Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

Majestic, smooth, and powerful, the Rover P5B is considered the last of the true Rovers.

The Rover P5B was a natural fit for state duties, striking a perfect balance between dignity and approachability. As the first Rover to feature David Bache’s unitary bodywork, it paired a sleek, elegant silhouette with a traditionally luxurious cabin.

By the mid-1960s, the P5 had carved out a unique space for itself: it offered high-society respectability without the overbearing arrogance of more 'bespoke' British rivals. However, the true turning point came with the introduction of the Buick-derived 3.5-litre V8. This lightweight aluminium engine transformed the P5 from a sedate saloon into a formidable continental cruiser.

Because the V8 was actually lighter than the outgoing straight-six, it delivered a significant boost in power without the typical penalty at the fuel pump.

A favourite amongst high-ranking ministers, royalty, and those who appreciated robust engineering, the P5B was offered in two body styles - including the rare and distinctive four-door coupé. However, the V8's reliability and excellent parts availability, on top of an active owners' club, means that the P5B doesn't need a minister's salary to maintain.

First registered in November 1967, this P5B Coupé is finished in 'Zircon Blue' over a beige leather interior. It comes to market after almost three years with our vendor and has a remarkably low ~46,540 miles - believed to be original. Remarkably, the car has had only four owners from new. Its provenance is backed by over £12,000 in invoices, a recent service, and an MOT valid until June 2027.

Whilst the car is mechanically solid and well-maintained, it does require some light cosmetic attention to bring it to its full potential. Most notably, this example is believed to be the seventh P5B Coupé to leave the production line, earning it the distinction of being the oldest surviving Coupé on the road today.

The sale includes its Heritage Certificate, two car covers, the original owner’s booklets, and two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Dennis the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have a deep and long-lasting fondness for the P5B Rover: it's one of the most comfortable and smoothest cars I’ve ever driven.

Dennis worked in the motor trade and drove hundreds of cars over an enjoyable career, but the Rover P5 was the car that resonated with him the most. He specifically sought a 'Zircon Blue' coupe and found his perfect car, with the considerable bonus of low documented mileage.

Bought three years ago, he used the car to attend shows and meets. A medical issue, followed by a recent lack of use, are the regrettable reasons for the sale. He hopes it will end up in the hands of a genuine enthusiast who will appreciate it as much as he has.

Dennis will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Cleanly presented and solid, the car needs a few cosmetic fixes for the summer show circuit.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" Rostyles present positively, with some signs of age noted.

The wheels are fitted with whitewall Galaxy tyres, with a spec of 185/65, date-coded 2018/19. They’re all in good shape, with even tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Aesthetically, the car presents smartly, boasting visually consistent shut lines and a precise panel fit. The doors still operate with a reassuring "clunk," though there is a dent on the lower corner of the offside rear wing.

There are some localised cosmetic issues to address. The lower front wings show signs of superficial damage, along with some visible corrosion at the base of both wings and the bottom and inner panels of the rear passenger doors. Additionally, minor bubbling is starting to appear on both rear wheel arches and at the base of the rear screen.

The vehicle’s structure remains impressive, with the chassis rails, floor pan, boot floor, and engine bay all described as solid. While the sill lips and jacking points show minor surface rust, and the lower wheel wells (particularly on the offside sill ends) show some age-related wear, the foundations are strong.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The striking combination of 'Zircon Blue' with a 'Silver Birch' roof - accentuated by hand-finished coachlines - perfectly complements the car's handsome proportions. The paintwork retains a consistent hue and a respectable lustre.

While the overall presentation is strong, there are a few surface imperfections to note, primarily toward the rear. These include some paint reaction bubbling on the rear wings and areas of "orange peel" texture. Additionally, the nose shows minor cracking and a few small stone chips, while slight paint peeling is evident on the boot lid and the base of the nearside C-pillar.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape, and the rear glass seal shows signs of age but doesn’t appear to leak. The lights and lenses are smart, with some perishing on some of the light seals.

