Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Graceful, imposing and unmistakably British, the Silver Shadow remains one of Rolls-Royce's defining motor cars.

Introduced during an era when Rolls-Royce was synonymous with uncompromising luxury, the Silver Shadow represented the culmination of nearly two decades of development for one of the marque's most successful models.

First revealed in 1965, the Silver Shadow marked a significant departure from previous Rolls-Royce saloons, bringing with it a modern monocoque construction, advanced self-levelling suspension and improved road manners while retaining the effortless refinement for which the brand had become renowned.

By 1980, the Silver Shadow had evolved into a highly refined grand touring saloon, offering a unique blend of traditional British craftsmanship and contemporary engineering. Beneath its stately lines sat Rolls-Royce's renowned 6.75-litre V8 engine, delivering smooth and near-silent performance that perfectly suited the car's luxurious character.

The iconic Pantheon grille, Spirit of Ecstasy mascot and imposing proportions ensures the Rolls-Royce has unmistakable presence on the road. Coming from one former keeper, over ~29 years of ownership and garage storage, this example has travelled very few miles over the last 20 years and is well worth a closer look.

The cabin area, enveloped in rich leather, polished wood veneers and handcrafted detailing - is where this car really stands out. The interior on this model is meticulously cared for and presents exceptionally well.

More than four decades later, the Silver Shadow II remains one of the most recognisable and accessible classic Rolls-Royces. Celebrated for its dignified styling, exceptional ride quality and enduring sense of occasion, it continues to embody the traditional values that defined the marque at the height of its prestige and it's one of those cars, 'you just have to see'.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Arvind the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Few cars embody elegance and prestige quite like a Rolls-Royce, making it one of my all-time favourites.

We met with the current owner Arvind, who told us more about his Silver Shadow and his experience with the car. Having purchased it somewhat on a whim, he was drawn to the appeal of older cars and classic motoring, and quickly found the Rolls-Royce to be one of the most enjoyable cars he has ever owned. "I've always liked older cars, especially classics such as this. I bought the car as I really loved it, and it's turned out to be one of the loveliest cars I've ever driven".

During his ownership, Arvind has found the Silver Shadow to be reliable and effortless to use, appreciating the quality of its hand-built construction and the way it continues to perform today. "Everything works exactly as it should and I've never had any problems with it. Because of its hand built craftsmanship, I think this has really contributed to its longevity".

The car has been used sparingly, covering only minimal mileage each year, and has spent much of its time carefully stored. "It's very simple to drive and just glides along. Most of the time it's been kept in the garage under a cover when not in use."

Particular praise is reserved for the comfort and refinement on offer. "The interior is like travelling in business class, while the engine is incredibly powerful and moves the car along surprisingly well given its size."

Having greatly enjoyed his time with the Rolls-Royce, he now feels the time is right to move on to something a little smaller. "I'll be very sad to see it go. As I'm getting older, I'm looking to downsize and move into a smaller car, but it's been a wonderful thing to own".

Arvind will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Silver Shadow embodies classic Rolls-Royce motoring, pairing timeless styling with handcrafted luxury and its unmistakable grille.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is equipped with 15" Rolls-Royce chrome capped wheels complimented with contrasting blue centres. These are all in great condition, and present really well.

The front and rear of the Silver Shadow is fitted with Michelin tyres with a spec of 235/70. Tyres to three of the four corners feature a cream sidewall, although the front drivers side tyre differs in finish.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

This Rolls-Royce overall, is a stunning example, the car sits level, with shut lines and panel gaps looking great, and no visible panel distortion was observed.

Both sets of doors, the boot, and the bonnet open and close smoothly, in line with the expected quality of this vehicle.

Regarding the exterior bodywork, we found no major concerns, although did note a slight mark to the drivers side wheel arch and a minor parking ding to the drivers side door.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Smartly presented in 'Exeter Blue' - the paint coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour.

We noted a few areas worthy of mention with the paintwork. Getting up close to the car, we observed several areas of paint splitting to the panels, most notably to the passenger side front edge, drivers side windscreen base and rear quarter panels.

