Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

So much history and legend can be summarised in three letters, WRX - the Impreza dominated the world rally championships; this is a true rally-car built for the roads.

In the early '80s Subaru decided to expand their global image through motorsports, and their sport of choice was rally. Shortly after signing Colin McRae, Subaru introduced the Impreza in 1992, a shortened version legacy.

With the release of the Impreza, Japan offered a special edition for their home market, a turbocharged variant named, the WRX (aka World Rally Experimental).

This is the first generation Impreza WRX 2000 AWD the 'GC8' - it's fitted with a turbocharged flat-four engine that produced nearly 220bhp, very fast by any standard with a 0-60 speed of 6.6s. Impreza WRX also has an all-wheel-drive system praised for being one of the best in the world, with independent suspension in all corners, this really helps to offer comfort and precision while cornering at speed.

This example has been owned and enjoyed by Roger since 1999, he's dry stored it in his barn since. It's a completely unmolested, unmodified example of the first generation WRX, and with some cosmetic and mechanical attention we know it'll turn heads.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After 22 years of ownership, I'll be sad to see it go, but it needs to be used.

Roger purchased this 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX 2000 AWD Turbo in December of 1999 as a daily driver, the car was originally registered with his local Subaru dealer as a demonstration example. Roger has an extensive history file with paperwork and receipts dating back to the start of his ownership. Roger shared the car with his wife and they both mentioned how they loved taking it out and how it makes trips a joyful experience.

You'll find that everything on the car is completely standard, bar the radio. However, the original Subaru radio is available. The car is SORN and has been dry stored in Rogers barn since 2015, therefore the car does not have a current MOT.

Roger will be more than happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A familiar boxy saloon, completely facelifted with a large hood scoop, rally lights and huge aero wing which sets the WRX apart.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 5-spoke gold alloys, the car's classic and world-known colour scheme - blue and gold. The condition of the wheels is visually good for their age, with minor areas of curbing and corrosion found in small areas.

The tyres look good too - they're Firestone TZ300A's dated 2010/2011, and appear to have a good amount of tread left on them.

Take a look at the media pack for a detailed view of the tyres and gold wheels, a full size spare can also be found in the boot.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the car looks generally good, yet would benefit from some attention in certain areas. All the shut lines and panel gaps look tight and true with no significant signs that would indicate accident damage in the past. Roger mentions that at common area with these cars, the rear turrets, will require attention as part of the recommissioning work.

When getting really close, we noticed that each door has a number of small dings and scratches. The most noticeable area is on the rear nearside door. Roger has attended to the area with touch-up paint, however, it would benefit from some professional attention.

Please take a close look at the condition of the bodywork in the media pack, where we have captured the exterior in great detail.

Paint

Finished in the most desirable (52D) Mica Metallic Blue with gold alloys - the car really looks the part.

The paint looks good and in line with the rest of the exterior - it would benefit from a good mop and polish to remove swirls. The front bonnet and bumper has some very minor stone chips, and there it the very slightest signs of lacquer peel on some minor areas.

Please take a look at the exterior video where we show all areas of the car's paint finish.

Glass and Trim

All presents in great condition, along with the trim on this car.

The headlight lenses look clean and clear, along with the rubber seals around the windows.

Interior

The Japanese design - a simple interior, which puts the driver in full control.

Seats and Carpets

The bucket seats look great in the Impreza and have really held their shape over the years. They grab you and hold you tightly as you plummet round corners. The only thing we noticed was some very slight stains on the seats, which look like they would come out with a deep clean.

The rear seats are in great condition too, with very little signs of use over the years. Genuine Subaru rubber mats are fitted throughout and look in great condition for the age, but require a deep clean. The headlining around the sunroof shade has come loose and would benefit from some adhesive attention.

Please have a look at the photos and videos in the interior media pack to see all in more detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in good condition on this Scoobie - it features only the essential dials, so the driver can solely focus on the road and which direction they're going next.

Roger reports all the dials and clock work as they should, no warning lights appeared on our visit - the dashboard would benefit from a deep clean, in line with the rest of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted from the factory with a stock momo sport steering wheel, comfortable enough for maneuvering on the road, and precise enough for the track.

Both featuring hardwearing leather, which appears in good condition throughout.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the interior of this highly original Impreza WRX.

Mechanics

Turbocharged goodness - a flat-four layout with a 0-60 speed of 6.6s - impressive.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the flat-four turbocharged 2.0L engine that will take you to some incredible speeds at no time at all, no matter what terrain you're on!

The car does require some mechanical attention, ideal for the enthusiast on the search for a highly original Impreza.

Please watch the cold start video, where we captured the car starting the first time from cold. It started straight away, however, was "hunting" - Roger reports the timing belt was last replaced in 2010 at ~65,300.

Suspension and Brakes

The car features an all-wheel-drive system praised for being one of the best in the world, with independent suspension in all corners.

On close inspection of the brakes, we noticed some surface rust on the discs, Roger reports one of the rear brakes is binding. Something a keen mechanic could attend within an afternoon.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the brakes and underneath the car.

The Drive

The Subaru Impreza WRX GC8 was born out of Subaru's dominance in the FIA world rally championship during the 90's. The Impreza was a teenager's bedroom wall poster car and magnet for large modification and police attention, you'll be happy to hear that this example is highly original and untampered with.

The Impreza packs an awful lot of oomph into a small package with a turbocharged engine, stiff suspension, coupling centre, and rear differentials, and most importantly all-wheel drive, a staple for Subaru.

Electrics and Other

Just what you would expect for a '90s Saloon, electric sunroof, radio, and 12v cigarette lighter as standard. The car is stripped from any additional bulky weight-adding electrical features that are non essential.

Roger reports all the electrical features work on the car to his knowledge. The car is fitted with an aftermarket Sony radio, however, the original Subaru head unit is still present. The car is also fitted with a lifetime Tracker.

History and Paperwork

The perfect project and base for a complete restoration - with some cosmetic and mechanical attention this low ownership example will make the ultimate Impreza WRX track, road, or collectors item.

Coming out of ~22 years of ownership and just 1 former keeper (the main Subaru dealer), this WRX from Subaru would make the ultimate project for any enthusiast in the market for a highly original, unmolested example.

Take a look at the history file for a detailed view of the paperwork, receipts and MOT documents over Roger's long ownership.

The car is currently registered as SORN, and will require a fresh MOT to be roadworthy.

Roger mentions that in some of the older documents the car was registered on a private plate, Roger has now changed the car to the age appropriate plate - which will be included within the sale.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.
