Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A true Japanese performance icon, this rare UK-market P1 combines rally-bred engineering, turbocharged power, and unmistakable Impreza styling.

The Subaru Impreza P1 was introduced in 2000 as a limited-edition performance model, developed specifically for the UK market. Created through a collaboration between Subaru Tecnica International (STI) and British motorsport specialists Prodrive, the P1 brought rally-inspired engineering and focused performance to the road. Just 1,000 examples were produced, each built around the two-door Impreza Type R shell and finished in the distinctive Sonic Blue colour.

Under the bonnet sits a turbocharged 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine, producing ~277bhp and sending power to all four wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Prodrive’s involvement extended beyond the engine, with revisions to the suspension, steering, and chassis helping give the P1 its distinctive handling characteristics.

The result was a particularly focused road car, drawing heavily on Subaru’s World Rally Championship success during the era: indeed, Autocar performance-tested one in period and recorded a 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph.

Today, the P1 is regarded as one of the most desirable UK-market Impreza variants, with its limited production run, Prodrive development, and connection to Subaru’s rallying heritage making it a particularly appealing modern classic. Coming from just over 6 years with our vendor, this year 2000 example is number 800 of the 1,000 produced and has covered ~72,000 miles.

It also benefits from a substantial engine rebuild carried out in 2014-16, alongside further supporting maintenance and upgrades during subsequent ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Irshaad the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Wheels and Tyres

This example sits on its original Anthracite Prodrive by OZ 17-inch wheels, with a space saver in the boot. The wheels appear to be in great condition all round.

The tyres fitted are Goodyear Eagle F1s, dated 2018. They appear to be in good visual condition, with a good amount of remaining tread and no visible cracking on the outer sidewalls.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork appears to be in great overall condition, with the panel gaps aligning well around the car.

As to be expected, there are some minor age-related marks to note, including small stone chips to the front of the car. We also noticed a small dent just above the front Subaru badge.

We've provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Every P1 is finished in ‘Sonic Blue Mica' (74F). The paintwork looks to be in good condition, with even colour and coverage across all panels. There are some stone chips and minor marks to the front of the car, as expected for a car of this age. We also noticed a significant area of lacquer peel on the rear P1 spoiler.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paintwork for yourselves.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition for the car’s age. During our visit, we didn’t notice any obvious cracks or discolouration.

The window seals appear to be in good condition and are consistent with the overall presentation of the car.

The door handles and window surrounds also present well.

Interior

A Focused Driver’s Cabin with Classic Impreza Character.

Seats and Carpets

The blue/grey Prodrive Terzo-style contoured Alcantara and Jersey front seats, with matching Jersey and suede-effect rear seats, have retained their shape well over the years.

The dashboard features a classic black Subaru finish, complemented by matching carpets and door cards.

The black/grey door cards and navy/grey carpets present similarly well, showing a consistent level of condition throughout the interior.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look through the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this Subaru Impreza P1 shows no major damage or scuffs during our visit.

The odometer displayed ~72,064 miles at the time of consignment.

A colour-changing, retrofitted turbocharger boost gauge has been added above the steering wheel.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black leather Momo steering wheel was in good condition at the time of our inspection.

The black gear selector also appeared to be in good shape, with both presenting consistently with the overall condition of the car.

Mechanics

A Rebuilt Turbocharged Boxer Engine with Performance-Focused Upgrades.

Engine and Gearbox

At the heart of the Impreza P1 is Subaru’s turbocharged 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine, producing ~277bhp and ~290lb-ft of torque. Its horizontally opposed configuration gives the engine a distinctive character, while the turbocharger delivers the strong performance that helped establish the Impreza as one of the defining Japanese performance cars of its generation.

Power is sent through a five-speed manual gearbox to Subaru’s renowned symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

A particularly notable feature of this example is the extensive engine rebuild carried out in 2014. The work included a new crankshaft, ACL race bearings, new pistons and rings, STI Version 9 connecting rods, ARP head studs, cambelt and tensioner, an uprated oil pump, and a replacement clutch kit. Further supporting invoices document the work, with the engine rebuild and associated work totalling ~£5,119 and ~£2,700 across 2014 and 2016.

The car has also received an EcuTek remap, adding to its enthusiast-focused specification.

Irshaad reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its five-speed manual gearbox sending the power to all the wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting, driving around, and for a closer look underneath this P1.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The Impreza P1 benefited from Prodrive-developed chassis and suspension revisions, helping distinguish it from the standard Impreza Turbo. Its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, carefully developed suspension geometry, and responsive steering give the P1 the sure-footed handling and driver engagement that made these cars so popular.

This example has also been fitted with coilover suspension, documented as having been installed in 2015, allowing for further adjustment to its handling characteristics and stance.

We cover the underside of the Impreza exterior in our “Mechanical” gallery section. Head over to our video section, where we’ve summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

image

The Drive

The Impreza P1 offers an engaging driving experience, combining its turbocharged flat-four engine with a five-speed manual gearbox and Subaru’s renowned all-wheel-drive system. The result is a car that delivers impressive traction and confidence, with the performance and character that made the original Impreza such an important part of Subaru’s rallying story.

With ~277bhp on tap, Prodrive-developed chassis engineering and a number of carefully chosen upgrades, the P1 remains a wonderfully involving performance car. Its compact two-door body and distinctive turbocharged soundtrack add to the appeal, making it every bit the enthusiast-focused modern classic.

Please have a look at the ‘On The Road’ video where Irshaad takes us for a short drive.

image

Electrics and Other

No Impreza would be complete without a subwoofer in the boot, and this example comes well equipped with a Vibe SLR EVO Slick 1050W 10-inch car subwoofer. There is also an Alpine CDE-173BT Bluetooth head unit.

Irshaad reports that everything apart from the air conditioning is functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