Being a little picky, there were various marks to the finish around the body, an area where the paint had been touched in on the leading edge of drivers side rear door, and a small chip next to the rear light and also on the rear passenger door edge. These observations weren't too concerning given the rest of the condition and the age of the vehicle.

The hand-painted coachline extends along the car's flanks, neatly finishing the exterior and reinforcing the marque's traditional attention to detail.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The front and rear windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in excellent condition, and we could see no concerning scratching or chips on the glass.

Badges and emblems are present, correct and look very smart, especially the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot above the front grille. Chrome work looked brilliant overall, maintaining its shine very well, although a minor mark was noted to the driver side rear tail light chrome surround.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The interior cabin trim and finish showed exceptionally well, appearing meticulously cared for and provided a great sense of luxury. Headlining to the interior here also showed without any concerns.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our review videos, please take the time to look over these and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

With its sumptuous materials, intricate woodwork and handcrafted finish, the Silver Shadow delivers a truly classic Rolls-Royce experience.

Seats and Carpets

The very smartly set light grey leather seats are in beautiful condition overall, showing minimal creases to the finish. There was a very small note of wear to the drivers side seat bolster edge. No other concerns were noted here though, and the interior displayed a lovely level of presentation throughout. As expected, the rear seating reflected the same level of great standard.

Over-mats are included both in the front and rear, and are in great condition. When we looked underneath the contrasting blue mats, the base deep-pile wool carpet also reflected the same condition. On the drivers footwell, there was a minor note of wear to the base floor carpeting.

Rolls-Royce's attention to detail and premium quality is evident throughout the cabin, where the cream piping edge detailing to the blue carpets was a real highlight. We also examined the boot section, which was well-maintained, clean, and tidy.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

All sections of the cabin facing walnut trim and fascia present beautifully in the Silver Shadow. The dash area all appears in excellent condition with no issues to report.

The top section of the dashboard, finished in black, presents very well, free from notable splits, cracking or warping. Materials through the cabin feel premium in quality and have been well maintained, enhancing the interior's overall presentation. The odometer displayed ~19,795 miles at the time of our visit.

All dials, switches and controls appear well presented, showing no signs of fogging or scratching to their surfaces. No concerns were noted here.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Rolls-Royce features a slimline 2-spoke steering wheel finished in black leather, which presents very well and complements the cabin's elegant design. The finish is in excellent condition; in line with the rest of the car.

The column-changer auto shifter is located behind the main wheel and also shows to be in great condition. Truly, a remarkable place to be to take on the road ahead in style and comfort.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

The Silver Shadow’s V8 engine provides smooth, unhurried performance, perfectly suited to its luxurious character.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting the car during our visit showed no issues. The Silver Shadow ran smoothly from start-up, with its engine running nicely, functioning well, and effortlessly handling its tasks. We had no concerns about its capabilities during our visit or when driving.

We had the opportunity to take the car out on local roads alongside the current owner, to fully experience this vehicle. During the drive, we observed the car working through the automatic gearing without issue and gained insights from Arvind's perspective on the car's performance.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive in the Rolls-Royce, we heard no knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, just the creak of the seat leathers in the cabin as the car handled the bumps in the road with ease.

Overall, the car performed as expected with no observed issues and provided an exceptional ride out. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no issues.

The brakes felt solid, with no noticeable pull or vibrations during the journey, bringing the car to a stop smoothly and in line with our expectations. On our visit, the car performed as to be expected with no concerns.

As you'll see in the video, the Brake Pressure and Brake Fluid light is on.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

With its stylish design and premium engineering, the Rolls-Royce is the kind of car that truly stands out in a crowd thanks to its rich heritage and luxury appeal.

This beautiful machine is a real rarity on our roads today thanks to its prestige, high end quality and bespoke specifications.

With its elegance and power, the Silver Shadow embodies sophistication whilst having enough grunt under the bonnet to deliver strong performance.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

The Rolls-Royce is modestly spec'd given the car is more focused on driving luxury and comfort on the road. Features include period tasteful extras such as a cassette stereo player and accompanying tape deck storage in the centre section. The car benefits from an air conditioning and cabin temperature control system.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Arvind told us everything was in working order as far as he was aware.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
