Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Quality engineering, iconic styling and fantastic performance – when it comes to automotive greatness, Porsche is often unrivalled.

The second-gen Boxster, the type 987, debuted at the 2005 Paris Motor Show showcasing a more powerful engine and a body style inspired by the Carrera GT. With a revised exterior including headlights, larger side intakes, enlarged wheel arches as well as interior revisions, it was a big jump forward for the model. Engine output increased in 2007, when Boxster models received the engines from their corresponding Cayman variants. In 2009, the Boxster models received several additional cosmetic and mechanical upgrades, further increasing engine output and performance.

This Boxster comes to market from ~7 years of ownership with one former keeper and a recent MOT showing no advisories, valid until April 2024. It is in great condition, timeless colours of "Guards Red" over black, and with a low mileage of ~12,777 makes it quite the catch we think.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A car I'd always wanted, and a bit of a retirement present to myself, it's been a lot of fun.

This car has been in the ownership of John for ~7 years, a former chartered engineer for Jaguar, and he's covered ~7,000 miles in that time. The Porsche Boxster was high on the list of cars to own, something more modern than some of the classics he's owned in the recent past. Last serviced ~1,000 miles ago, the car has just been in for an air-con re-gas to ensure it's blowing cold, it hasn't needed too much more and clearly from the underside hasn't seen much if any bad weather days.

Coming to market with one former keeper and a low mileage on it, the Boxster simply isn't getting enough usage from it, "I have some other cars that get much more use than this one more recently, despite loving the car, I think its time to free up some more space and let someone else enjoy it as I have done". John will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in the timeless Porsche colour of Guards Red, the Boxster looks stunning and really stands out amongst the pack.

Wheels and Tyres

The Boxster is equipped with 17" 5-spokewheels which showed very well, it was difficult to note any concerns or marks on the wheel sections which was great to see.

The wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres, showing a spec of 205/55 to the front and 235/50 to the rear. The front and rear tyres show a date code of 2009 and are likely original tyres, they look in good condition with no advisories on the latest MOT. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Porsche and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors and both boot sections open and close well, exactly as you would expect from Porsche build quality.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a striking coat of "Guards Red" (Paint code L84A) the exterior of the car really stands out nicely. The paint has an excellent lustre and finish to it, even in colour across all the panels and in keeping with the low mileage. There were a few stone chips noted on the front bumper sections in line with mileage, and some swirl marks that come with age, nothing major to note. A small repair was actioned to the underside of the front bumper, where it met a high spot on a lane when turning around.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Top tinted windscreen, side windows, rear perspex section, mirrors and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. Door cards showed nicely and gave a great impression looking around the Boxster. The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The exterior photo section also shows the cabriolet hood in good condition with no tears or rips although a few slight marks were observed. The current owner mentions the he'd not cleaned the hood before, so a good clean over may remove the couple of the light marks you see.

Interior

With a driver focused cabin, in a smart all black interior, both driver and passenger will feel snug in this mid-engined roadster.

Seats and Carpets

The adjustable heated sports seats are finished in black leather surrounds with fabric inners, and make the cabin a very comfortable place to be. We did note some signs of wear to the drivers bolster section as pictured, but overall the seats look and feel really smart.

Carpet sections look good through the car and underneath the mats, look like they've barely had any use. The mat sections could do with a good clean through and a little attention to bring them up to a great standard but this is an easy piece of work to undertake. Equally in the front and rear boot sections, the carpeted areas look to be in good shape.

Dashboard

The black dashboard appears in great shape with no cracks or scratches to report. Mileage counter showed with ~12,777 miles at the time of our visit. The display area of the dials and gauges show well and without concern with the triple gauge setup looking very smart. All dials are functional, showing clearly with no obvious scratching to the facings across the drivers section.

We noted that no warning lights were displayed on the dash when the engine was running. The centre console has some areas to note, mainly by the seat buckle area on the drivers side as pictured. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Porsche dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Porsche branded steering wheel looks great in its appearance with very little wear to this looking over the surround. The setup is simple and designed to keep the driver focused on the task ahead of them.

The 6 speed gearstick showed really nicely on its aluminium finished cap without major scratching or marking that we sometimes see on these models. The leather gaiter surround also showed really nicely with no rips or tears here and was nicely finished with its contrasting white stitching.

Mechanics

The Boxster delivers an impressive ~245BHP from its 2.9L flat-six and paired with a six-speed manual transmission, this is a real drivers car.

Engine and Gearbox

We noted no issues on the start up of the car with the engine and exhaust running smoothly when we visited. As to be expected from a car of this low mileage and quality, the engine produced some lovely sounds when out on the road driving very well and providing powerful performance on the journey out.

Take a look at the car and engine section which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the mechanical review video. We take the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Porsche, taking it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, John took us around some local roads, the large drilled discs felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues.

We cover off the underside of the Boxster's exterior in our "Mechanical" gallery section, take a good look at these images, the condition of the underside shows in remarkable condition and in line with the low miles covered. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

The Drive

As you'd expect from Porsche, the drive is one of the biggest selling points with sublime handling, steering and agile performance. We noted no pull from the steering, juddering or unwanted movements with the car feeling well balanced on the road.

It also offers a reasonable amount of space if you know how to pack wisely, with two luggage spaces due to the mid-engine layout, you can fit more than you'd expect in a 2 seater roadster offering a healthy balance of performance and practicality. As one of the most desirable roadsters on the market, the Boxster ticks more than enough boxes to keep a driver happy.

Electrics and Other

The Porsche is included with a tyre repair kit including a tyre inflator, wheel locking nut and small tool kit. The air con in the Porsche has been re-gassed in April this year and was functioning nicely out on our drive.

Multimedia system, bluetooth integration and park assist is also included in the vehicle spec. The glovebox and cup holders functioned as to be expected. Also included is the kit bag to house the perspex wind deflector that sits in between the rear headrest sections. The equipment also includes a 12V socket in the passenger footwell and storage box on engine cover.

History and Paperwork

Coming from ~7 years ownership, this one previous owner 987.2 Boxster boasts low mileage, and presents in great condition in Guards Red.

It's apparent the Porsche has been well looked after over its ownership judging by the condition it stands in, and particularly the underside of the vehicle. Servicing and maintenance has been carried out by a mix of Porsche and other specialists over its life, with the last service actioned ~1,000 miles ago in December 2019 actioning a full vehicle check, oil filter and oil change. In May 2016 the bar had intermediate maintenance and drive belt check was covered off at Porsche Solihull before it was purchased by John.

Should there be any questions required, John would be happy to answer these in the section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
