Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

The modern incarnation of Stuttgart's mid-engined flat 6 roadster, these S models have ~254BHP to tap in to.

The Boxster (986) was Porsche's first car designed as a road going roadster since the 550 Spyder. A mid-engined flat 6, it was released in 1996 ahead of the 911 (996) with which it shared much of the front end body, interior and engine architecture. The car was a success for the marque, its biggest volume selling vehicle until the Cayenne was released in 2003. Initially released as a 2.5L, a 2.7L came later and then the S with 3.2L engine.

This particular example is a late 986 S, benefitting from the facelift that came to the model range in 2002 and being a later car not suffering from engine issues the earlier models had. This car has the rear and IMS seals replaced by Porsche last year at a cost of ~£1,300. It is presented beautifully in a not often seen "Lago Green" exterior over grey leather interior. Well specified from new with optional upgraded split rim wheels, Bose sound system and interior touches like Porsche crest on the headrests and other interior trim, if you're in the market for a modern classic, this low mile example deserves a good look.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Pete the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Being a Boxster fan myself, and having owned 3 of these, going to collect this one was a bit of a busman's holiday as the saying goes!

Pete bought this car from the 9th owner, who had had the car for a year prior. As mentioned, he knows this model well and looks upon them favourably. This particular example caught his eye initially due to the low mileage, but also being a late production car for 986, before the 987 was released in 2005.

In addition to the condition, the specification of the car from factory was another attraction. Pete will be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Coming in a rarely seen Porsche colour of Lago Green, this roadster presents in excellent condition.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the optional upgraded split-rim 18" wheels by BBS, these look in very condition on each corner. The car is fitted with Pirelli P Zero's on the front, and Continentals on the back.

View the image gallery to see the details on the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

This little roadster is a very tidy package, in keeping with the low mileage. Panel gaps, shut-lines, operation of all the moving doors etc is as you would expect and look correct.

In addition to this, we didn't notice any dents of notes to the panels, nor any corrosion to the panels. Importantly we've have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the colour of "Lago Green / Dark Teal Metallic" (LM6W), it's a rarely seen colour on a Porsche, and certainly not seen very often on the 986. The paint has an excellent lustre and finish to it, even in colour across all the panels and again in keeping with the mileage.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The later facelift models come with a glass window to the rear, much better than the older plastic window. All the glass looks in good condition, and the trim across the car looks good too. Some areas of the plastic trim like in front of the windscreen could be improved easily with the correct detailing products to bring the car up an extra level.

Interior

A smart grey affair, this two seater roadster presents in very good condition.

Seats and Carpets

The car features heated seats with the Porsche crest in the headrests, two optional items. They are finished in grey leather and look in good condition. The wear on the seats is in line with the mileage, the passenger seat has a small mark as pictured to the inner side bolster.

The carpets are also grey, and look in good condition too, showing the typical fading to the colour that this era of Porsche carpets is known for. Take a look at the video review to see the whole cabin.

Dashboard

Wrapped in matching grey leather, the dashboard looks in very good condition. The instruments have white dials with chrome rings to give a sporty touch. View the gallery to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Optioned with the Tiptronic controlled steering wheel, and also Porsche crest on the gear selector and handbrake leaver. The items present in good condition, wrapped in matching grey leather to the rest of the cabin.

Mechanics

Mid engined with a 3.2L flat 6 pushing out ~254BHP to the rear wheels, these roadster offer a healthy balance of performance and practicality.

Engine and Gearbox

The 986 Boxster featured the same engine architecture as its bigger brother the 911. The later S like this example really weren't to be sniffed at with ample power available. Coming with a nice history file, last year at Porsche the rear main seal and IMS seals were replaced, along with an inspection at a cost of £1,300.

This example has been optioned with Porsche's automatic gearbox, better known as "Tiptronic". Watch the video review to see the car starting from cold with no issue, and on the road for a short drive, the car going through the gears with no issue too.

Suspension and Brakes

Drilled discs and red painted brake calipers offer an uprated braking performance for this late model 986. On our short drive, the car was compliant through the local roads, no untoward noise from the suspension was noted.

The Drive

As you'd expect from Porsche, the drive is one of the biggest selling points. This model arguably turned the marques fortunes around, and unlike other models that have come and gone, the Boxster lives on. It's also incredibly practical if you know how to pack wisely, with two luggage spaces due to the mid-engine layout, you can cram more than you'd expect in to a 2 seater roadster making it ideal for those who have a penchant for road trip.

Electrics and Other

The car comes optioned with the Bose sound system, and also heated seats in addition to the Tiptronic steering wheel. To Pete's knowledge, all the electrics on the car are working as they should do.

History and Paperwork

A cracking example of the 986 S, this late model comes well specified from factory, with low mileage, and is presented in excellent condition, take a good look if you're in the market for a roadster.

The car comes with a host of invoices charting the service history and tracking the mileage through the years. Importantly just last year, at Porsche, the IMS was inspected along with the rear main oil seal and IMS seal being replaced at a cost of ~£1,300. Coming to market from previous ~1 year ownership, it presents beautifully and is a well spec'd car from new with features like the split rim 18" BBS wheels, rarely seen colourway, and low mileage helping to make it stand out amongst a sea of silver Boxsters.