The boot finisher trim shows mild signs of age, but otherwise, the chrome trim is in very good order and well-mounted on the car. The bumpers are believed to be stainless steel.

image

Interior

The interior has been looked after and comes with a few useful modern upgrades.

Seats and Carpets

The beige leather seats are in good shape, with mild age-related crease marks on the driver's side.

The carpets and mats are tidy and are all free of dampness.

image

Dashboard

The black padding, centre console, and wood finishing are in good shape, with only the hand tool kit/sliding picnic shelf showing any significant wear. The binnacle is in good shape, with decent dials showing minor signs of age on the bezels. The controls and switchgear are above the expectations of a car of this age. All are said to work as they should.

Some of the door-mounted wood capping shows signs of age, but it's mostly lacquer wear. The headlining might benefit from a clean, but the rest of the interior trim is decent.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in line with the car's age, showing no significant damage.

image

Mechanics

To suggest it cruises as sumptuously as a Rolls-Royce wouldn't be far from the truth.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up without any hesitation, free of unwanted noises or rumbles. All of the dashboard warning lights remained off during our visit. The exhaust is free of any unwanted fumes, and the engine idles smoothly when cold. We didn't note any fluid leaks on the day.

The engine is cleanly presented, with evidence of maintenance, showing decent hoses and ancillaries. A stainless steel exhaust and electric fuel pump were fitted in 2025.

The automatic gearbox was proven to operate effectively, with smooth transitions and no slippage or jerkiness. The gearbox was rebuilt in 2018.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides beautifully along the urban roads, soaking up the surface with no unwanted thuds or noises. There was a little squeaking, but this may be down to the interior trim, rather than mechanical issues. Rear spring hanger bushes have recently been fitted.

The car brakes effectively, free of squeals or judders. The steering wheel remained true as Dennis slowed the car down.

image

The Drive

Renowned for its refined ride, the P5 historically served as the preferred transport for government officials - and it hasn’t lost its touch. Even approaching its 60th year, the car remains remarkably composed, offering a near-silent cabin and an impressive level of ride.

Performance is equally steady: the engine pulls evenly without hesitation or mechanical drama. According to Dennis, the car has been meticulously maintained, with a trusted mechanic promptly resolving any minor running issues as they arose.

The steering tracks well, with no noises or vibrations and retains a good feedback of the road, and the car's luxurious ride isn’t upset by cornering. We kept the speeds low, but Dennis has told us that it drives very nicely at motorway speeds. A car to cruise in rather than hurl around, the proven and trusted Buick V8 engine has been reliable in Dennis’ company. He has not reported any issues with the car's cooling or oil pressure.

image

Electrics and Other

The previous owner installed front heated seat controls, a keyless locking fuel cap, a digital radio and a windscreen-mounted dashcam. All will be part of the sale.

Whilst the rear heater motor fan is working, it currently only blows cold because the hot/cold switchover valve has seized.

While we didn't test all electrics on the day, Dennis assured us everything else was working to his knowledge.

Dennis has also included a bespoke P5B soft-fitted fleece indoor car cover and a separate breathable outdoor car cover, along with a Thatcham-approved Disklok steering wheel lock.

History and Paperwork

The car has had just 4 previous owners, with over £12k worth of invoices since 2009.

First registered by Hughes, the Rover distributor in Bournemouth, in November 1967, the car comes with DVLA documentation showing its previous 4 owners. Prior to Dennis buying the car in 2023, it had spent around 15 years in Germany, where it received regular maintenance and upkeep, with over 6,000 Euros spent on the car during its time there. This included engine and transmission rebuilds, servicing, body and trim renovation, and work for the strict annual TUV inspection.

The car was brought back to the UK, with further invoices showing almost £7,000 spent on a gearbox rebuild, engine overhaul, carb refurb, brake work, stainless steel exhaust, electric fuel pump, and installation of a high-efficiency radiator. The car was also serviced in 2025.

It comes with its handbook, two keys, and its Heritage certificate. It is road tax and MOT exempt. Dennis has taken the sensible precaution of placing an MOT on the car, which lasts until June 2027.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
