Introduction

Josh Sharples
Professional Consigner

The iconic Mini Cooper - the road-legal go-kart that brings smiles with every drive.

Thanks to the Suez Crisis, fuel prices in 1960s Britain were soaring, so Sir Leonard Lord of the Morris Company issued his top engineer the challenge of designing and building a small, fuel efficient car capable of carrying four adults within economic reach of everyone. Along birthed the Mini Cooper in 1961. The car was a huge success, 5.4 million Mini's were bought over its 41 years of production life, and still remains the best-selling British car of all time. Fast forward 33 years, and this particular example was made. The 1.3L engine provides a reported ~62BHP, which carries enough kick to send you around country roads, and as the saying goes, guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face.

This car comes to market from ~3 year ownership. It's a cracking example finished in "British Racing Green" with black half leather seats, this Mini Cooper has seen restoration in the current ownership so it's not suffering under the headlights and on the sills as typically seen. More recently it has been garaged and SORN this past year, the lack of more recent use prompting the sale.

This listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Nostalgia was the main driving force for acquiring this car - my friends and I all had them when we were younger!

Richard took ownership of the car back in 2020 when he bought it off a friend who had owned the car for several years. Since then it has done roughly ~700 miles, and it has been put on SORN a couple of times for longer term storage. Richard tells us that this past year the car has been garaged, and loved taking out his children in the Mini Cooper on some weekend drives.

He has come to the decision to sell as the vehicle "It isn't enjoyed as much as it should be anymore". Since ownership, Richard has had an exterior restoration actioned. He is more than happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

An iconic and now timeless design, it doesn't get any more distinctive than this - the classic Mini Cooper.

Wheels and Tyres

The 12" alloys appear in great condition, with no visible scuffs noted on our visit and the "Mini Cooper" centre caps in place. Each wheel is wrapped in Yokohama A539 tyres, which looked to have good tread remaining.

We have captured high resolution images of all four wheels, so feel free to browse through these images to see the condition of the wheels for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in great condition on this Mini Cooper, with all panels appearing straight with even looking panel gaps. As mentioned previously, in the current ownership Richard has had an exterior restoration actioned, so the car doesn't suffer from the usual pain points of corrosion under the headlights or on the sills etc.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The choice of "British Racing Green" on this Mini Cooper is a great one, with the metallic properties in the paint giving different character to the car in varying lighting conditions. The condition of the paint is good having been painted as part of the work in the current ownership, with a couple of minor marks spotted on our visit. This particular example has contrasting white mirrors and roof, with white stripes across the bonnet finishing the look.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The condition of the glass on this car appears in great condition, with no visible cracks or chips spotted on our visit to see the car. The trim around the glass also appears in good condition, with very minimal sign of wear spotted on our visit. Please look through the gallery to gain a better understanding of the condition.

Interior

With a combination of both leather and fabric, this example provides a comfortable ride with Cooper flourishes to the interior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have leather surround, with patterned cloth centres, and finished with red piping. The carpets are finished in red, with black mats being used by the current owner to preserve the condition. Both the carpets and the seats appear in good condition, with only a couple age related marks spotted.

Dashboard

A classic and well known dashboard for this era of Mini, it is in line with the age and mileage of the car, free from cracks or major wear.

The dashboard is finished in black, with white gauges to contrast. Richard reports that the gauges, dials and buttons work as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is finished in black leather, with only minimal signs of age-related wear visible. The gear stick is also finished in black, appearing in similar condition. Take a look through the gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

The Mini Cooper proves that you don't need hundreds of horsepower to have fun!

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a feisty 1.3L 4-cylinder engine which is not only practical and reliable, it packs a punch on all road types and is exactly why it is such a big hit among the masses. On the cold start test, the engine started with no issue, and it was more than happy to be put through its paces on the road.

A similar story for the gearbox too, on our short trip the car was happy to be worked through the gears. Watch the "On The Road" video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

One of the most defining aspects of the Mini is its rubber-cone suspension system, which requires very little maintenance. The Cooper's braking system includes discs at the front and drums at the rear.

Richard tells us that the brakes work as expected. Throughout its years of life, this example's brakes and suspension has received the attention if required, it appears looking through the paperwork the suspension had some significant refurbishment in 2013.

The Drive

The car sounded great on start-up, and this although the suspension felt firm, it was comfortable on the short drive. The 1.3L engine sounded great down the Leicestershire country lanes, generating smiles on both myself and Richard's face.

Electrics and Other

Not too much to work through on these simple cars, Richard tells us that all electrics are fully functional and operational to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~3 year ownership, this car has modest mileage and a stamped up service book showing some of its life, with an exterior renovation in the current ownership we think it's a lovely example begging to be enjoyed.

This Mini Cooper has benefitted from an exterior renovation that included a respray. The car has been garaged for the last 12 months, and thanks to the numerous occasions that it has had a SORN, the mileage is relatively low for the age and car. It comes with a service book showing much of its life, and MOT records charting the mileage too.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

The rear of the o/s sill appears to have a weld/patch repair – please can you confirm? And are there any other weld/patch repairs? The 2012 MOT states corrosion to the n/s and o/s of the vehicle structure – is this related?

Please can you confirm:
1. Does the car have vented sills both sides (no oversills)?
2. Any synchro issues on the gearbox?
3. Any idling issues?
4. Any overheating?
5. Any oil leaks?
