The 997 Carrera S is a venerable force, a significant step up in performance from a 3.8L flat-six.

Porsche is famous for its high quality performance sports cars. The 911 fits into the bracket comfortable with a 3.8L engine and lovely roar bringing the car alive from its rear mounted engine when out on the road. Being the 997 variant, the exterior and interior styling has been upgraded from previous models with new headlights and wheels. The most notable aesthetic difference between the 997 and the previous incarnation in the 996, was the return to oval headlights like those of pre-996 Carrera's with separate indicator units. The interior was also re-designed with new controls and aluminium trim. This example is the 'S' which brings with it additional power, a larger engine, upgraded braking system, sports suspension, sports exhaust as well as that strong low profile stance thanks to a lowered suspension system.

This particular example comes to market from ~3 years ownership, last serviced ~1,000 miles ago in 2021 and has a solid history where most servicing has been carried out by marque specialist Northway Porsche. Finished in a beautiful colourway of "Midnight Blue Metallic" over "Stone Grey" leather, the car comes with some nice options like white dials for the instrument cluster, 19" "SportDesign" wheels, 12 way electric seats and the multifunction steering wheel with Tiptronic controls.

I've always loved this car, Porsche quality and design is something I admire so much and this car represents all of that and more to me.

Having been a fan of Porsche's for as long as he can remember, Martin is a real fan of 911 quality and performance. "It's a really good car and feels really sporty. You feel safe in it when on the road and its a fast, lovely drive".

Exterior

The 997 was an evolution from its predecessor, a move back to the traditional and much loved front end design of the 911.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has been optioned with 19" SportDesign wheels, they look great with their multis poke design. We noted some small marks on the wheels and could benefit from some polishing to bring them back to their former glory, although it is worth noting that these were refurbished in December 2021 so should only need minor detailing carried out.

The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sports with the rear tyres having been replaced in November 2021 and still showing a good amount of tread on these and no comments in the MOT.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork looked good, we noted no major areas of concern when looking over the car. The panelling sat flush and when activating the electric folding sunroof, all the sections joined back up nicely when opening and closing the roof with no observed issues.

Paint

Finished in a lovely colourway that really showed its magic in the sunlight, the "Midnight Blue Metallic" (L39C) paint is a really special colour. In line with the mileage and use of the car, we did observe swirls marks and some slight scratches to the rear on the paintwork when we looked around the car. There were also minor stone chips on the front bumper sections. Looking closer at the paint it may be a consideration for the future owner to invest in some detailing work to bring the colour and the paintwork back up to its former glory.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Porsche showed in a good condition with no major cause for concern that we noted looking over the car. Windscreen, side windows and rear window all look good with no significant scratching, marks or chips. We noted a slight fold mark on the soft top roof likely from the opening and closing process of this.

Interior

The 997 was a marked step up in terms of the cabin design and finish, this example is no different on that front.

Seats and Carpets

Welcoming leather sports seats wrap the driver in luxury as they enter the car. They are the 12 way electronic seats with memory function and heating option. Overall the seats show in a really great condition, there was slight marking at the side of the seat, likely from seatbelt rub although this was out of sight from the drivers eye, and some indentations on the back side of the seat likely from items stored in the rear.

Carpet sections showed in an equally great condition with only a few signs of driving wear. Porsche logo's were in place on the carpet sections which added to the styling of the cabin interior area.

Dashboard

High quality leathers keep this dash area looking relevant, the dash presented well and nothing looked out of the ordinary here. Overall a fine place to take in the open roads ahead from.

This car has been optioned with white backed dials for the instrument cluster, providing a pleasing contrast to the design. Looking over the dials these also showed in a great condition with ~85,129 showing on clock at the time of our visit. In general, the buttons are in fair condition, in line with the mileage of the car, some of the rocker switches show the typical wear for a 997.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A multi function leather bound steering wheel sits at the hands of the driver when entering the cabin area, with Tiptronic controls. Overall the steering wheel looks good but is showing some signs of wear in line with the mileage and could do with a brief detailing to bring this up to a lovely standard. Some slight marking was visible on silver coloured areas but nothing out of the ordinary.

A fine looking, straightforward gear selector is in the centre area providing control to the Tiptronic transmission, in addition to the steering wheel controls.

Mechanics

The Carrera S carries a larger 3.8L engine, and boasts sports suspension and a sports exhaust also.

Engine and Gearbox

Porsche are renowned for great quality and fast cars, this is not exception to that rule with its 3.8L engine easily capable of taking the owner up to speed in no time at all. We noted no issues from start up either which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the "Mechanical review" video.

Take a look over the video for yourselves to hear the 911 start up from cold and take in the lovely sounds of the 3.8L engine. We go into further detail about the Porsche and take it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Martin took us around some local roads, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

The Drive

Feeling solid on the road and smooth through the corners the 911 engine feels very strong and powerful whilst out on the road. Porsche is renowned for its quality and engineering and this is not missed here.

Electrics and Other

This 911 Carrera S comes really nicely equipped with some desirable extras; multifunction steering wheel, 12 way electronic seats with memory function and lumbar support, seat heating, navigation system and park assist are included as part of the car.

Although we were unable to test every feature on the car as part of our "On the Road" review, Martin assures us that all electrical elements of the car are working as they should.

A solid service history from Porsche and marque specialists, this C16 UK RHD comes with a nice specification from factory, it is very much ready to go.

This car comes with a nice set of options from new, including 19" SportDesign wheels, heated 12 way electronic seats with memory function and lumbar support, multifunction steering wheel wrapped in smooth leather with Tiptronic controls, navigation system and park assist to name but a few of the extra features included with the Porsche.

Having had a recent MOT completed on it, the Porsche has shown no advisories. The 911 comes with a great amount of service history having been regularly maintained by its current and former keepers by OPC or marque specialists.
