Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

As performance-focused as the coupe, the cabriolet adds fresh air to the 911 experience.

A mainstay of the 911 range, the 997 series was designed from the ground up as a cabriolet, resulting in minimal loss of performance or structural integrity. A tribute to Porsche's meticulous engineering approach to every one of their cars, the cabriolet was also only marginally heavier than its tin-top sibling. The soft-top roof lowers in ~20 seconds and can be activated at up to ~30 mph.

Of course, there’s no difference to the coupe when it comes to driving the 997; the 3.8-litre engine offers genuine supercar performance, yet it can be driven as a daily driver. Its sensible ergonomics and well-placed controls lend themselves to a practical and plush experience, with the promise of fun and dynamic handling.

Coming from almost four years with our vendor, this 2006 Carrera S Cabriolet is finished in the desirable Seal Grey with a grey leather interior. It comes with 13 service stamps and a file of invoices from the UK's most reputable Porsche specialists, which includes an engine rebuild and a new clutch in 2020 - this included cylinders 4,5,6 being relined and changed IMS. There's been over £16,500 spent since then, on items that are usual hot spots for these cars, e.g. coolant pipes and tandem pump. The car has also had just three previous keepers and it comes with two keys, a full owner's wallet, an MOT to June 2026 and was last serviced in July 2025.

If you're in the market for a well looked after Carrera S cabriolet with its engine future proofed from known issues, then this could be the car for you.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the way it glides into corners and responds with confidence when I press the accelerator.

David has an impressive history of owning sports and performance cars, and this is his 4th 911, having previously owned two 993s in the past. David wanted to step up to a 997 S and he was impressed by the maintenance record and engine rebuild when he obtained this car in 2022, he has kept the Porsche in dry storage and has used it as a fair-weather leisure and weekend toy.

Sadly it is being sold due to a lack of use and health issues.

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Solid and smartly presented, this cabriolet has been well looked after over the years.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19” 5-spoke alloys are in good condition, showing minor marks but no significant rim damage.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. The front shows a spec of 235/35 and 305/30 to the rear - the front pair are dated coded from 2018, the rears are from 2016. They all have even wear with mild signs of age.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Porsche and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The body is free of damage, with no discernible dents or corrosion. The panels are flush to the body, with positive shut lines. The doors open and close with no obstructions.

The underside appears solid; just a little surface corrosion was observed on the jacking points.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The 'Seal Grey' paint finish has a good, even coverage with a smooth lustre. The nearside shoulder finish of the car has light surface marks consistent with light foliage brushing - the marks are not deep and could be resolved by a mop and polish by a detailer.

As to be expected, the nose of the car has a few minor stone chips, and we spotted a very minor chip on the top of the windscreen frame. There is also a small scratch on the driver's side sill but overall the car shows all the signs of careful use and indoor storage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with decent seals.

The headlamp lenses have a mild sheen of age (an easy process to restore), and the offside front indicator lens has surface scuffs - the rest of the lenses are in good shape.

The trim is cleanly presented, the bumpers are flush to the body, the rear bumper has a mark on the right side, but the other are free of distractions.

image

Interior

Clean and original, the cabin looks positive and has worn its years well.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats have age-related creasing and minor marks, and the driver's side has a small and repairable tear on the outside base - but they are generally in good shape.

The carpets and mats are clean with no dampness.

The luggage trim suggest careful use.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard padding and facia are in good order.

The controls are in good condition too, with the exception of both heater switches due to the common 'sticky button' issue - again an easy repair to replace.

All of the functions work as they should.

The door cards are smart - just the rear side trim has marks. The headlining is in good condition, with mild signs of age seen towards the rear. The driver's side well trim and centre console show marks.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel leather rim has mild wear, the gear lever is good, with some signs of age on the gaiter and handbrake.

image

Mechanics

A reassuring drive with tenacious grip and handling, the cabriolet has an impressive maintenance record to back it up.

Engine and Gearbox

The Porsche starts up without any hesitation, free of unwanted engine wobbles, noises or exhaust fumes. All of the dashboard warning lights remained off.

The engine is cleanly presented with no signs of fluid leaks - it was rebuilt by renowned specialist Northway Porsche in 2020 following an IMS bearing failure. This is reassuring as the bearing was changed, and the cylinders on the right side of the engine (4,5,6) have been installed. Reducing the likelihood of any future issues.

The six-speed manual gearbox operates smoothly without any reported problems.

David informed us that the clutch has a good feel and was replaced in 2020.

image

Suspension and Brakes

There were no knocks from the suspension; it absorbs the road with a firm ride. Components were replaced in 2023.

The brakes stop the car reassuringly - discs and pads were replaced in 2018 and have also seen further attention in recent years.

image

The Drive

The water-cooled 3.8-litre flat-six provides all the torque, traction and poise you’ll ever need in a sporting cabriolet. With the benefit of an engine rebuild by a recognised Porsche specialist around ~11,000 miles ago, topped up by a service in July 2025, there is the added reassurance that there’s plenty of life in the power plant.

The engine performs positively, pulling without any hesitation or untoward noises. David allow the engine to warm up before applying any meaningful speed, as we opened the car up on the 40 mph roads of the New Forest.

The car manages the undulation and bumpy roads with no negative feel, absorbing the road with confidence and no unabated noises. The cabin was generally rattle-free. The steering is precise, with a tight feel, and it corners with sure-footed grip.

David has been satisfied with the car's reliability and told us that the oil pressure and engine temperature have remained stable during his ownership.

image

Electrics and Other

The soft top raises and lowers without any issues, providing a good seal.

The car comes with a wind diffuser in a storage jacket and a Porsche-branded battery charger.

The car is fitted with the Bose upgraded sound system.

History and Paperwork

~£16,500 worth of spending since 2020, including an engine rebuild, offers plenty of confidence.

Registered in January 2006 by Porsche Centre Hatfield, it has 13 service stamps. The impressive number of invoices is headed by specialists such as GCR Central, Purely9, Tagnola Engineering and Northway Porsche, who carried out an engine rebuild and clutch replacement in 2020.

The most recent work includes new engine mounts, attention to the brakes, suspension, coolant hoses, coil packs and electrics. Over £16,500 has been spent on the car in the past 5 years, including an £8,500 invoice for the engine rebuild. Older invoices include new discs, pads and tandem pump.

It comes with its complete owner's wallet, two keys, a MOT to June 2026 and was last serviced in July 2025.

Please note that the registration plate will not be sold with the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, apologies if I missed it in the description but is the Nearside rear window stuck up? It appears to be up when all the others are down?
Many thanks,
James
