Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A luxurious, super-comfortable classic, this modernised design now holding its own.

The Silver Spirit is the development of the ground-breaking Silver Shadow. Like the Silver Shadow, the Silver Spirit had a long and illustrious production career, lasting for 18 years until 1998. Engine and suspension upgrades occurred throughout that time, but they all mirrored the brand's selling pitch of superior construction and craftsmanship. The Silver Spirit II, which debuted in 1989, benefited from the installation of fuel injection and active ride technology, which, combined with digital cabin upgrades, nonetheless managed to unite the interior's ambience and steely dignity.

This stunning 1990 "Graphite Grey" car with "Silverstone" hide, has covered just ~37,633 miles in its lifetime, with a documented ~4,000 of those in the last 23 years. It has a good service history and evidence of almost £6,000 worth of mechanical maintenance in the last three years. Beautifully finished both inside and out, the presentation of the car is close to perfect and could be the best opportunity for those looking for a solid, well cared for low mileage example of the last of the true luxury saloons from the marque.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Clement the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It has low mileage and was in fantastic shape, so I couldn't pass it up.

Clement is a fan of refined and smooth powerful luxury cars and was persuaded by an online review by a classic car magazine of this very car. He took on the car earlier this year and has used it as an evening and weekend treat, revelling in its luxurious charms and sheer road impact. A number of circumstances, including the lack of indoor storage, have forced him to sell the car, needless to say with great regret.

He'll be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Imposing and elegant, the Silver Spirit is an appreciating asset.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheel embellishments are in excellent shape with very little in terms of wear. The missing centre caps for the back wheels will be added to the car's wheels in time for the transfer of ownership.

The Avon tyres are likely to be over 10 years old and show some signs of age but still retain a legal amount of tread. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The structure of the car has no outstanding issues that will need any attention. There are minor signs of age noted on some of the underside, with very light blemishes noted on the inner lips of the lower arches but overall in a reassuring solid state. Externally the car is free from any forms of dent damage. There are no significant issues in terms of external corrosion to be seen, other than a little patch spotted underneath the boot lock. All of the doors open and close with a reassuring action. The panel fit is as close to factory as you can hope for, with even gaps throughout.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The distinctive "Graphite Grey" paint is in excellent condition and goes some way to modernise the presentation of the car. There are no notable issues in terms of the blemishes on the paint finish, the lustre is even with no flat spots or major swirling, other than minor road chips noted up front.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome work has lasted well, with no significant issues in terms of age. The dark grey Everflex roof is in good shape, with no suggestions of rips or wear. The glass is free of any damage, with no cracks on the lights or lenses. The front passenger glass window motor is a little lazy but will be resolved by the time the car is sold. The bumpers are in good shape and are well placed on the car.

Interior

The cabin is virtually immaculate and has maintained its exquisite, elegant decadence.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is lavishly finished with "Silverstone" hide upholstery, piped in slate with grey Wilton carpets and dark grey lambswool rugs. All are in excellent condition, with only the slightest evidence of wear noted on the driver's seat cushion.

The door cards are in very good shape, with minor marks noted in the driver's side pocket. The headlining is in excellent condition. The boot shows very little in terms of use and like the cabin, is completely dry. Almost as important is the lack of cigar aroma too!

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent shape throughout, with very little in terms of wear. All of the controls, dials and switches are said to function, with the air-con blowing cold. The car is fitted with a period 10 CD changer Kenwood system, it is functional but the owner has pointed out a poor radio reception.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good shape, with minor signs of wear, but nothing to upset the remarkably positive general condition of the interior. The column gear lever is in very good order.

Mechanics

Fuel injection and civilised road manners make it surprisingly practical for daily driving.

Engine and Gearbox

The Rolls-Royce L series V8 starts up immediately with no fuss at all, the engine running like a sewing machine with no rattles. There was no smoke from the exhaust, with all of the dashboard lights remaining in check. There was no evidence of fluid leaks and the car was left to run in hot weather with absolutely no impediment to the engine temperature or oil pressure.

The engine's presentation is very positive, with no immediate suggestion of age noted. The automatic gearbox operates with no issues, with a responsive kickdown. Watch the video review to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The smooth ride is one of the key factors behind the allure of a Rolls Ryce, and this example does not disappoint. No knock, thuds or squeaks were heard, with both the steering and braking dealing with the car's heft and pace with no issues at all. Some of the suspension components show age-related blemishes.

The Drive

A short drive along the country roads of Essex proved to be as regal and cosseted as hoped. The car accelerates smoothly, as the speed approaches 40MPH, any signs of engine noise are almost inaudible. The car literally glides through the roads but is surprisingly composed around the gentle corners with no evidence of mechanical noises noted.

It absorbed the ruts and bumps, with no ill effect on the steering and the braking is consistently true with no pulling to the sides. The belief that it is a car to be driven in rather than drive is a little unfair, as the urge and pull of the silky V8 is immensely satisfying and really deserves a lot more credit than being just a wedding car.

Electrics and Other

All the sensitive electrical components, including the seat adjustments and the numerous digital display elements of the car, are said to be fully operational to Clements knowledge.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with a recent service and a handful of invoices from specialists in it's more recent past, low mileage and condition to match, this is a cracking Silver Spirit II.

The car is believed to have seen long periods of indoor storage during its lifetime and was recently recommissioned by Silverlady Brentwood. The vehicle is accompanied by a number of receipts, including a P&A Wood used car sale invoice from 1999, which notes that the vehicle was registered with an ageless licence plate and had travelled 33,473 miles up to that point, the plate is part of the sale. It comes with records of servicing, including one carried out at the end of last year. Older invoices include a new fuel pump and more recent work by Silverlady Brentwood, covering fuel remedies, a new battery and a seat ECU repair totalling £2,800. Further recent work includes more ECU replacements and suspension work. The car has an MOT until November 2022.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.
