Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Sharing the same platform as the Boxster 987, but with a rigid body and improved practicality over its convertible counterpart, the Porsche Cayman offers the best of both worlds.

The introduction of the fixed roof gave the benefit of stiffening up the chassis of the car, which led to Porsche revising the suspension carried across from the Boxster. The exterior of the car was designed using styling cues from classic Porsche’s such as the 356/1, the 550 Coupé and the 904 Coupé, making for a sleek and streamlined silhouette. In stark contrast to its inspiration, the 987 Boxster, the Cayman offers a respectable 230 litres of storage space under its practical hatchback as well as providing ample space inside the cabin for both driver and passenger.

This particular car comes to market from 7 year ownership, just 3 former keepers and last serviced at the start of the year. With ~51,900 miles recorded, covering an average of ~3,700 miles per year, it's a car to enjoy. Finished in white over black, and coming with 19" Turbo wheels, the car also received a little more power in the form of a remap in 2016 recording ~280BHP.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’m a big fan of performance cars, nothing gives you a thrill quite like the noise of a flat six engine right behind your ears.

Chris has owned this car for seven years, having purchased it in July of 2015. Since taking the Cayman into his ownership he has taken great care to look after it as his pride and joy, ensuring a good service history, proper maintenance, and never hesitating to provide for any of the vehicle's needs.

As much as Chris loves this car, he is looking to fund the purchase of a new camper van, and so after much enjoyment and ~20,000 miles covered, the Cayman comes to auction. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The 911 silhouette is one of the most recognisable on the road and the Cayman is no different, a mid-engined sports car having used styling cues from some of Porsche’s most classic and iconic designs.

Wheels and Tyres

This Cayman has the 19” Turbo wheels taken from the Cayman S, and they are in respectable condition for their age, however they do suffer from some minor corrosion on the diamond cut wheel faces. That being said, the wheels themselves appeared straight and true and did not show any visible signs of buckling or severe curb damage.

The car is running Bridgestone Potenza tyres on all four corners of the car and the tread wear is moderate. We have captured high resolution imagery of all four wheels, please feel free to observe our gallery images to see them in more detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this Cayman is in good condition, with no unusual panel gaps and all panels look straight and true. We did notice a spot of surface corrosion on the inside lip of the front wheel arches.

We’ve highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

Paint

The white paintwork is in good condition on the whole, with no visible scratches or major stone chips to be seen. The colour and tone of the paint is even across all panels with no visible disparity from one panel to the next, this is a good indicator that the paintwork is original.

This particular example features a ‘Porsche’ decal down both sides of the car, this can be seen to be in good condition with no evidence of fading present, nor is the decal beginning to lift or peel as far as we can see. Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

During our visit we inspected the glass and trim thoroughly and noticed no visible scratches, chips, or cracks. The same can be said for the surrounding trim pieces, they are in a good condition overall and retain a factory black finish and did not seem to be visibly faded or marked in any way on the day of our visit.

The clear stone chip protectors on the rear wheel arches have some discolouration that comes with age, but they are still in place and doing their job. View the images to see the detail. The car does have a Cayman S badge on the rear, but it is a 2.7L Cayman.

Interior

Deep pile carpet, full leather interior, and respectable luggage space make this Porsche Cayman more than just a weekend car.

Seats and Carpets

The comfortable leather seats provide good grip when cornering and are fully adjustable for height and back support. The leather itself is in good condition, not showing any major signs of wear - even on the usual spots such as the drivers side bolster.

The seats have the Porsche logo embossed into the headrest, a quiet reminder of the attention to detail that is prevalent in Porsche’s designs across the board.

Dashboard

The dashboard features the same leather finish as most of the interior, providing a luxurious feel to a typically mundane part of any car. The dash is adorned with a multitude of buttons to control functions such as stereo and air conditioning, these all appear to be in good shape with no major wear.

The cluster of clocks behind the steering wheel offer a concise and simple layout providing information on speed, RPM, fuel level, and oil temperature. These gauges are well presented and the plexiglass coverings are not scratched or damaged.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in stellar condition for its age, with the leather retaining a good look and feel. There were no scratches to the hide, nor was the stitching torn or damaged during our visit. The silver trim pieces are still intact with no paint having worn off the pieces, and no cracks or loose fittings either.

The gear stick, whilst modestly simple in it’s design, is an ergonomic shape and is finished in the same high quality leather as the rest of the interior. This is not showing any signs of wear and the gloss black insert adorning the top is blemish and scratch free, with the gear layout clearly visible. The leather gaiter surrounding the gear stick is in similar condition, with no rips or visible wear and tear.

Mechanics

Featuring a 2.7L flat six powerplant, a manual 5 speed gearbox and revised suspension, the Porsche Cayman offers a fantastic driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started first time and with little hesitation in our cold start video, roaring to life and settling down to a moderate burble after a few seconds. During our time on the road with the car the engine accelerated well and didn’t seem to struggle or hesitate. The naturally aspirated engine pulls smoothly and quickly through the rev range. Chris had the car serviced in March, and it's worth noting that some tuning/remap work he had actioned in 2016 recorded a power output of ~280BHP.

Paired with the 5 speed manual gearbox the Cayman is definitely engaging to drive, still requiring the input of the third pedal and the left hand, you really get a sense of involvement from the car. Whilst on the road we didn't notice any crunching or grinding of gears, they all fell into place nicely and when asking Chris about his opinion of the gearbox he said it was nice to use and the biting point of the clutch was easy to find.

Suspension and Brakes

The Porsche Cayman features a revised version of the suspension setup from its convertible cousin, the 987 Boxster, due to the fixed roof and subsequently more rigid chassis. This revised suspension doesn’t feel overly crashy, whilst remaining stiff and nimble, with no audible clunks or bangs from any of the corners.

The brakes appeared to be in good visible condition and the car did not hesitate to stop during our time with the vehicle, coming to a stop smoothly and capably decelerating the car whilst driving. Chris has recently had some suspension work actioned as detailed in the paperwork section.

The Drive

The car drives nicey, accelerating smoothly and stopping swiftly, as to be expected from a car of this calibre. The naturally aspirated engine pulls well in any gear, offering up the entire rev range without any lag or delay. When taking corners the car feels stable and stiff thanks to its rigid body and revised suspension, the whole car transforms under heavier acceleration, rapidly devouring the road and roaring directly into your ears.

That being said, the car also handles day to day driving with respectable agility too, navigation the narrow streets and corners of Beverley with relative ease during our "On The Road" video.

Electrics and Other

From our time with the vehicle we didn’t notice any electrical faults, with all dash lights turning off as expected, and all interior and exterior lights working fully. The electric windows go up and down as they should and both the radio and air conditioning work properly, with the air conditioning managing to maintain a steady flow of cold air into the cabin. Both front and rear hatches open from a click of the key and both front and rear hatches open and close with ease.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from 7 years ownership, 3 former keepers and a modest mileage recorded of ~51,900, the 19" Turbo wheels and engine remap make this 2.7L all the more exciting.

Since it’s purchase in 2015 Chris’s Cayman has had regular documented services, along with a myriad of other jobs both small and large, that have been required over the years. We have photographed all relevant paperwork for the vehicle for your perusal, included in which are the service history, repairs carried out under Chris’s ownership, and details regarding the engine remap in 2016. Please note, the private registration number will not be sold with the car, it will be returned to the age related registration number.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
