Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A well-regarded British classic, admired for its innovation, character, and V8 charm.

The Rover P6 3500 is a classic British executive saloon from the later years of the P6 range, produced under British Leyland. As the V8-powered flagship, it combined understated styling with strong performance and was part of the updated Series II generation, featuring subtle design tweaks and a more modern interior.

Powered by a 3.5-litre aluminium V8 engine, the 3500 delivers smooth performance and, of course, sounds lovely, being a V8.

Coming to market from just under a year and a half with our vendor, this beautiful 1975 example is in superb condition, having been restored around three years ago. Now up for the taking, the P6 is perfect for anyone wanting to own a British classic capable of turning heads wherever it goes, on the road or show field.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A nostalgic trip down memory lane led to buying the P6.

John purchased the P6 after reminiscing about his dad buying one new in the early '70s.

After some searching, John came across this stunning, low-mileage 1975 P6 3500, which has had an exterior restoration to a superb standard and looks absolutely stunning.

John has enjoyed the car for a year and a half now, and, with a view to downsizing, the P6 is being parted with.

John will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

An automotive equivalent of a Savile Row suit paired with a jet engine.

Wheels and Tyres

The original steel wheels are finished in black, with original Rover hubcaps fitted, which are all in very good condition.

There is a matching set of Goodyear Eagle Ventura tyres fitted, which are in very good visual condition.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Looking around the Rover’s bodywork, the condition is excellent.

No dings or dents were spotted, and all of the panels appear level and match, with visually even gaps.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in the original colour of 'Scarab Blue', the paintwork presents exceptionally well, with no issues to mention - this is paintwork to be proud of.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows are in excellent condition, with no noticeable scratches.

All of the window seals appear to be in good order, and the chrome trim surrounds have a bright finish.

The bright finish extends to the bumpers, which are in superb condition, with no tarnish. The front and rear light lenses are all free from damage and discolouration.

image

Interior

Possibly the finest executive luxury the '70s had to offer.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in Buckskin leather, the seats are in excellent condition and show very few signs of age in the front or rear, considering they are 50 years old.

All four door cards are also in good order, with no damage to them.

Being picky. there are a couple of minor splits in the wooden trim, but these are minimal.

The carpets throughout are in excellent condition, with no real signs of age or wear.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard in the P6 is in excellent condition, with no splits or cracks to show its age.

All of the instruments present well and are working as they should. The odometer shows a reading of just ~38,323 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Spec’d from new with a leather steering wheel, this has stood the test of time, showing minimal patina.

The gear lever is also in good order, with no signs of excessive use.

image

Mechanics

Derived from a Buick design, the aluminium V8 has become a legendary engine.

Engine and Gearbox

With a turn of the key, the V8 fires into life… fuel fed in via the two SU carburettors, the faint V8 burble sounds fantastic as it settles into a smooth idle.

The P6 runs with no problems or issues reported by John.

Fitted with a three-speed automatic gearbox, the change is slick, with no juddering, and the V8 pulls well as you accelerate.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, it's easy to see why the P6 was suited to the executive market. The De Dion rear suspension setup helps immensely with a smooth ride, and no knocks or bangs were heard coming from either corner.

The brakes bring the large saloon to a stop with a solid pedal feel and in a straight line.

image

The Drive

Driving a Rover P6 3500 is a distinctly refined and characterful experience, blending smooth V8 performance with a relaxed, almost stately ride.

The Buick-derived 3.5-litre engine delivers effortless torque, making progress feel unhurried yet confident, while the automatic gearbox suits the car’s laid-back nature perfectly.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the P6 is all working as Rover intended, with no issues reported by John, he did tell us during the on the road video the clock was stopped but this was due to him shutting it off to save running down the battery when stood and he forgot switch it back on, but it does work.

In the paperwork, there is a mention that the period head unit can connect to an iPod, possibly via a cable, but John has never looked into this further, as he prefers the sound of the V8.

History and Paperwork

An extensive history file dates back to the original bill of sale!

Looking through the history file for the P6, the collection of invoices and correspondence dates back to 1975, when the car was ordered new. There are several handwritten service invoices along with the original owner's manual and service booklet.

Also included with the sale are a few parts which John has accumulated since his ownership. Another nice selling point to mention is that the Rover has been through an MOT, valid until 30.03.2027, and passed with no advisories.

A classic British saloon that prioritises plenty of comfort, understated performance and bucket loads of charm.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off or does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
