Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The 997 is a fantastic-looking car, but the Carrera 4S's huge hips take it to another level.

The all-wheel-drive 4S version of the 997-generation Porsche 911 arrived on the scene in 2005, quickly establishing itself as a firm favourite for those who found the motorsports version a little too extreme. Porsche actually developed the 997 Cabriolet version before the Coupe, creating a purpose-designed car, not one conceived as an afterthought. The heady combination of open-top motoring combined with the upgraded 3.8-litre engine, active suspension management, and uprated brakes gave the Cabriolet a distinct character all its own.

Coming to market after ~5 years with our vendor, this well-maintained 2009 example is in excellent condition. Being an "S" with the 3.8L engine, comes with the look-out for bore-score. This problem has been rectified on this example, a full engine rebuild approximately 10,000 miles ago at a cost of £9,500, so it’s just nicely run-in for a new keeper.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned a Cayman and a Cayenne, I felt the need to own a 911, and this well-specified Carrera 4S fitted the bill.

Barry has spent ~5 years with the car, he tells us “Driving the 911 makes me very happy behind the wheel, the handling is fantastic thanks to the four-wheel drive, and the sound of the engine when the switchable exhaust button is pressed is amazing. It's also the only car I’ve owned where people have taken a photo of it, and kids ask me to rev the engine. It has really been a pleasure to own, and I’ve loved every minute of driving it".

In his ownership, he has kept on top of maintenance with his local garage, including important jobs like auxiliary belt replacement in December 2022. Barry has decided it is time to pass on the car to a new owner who he hopes will enjoy the car as much as he has. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

If you think it looks good from the front - wait until it passes you and you see its rear!

Wheels and Tyres

The 997 Turbo wheels were an optional extra, these have since been refinished in black and are in good condition. The tyres are Bridgestone on the front and Kumho on the rear, both of which have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Carrera 4S is in excellent shape, having spent several years in Cyprus with the original keeper. The panel gaps all appear to align as they should, and we didn't notice any dings or dents to highlight.

We've detailed our observations through high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a thorough view of what’s on offer and to assess the car’s condition for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork, finished in "Basalt Black", is in good condition. Some paint has been applied to the front bumper to rectify some inevitable age related stone chips. Other than that, there are a few marks in places, notably a scratch on the offside rear wing and another on the nearside of the rear bumper, these are made more noticeable by being black, but could be reduced or removed with a machine polish.

Images are taken from various angles to show off the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good order, with no noticeable or excessive scratches, and the seals all appear to be in good condition.

The fabric roof is also free from damage and operates correctly throughout its full cycle when lowered or raised.

Interior

Black on black with the occasional highlight of silver, it's the perfect look for the Carrera 4S.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather electric and heated seats are in very good condition, with no excessive bolster wear. The rear seats are also in good order, with just a couple of small indentations where something has been placed on them. Often, a gentle application of heat with a hairdryer can reduce this. The carpets throughout the cabin and into the boot are in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no signs of damage or scuffs. The instruments are functioning correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of approximately ~73,271 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original multifunction leather steering wheel has some light age related shining on the rim, and there is a small amount of wear on the silver Tiptronic button on the left.

The aluminium and leather automatic gear selector is in good order and hasn’t suffered from excessive scratches typically caused by rings.

Mechanics

3.8-litres of German engineering, which has only covered around ~10,000 miles since the rebuild.

Engine and Gearbox

Approximately ~10,000 miles ago, the engine suffered from the infamous bore scoring issue on cylinder six. This resulted in a full engine rebuild by Dal Jones Automotive, Porsche engine specialists, a cost of ~£9,500. The engine now fires up without hesitation or any smoke during our visit.

The Tiptronic gearbox changes smoothly with no issues, and the 911 pulls strongly through the range. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the car handles as you would expect, with no knocks or bangs from the suspension.

Drilled discs, standard on each corner, bring the 911 to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Driving the Carrera 4S is a wonderful experience, especially with the roof down and the switchable exhaust button pressed! The wide rear enhances the look over a standard 997, making the Carrera 4S stand out on the road.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears in good condition, with little signs of wear other than the Tiptronic control on the steering wheel.

The Porsche features the Bose upgrade and satellite navigation, Barry told us everything is working as expected, as far as he is aware.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~5 year ownership, this car has had the infamous bore score issue rectified with a full engine rebuild at a cost of ~£9,500.

Alongside several invoices for maintenance/repairs carried out, the original folder, owner handbooks, a service booklet showing multiple stamps, and two additional invoices for brake fluid changes are included. Two keys complete the owner’s package.

This is an excellent opportunity to take over ownership of a well-presented and well-maintained Carrera 4S Convertible, not to mention it had an engine rebuild around ~10,000 miles ago at a cost of ~£9,500.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail—this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time—we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car—just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
