Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A captivating British sports saloon capable of touring long distances comfortably - an exceptional, rare and charming classic you can drive anywhere.

Rover's 14 model was launched in 1934 on a lengthened underslung chassis retaining its predecessor's 1,577cc, six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine. The new frame enabled the adoption of lowline bodies, and attractive 'streamline' versions of both saloon and coupe. Chassis specification included a four-speed gearbox with freewheel, Lockheed brakes, Luvax-Bijur automatic lubrication and electric windscreen wipers.

Built in sports saloon, coupe and open tourer versions, the ~80mph from factory 'Speed Fourteen' came with a tuned engine incorporating "specially streamlined ports and manifolds" and a high compression cylinder head. Apart from its justified claims as a Speed model this open 4-seater was designed for utility and comfortable touring. It is a full 4-seater with ample room for each person and luggage. The Sports Saloon model shown here had a roofline four inches lower than the other models available and has a stylish appearance with its long bonnet and elegant styling of the coachwork.

Having been restored through its life, the 14 shows in a really great way considering its approaching its ~90th birthday. Given its limited paperwork history, the current owner has advised that restoration was carried out during the mid to late '80s where the Rover was resprayed along with work being carried out on the bodywork.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glynn after meeting Jane the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A real classic that feels like a step back in time - the Rover 14 is an incredible piece of motoring history, its practically like owning a museum piece.

Having been part of the family for many years, the Rover has been well loved and respected over its history. Coming to market after ~5 years ownership, the car belonged to Jane's late husband and previously before that, it was Jane's father-in-law's car, so its a vehicle well known to the family, Jane said, "We've loved this car for a long time now but I don't get the time to use it as we once did".

The Rover is ready for its next home and its new owner. A truly classic car well deserved of someone who can cherish it for the future.

Should any questions be required about the 14, Jane would be happy to answer any in the comments section below.

Exterior

The opening windscreen and spacious feel to the cabin area are welcome points on warm Summer days, ideal on longer distance tours and events.

Wheels and Tyres

The Rover 14 is equipped with heritage relative Avon tyres, the sidewalls on these showed well with no apparent signs of cracking or damage to these and with a good level of tread. Given these weren't date coded, it may be a consideration to replace these at a later date with safety in mind.

Multi spoked all black wheels suit the car really well, looking closely there were a few signs of rusting on the wheels which are worth noting.

Overall, the wheels looked solid and finished the exterior of the car off nicely.

Bodywork

The car has had little use of the past few years having been largely stored in the garage.

Most of the car has wooden sections around the framework which showed in great condition and we noted no signs of rot or any unwanted wear on our visit. We noted a little sign of corrosion on the nearside A pillar but, given the age, didn't present a major concern. There was a small patch of surface rust that we saw on the nearside rear section where a section of paint had been taken off, exposing the metalwork underneath.

Looking closer at the inside of the door frames, we did note that offside front check strap section, visible where the door opens to its widest point, had snapped, which would benefit from some attention by the future owner. A similar appearance is present on the nearside rear check strap where some screws are visible from usage.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork around the Rover looks really good. It could just benefit from a good level of detailing to bring it back up to its former glory. It would appear that during the restoration project the car was re-sprayed.

We did note a blemish on the offside front wing where some of the paint had started to lift and bubble which showed on both the inside and outside edges. On the rear offside wing, there were signs of the paint cracking. On the boot section to the rear, there were signs of paint cracking and a few marks around the edge of the boot sill where items have been loaded. To the nearside, the rear wing had a few signs of issue to the paint and the front wing had a few signs of stone chipping to the base section.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, mirrors, headlights and lenses all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass.

The headlights and rear lights are all free from any chips or cracks in the lenses, and the trim sections around the car are in reasonable condition, again showing without issue, which we could see at time of our visit.

The vinyl trimmed roof showed nicely complimenting the all black style of the car. There were some signs of bubbling in the finish on the rear edge sections.

Interior

With its straight forward setup and nostalgic feel, the interior of the Rover 14 is like admiring a museum piece - a truly lovely place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The Rover 14 is complete with front and rear passenger seats and likely original so it does show with wear and tear. The drivers seat has a few signs of tears to the materials although still remains functional and comfortable. The passenger seat shows a similar level of wear to it. It is worth noting that given this is a 1930's car, the vehicle has no seatbelts which is worth bearing in mind for the future owner.

In the rear, the seat section does show with a fair amount of wear, particularly around the arm rest sections. A lovely extra touch is the fold up / down arm rest in the centre section which operates well.

Carpet sections are up to good level of standard in the front having likely been replaced, although do show with some wear and a few sections that have worn through.

The interior feels a great place to be, providing a great sense of nostalgia.

Dashboard

A relatively straight forward setup, the dash area on the Rover 14 is minimalistic in its approach but functional with it. A water gauge, clock, speedometer and fuel gauge are all present and show in a respectable condition, the clock however, wasn't working on our visit.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Rover dashboard, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original black 3 spoke steering wheel showed well given the car is approaching its ~90th birthday. The same respectable condition showed on the four-speed gearstick.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With a 14HP overhead-valve 1.5L engine and four speed gearbox, the Rover 14 ultimately is built for charming classic touring.

Engine and Gearbox

The Rover 14 features a 1,577cc OHV straight-six engine with a four-speed manual transmission. The engine functioned smoothly and sounded good on the road when we took the car out.

The gearbox was functioning well considering the age of the car, we only noted one slight clunk in the gear change but overall, the gears worked really well with the car driving and operating without concern.

Suspension and Brakes

The car is equipped with front and rear semi-elliptic leaf-spring suspension and overall, gave us no concerns in its performance or handling which was a joy to be out on the road in. We noted no knocks, bangs or unwanted noises from the car when out on the road.

The four-wheel drum brakes were able to bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported to come through the pedal and worked as to be expected.

In the mechanical review video, we tested the brakes by performing a safe emergency stop, the brakes activated well and were able to bring the car to a halt without issue.

The Drive

The drive out in the Rover 14 was a great experience with a lovely sense of nostalgia to simpler motoring times when in the car. As to be expected the car doesn't have power steering, however, this wasn't a concern as the steering was easy to use and showed no drift that was noticeable.

Overall, the Rover is very comfortable and pleasing to drive with ample power provided from the engine. We take the 14 out on some local roads to get a better feel for the car. Head over to the on the road video to hear our thoughts on the journey and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

On our test drive out in the car, we noted no issues with the electrical components which Jane confirmed for us also. Given that this car is pre-World War II, the electric functions are minimal. We did note that the clock function on the dash wasn't working on our visit.

On the drive the water pressure valve and speedometer showed to be working along with the side signals when navigating turns and junctions. The Rover also has a spare set of wiper blades, spare distributor cap and a small selection of other spare items included with it.

History and Paperwork

Considering the Rover 14 is approaching its ~90th birthday, its incredible to see this car still driving well on the open roads and without concern.

The Rover has been in the family since 1983 where Jane's late husband's father rescued the car from deterioration and did a full restoration on the car. The car has had its time as a museum piece being held on display at the Pembrokeshire Classic Car museum.

As part of its restoration, it appears as though the car has been re-sprayed where the project was carried out around the mid-late 1980s. However, there is no paperwork included in the car to reflect this. Jane will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
