.

Please review the detailed exterior videos and photos of the car to see the bodywork in detail.

Paint

Finished in 'Basalt Black', this Turbo looks great and was the real selling point to Bruce, he was specifically after a black-on-black colourway. The paint is deep in finish and colour and looks even across all the panels.

Combined with the black leather interior, the car is timeless.

Please view the images and videos for an in-depth view of this example.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition all around, the seals look tight and not perished.

Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

Luxurious full leather cabin with a performance-focused layout, we love a 996.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather sport seats, carpets, and door cards found on this example - simple and timeless, all present in very good condition and look to be in line with the low mileage.

We did notice some minor wear to the driver seat bolsters in the form of creases - common for 996 seats and they appear in line with the usage of the car over time.

Please take a look at the images and videos for a more detailed view.

Dashboard

A crisp and clean layout from years of racing experience - we love the traditional 5 Porsche dials layout.

The black dials match the colour scheme of the car and all the white digits are clear and very legible.

Please take a look at the images and videos to see the dashboard up close.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both original items look and feel in great condition with no signs of major wear.

The 6-speed manual transmission is by far one of the more sought-after versions of the 996 Turbo.

Mechanics

A raspy flat-six block fills this engine bay and the twin-turbos give an extra 120BHP from the base Carrera.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a water-cooled twin-turbocharged and intercooler 3.6-litre flat-6 engine, derived from the Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 race car; Mezger at his best.

Importantly, this car is a manual example - a 6-speed gearbox to give you that authentic driver-focused experience.

Please view the video of the car being started from cold with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The 996s were fitted with multi-link rear suspension taken from its predecessor, the 993. This saved costs and the suspension already being bang on - hence not needed to improve.

The car also features distinctive red Porsche calipers and drilled brake discs found in this example. Bruce assures us the car has no abnormal sounds from these parts, and they work just as indented - prompt stopping power and firm sporty suspension.

The Drive

The real reason you are buying the car, it's the high-performance race car, legal for the UK roads.

The 996 Turbo is the thinking persons turbo of choice - the car gives you all the feedback you need and will handle any corner you throw it at, while not disappointing on the straights either, together with excellent investment potential. Head and heart decision perfectly balanced.

Electrics and Other

The electronics and cabin on this era of Turbo were a step up from the air-cooled generation. 8-way power seat controls, all working electric windows, PCM multimedia control unit, and iPod connection.

Everything works as it should do to Bruce's knowledge.

History and Paperwork

With 13 years of ownership and a nice wedge of service history and even a recent service - this black-on-black 911 Turbo is a real catch.

With the 996 Turbo now over 20 years old since introduction, many examples have seen many miles and most being close to the 100k mark, this example has ~63,000 recorded on this car, it sits on the lower end of average mileage for a manual coupe like this, with a reduced use in the last few years.

There is a really good level of paperwork and history with this example - MOT documentation as well as a fully stamped service book. The car had a service on (11.06.2021) so the new owner can drive away with extra peace of mind.

Please take a look through the images to see all the original paperwork which comes with the car.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi is clear.

Hi there! I’m not sure I fully understand your question, but I will attempt to answer to the best of my knowledge. The vehicle has not had any repair work of any kind to any panels during my ownership: it has benefited from a recent ceramic coating and paint correction? Brakes were given the all clear my Matt @ Fearnsport a few months ago – I specifically asked if discs or pads needed replacing and the answer was an emphatic ‘No’ – some more regular use / enthusiastic braking was recommended to get rid of surface corrosion. I’m working a… Read more »

Hi There, I am looking at bidding from New Zealand. We have a rigorous compliance check to get the vehicle on the road. Is there any body repairs that you are aware of. Also any rust underneath the vehicle?
Kind Regards

Hi Antony! No body repairs and no rust. Note zero advisories on MOT certificates- any rust issues would be presented there. Matt @ Fearnsport regularly states its the cleanest 996 turbo he works on! Happy bidding ?
