Introduction

Josh Sharples
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

The Silver Seraph is everything a “Roller” should be - bold, beautiful and incredibly luxurious.

A worthy successor to the Silver Spirit, the Silver Seraph made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998. Beautiful styling, an opulent Connolly leather interior, Burl Walnut trim and BMW’s highly capable M73 engine came together in a breathtakingly luxurious package. V12 power is delivered through a five-speed automatic gearbox and will propel this substantial car to a specified top speed of 140MPH. Hand built in the Rolls Royce factory in Crewe, the Silver Seraph had a base price, when new, of a shade under £156,000.

This is a lovely example. Ceramic coated and finished in beautiful and popular "Peacock Blue" over a magnolia Connolly leather interior, it really does present well. The car has been well looked after with plenty of bills showing diligent and careful ownership – where else can you get luxury of this kind, and now, for a fraction of the original cost.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Brian the owners representative, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have loved driving this car and the ride is second to none – the car floats along with barely any road noise at all.

Brian, Declan’s representative told us “This Silver Seraph was in great condition, and I think this the best colour combination by far”. He goes on to say “The car is exactly as it left the factory, and you can see from the invoices it’s been really well looked after”.

Declan noted “I have a newer Rolls now and this one simply doesn’t get used as much as it should. I’d love a new owner to enjoy it”. Brian and Declan will be happy to answer any questions about the Silver Seraph in the comments section below.

Exterior

A true luxury carriage – the stunning Peacock Blue ceramic coated paintwork must be one of the favourite colour choice for these cars.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” alloy wheels with chrome centre caps and black Rolls-Royce branding appear in great shape with very little sign of age-related wear. The CR227 Tyres look good too with plenty of tread remaining.

View the image gallery and video review to see the wheels and tyres in more detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork presents beautifully – the car stands straight, shut lines appear good. Doors, bonnet and boot all open and close with precision. This is a Rolls-Royce of course, would we really expect anything less!

Paint

Protected by the ceramic coating, the paint looks consistent and even right across the car, shining brilliantly in the sun. There are one or two age related marks, but we really had to search to find them. There is also some minor bubbling below the offside passenger window. Take a look at the images and video to see just how great this car looks.

Glass and Trim

Overall windows, mirrors and lenses looks great. The windscreen has some very minor chips, but these do not appear to be in the drivers’ line of sight. The chrome and badging appear excellent.

Interior

The automotive equivalent of a stately home – Connolly leather, Burl Walnut and deep pile carpets make this a truly opulent cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The magnolia Connolly leather seats look in superb condition with only the drivers seat showing very minor signs of use. There were no rips, splits or indentations in the leather as far as we could see, just what you'd expect given the mileage.

The rear of the car features the all important picnic tables in the back of the front seats, and this car has some hidden treasures as pictured in the foldaway arm rest for the rear seats.

The blue, deep pile carpet presents well and still appears in good condition with the headlining looking superb.

Dashboard

About as close to flawless as it’s possible to get in a 25-year-old car. The Burl Walnut dash presents well with no evidence of cracking, fading or peeling. All the switches, dials and gauges look clear and undamaged.

The top of the dash is wrapped in dark blue leather, it presents in very good condition. Watch the interior video and images to see the detail across the cabin for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Matching the top of the dash, the leather covered, RR branded steering wheel looks great and has substance - exactly what is needed for a conveyance of this stature.

The gear selection on this car is via the column selector, leaving the centre console space for other controls and more luxurious wood trim.

Mechanics

Silky smooth, virtually silent and utterly reassuring - this was the first 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce since the 1939 Phantom III.

Engine and Gearbox

Power comes from BMW’s M73, aluminium alloy V12 engine, delivering ~322BHP to the rear wheels via 5-speed automatic transmission. This is a substantial car and yet the power unit comfortably propels it to a factory specified 140MPH.

On the cold start the car fired up straight away and quickly settled down to a smooth and even idle. Check the video out for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

The term suspension barely seems adequate – this car feels like it’s floating on a cushion of air!

Brian assures us that the suspension and brakes all work exactly as you would expect.

The Drive

The engine and road noise are barely discernible, the engine pulls smoothly and progressively while changes through the automatic gearbox pass unnoticed. The seats are comfortable, and the steering and brakes seemed precise and certain.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, buttons and gauges look in great condition and Brian tells everything works exactly as it should. The car is fitted with an Alpine Radio Cassette player.

History and Paperwork

Luxury doesn’t begin to describe it, Rolls-Royce cars really do look after their passengers, this beautifully presented example could be transporting you.

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Rolls Royce this could be the one. Whether it’s the whisky selection, picnic trays or branded umbrellas in the boot, this car really does have a timeless quality to it. And yet, with its BMW V12 power-plant it’s a thoroughly capable modern, classic.

Presenting in great condition and a fantastic colourway this is a stunningly beautiful car. It’s been well looked after too with a strong service history and invoices for comprehensive works over the last few years. We understand the Speedometer was replace in 2001 with the mileage previously recorded at ~15,500, making the current mileage around ~57,000 calculated.

The private number place C10 LOH will not be sold with the car which will be issued with an age-related registration.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Brian, Apologies as I could not quite make it out from the photos but were the tyres ever replaced? Also do you have any maintenance docs from 20 yrs ago about the speedo change?

Thanks.

Thank you Brian. One final question please: Was the ceramic coating initiated by the current owner? If not do you know when it was done? Thanks again!

I noticed a damp patch of fluid under the rear axle! Please comment. Also you seem to be going through a few batteries!! Is this normal for these vehicles.
