Distinctive, versatile and engaging - a stunning example of the legendary WRX

From the early 90's through to 2008 Subaru enjoyed enormous success on the world rally stage and the Impreza was the star. All wheel drive, great acceleration, traction and brakes made the cars seriously capable performers. The WRX or "World Rally Experimental" production car was based on the rally winning Impreza and carried over many of the driver focused features and systems. Nicknamed the "Hawkeye" after it's front light configuration, the WRX features a 2.5L flat four "Boxer" engine, delivering power to all four wheels through a five speed manual gearbox.

This genuine UK car is something special. As well as being in simply stunning order throughout, it has benefitted from some sensible, performance enhancing upgrades. These include an engine remap and the installation of a VF34 Turbo which help to raise the power output to 362BHP. In the past year the current owner has spent many thousands of pounds on improvements to this car with one of the bills in the paperwork for over £7,000. No expense has been spared and the next owner can enjoy the rally heritage, looks and handling of this iconic performance saloon.

Meet the owner

What a car, my grandad had one back in 1999 in Wales, I still remember the exhilarating ride through the country roads.

Chris has made some serious investment in improving this car having spent well over £7,000. He'd promised to get one after the experience at his grandparents, he found time during the pandemic in 2020 to acquire a well looked after example to build and improve upon.

And Chris has delivered. Working on the aesthetics with new side skirts and splitters, and the addition of an STi spoiler, he also worked on the handling and performance with a new suspension system installed and some choice upgrades to the drivetrain detailed in the listing. Exterior

Muscular, sporting and purposeful - the WRX looks the business, and it delivers too.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with gold Drift Rota 18 inch alloys, they give the car a more purposeful stance and really enhance the appearance, one of the upgrades Chris actioned.

The wheels are in great condition and are shod all round with matching Yokohama tyres. Chris advises that the tyres have covered around 2,000 miles and all have good tread remaining. View the extensive gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

This WRX stands square and even with no obvious signs of accident damage. The shut lines are good and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close cleanly and precisely.

There is a very small crack in the front splitter. Check out the exterior review video to really appreciate the overall condition of this car.

Paint

The iconic World Rally Blue paintwork (Code 02C) is very good all over with colour and shade consistent across the panels.

The car is polished to a deep, even lustre. The scoop on the bonnet appears a very slightly different shade, probably due to being a different material to the main panel. This is, however, barely noticeable

Glass and Trim

Glass, trim and badging appear in excellent order with no apparent scratching, pitting or deterioration.

When Chris bought the car, it was a stock look, he's fitted new side skirts and rear splitter, and also the iconic STi spoiler.

Interior

A real drivers car, the interior gives a sense of the illustrious rallying history, sporting touches like the instrument clusters.

Seats and Carpets

The "Off Black" and light grey interior (Code B20) is in great shape. The seats are supportive, comfortable and in very good condition with few signs of wear. The black carpets are remarkably good with few marks and no visible rips or tears.

Dashboard

The dashboard is clean and free from any obvious flaws. The dials are clear, well positioned and easy to read with the centrally placed tachometer counter contributing to the sporting feel of the overall interior.

Chris confirms that all switches dials and gauges work as they should. The interior has been enhanced by the addition of individual gauges for water temperature, oil pressure and turbo boost.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Steering wheel is in very good condition and is clean and undamaged. The stitched leather gearstick cover is largely free from significant wear.

Mechanics

The turbocharged 2.5 litre boxer engine is dynamic, flexible and responsive, with 4 wheel drive set-up ensures the power can be delivered effectively.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay is clean and everything appears well cared for. As can be seen from the "On The Road" video, the 2.5 litre engine fires easily into life from cold and settles down to a steady idle immediately.

In the last year the engine has benefitted from head skimming and gasket replacement, new water pump, cambelt and auxiliary belts. In addition the engine has been remapped and the VF34 Turbocharger, usually found on the STi "Blobeye", installed. The result is the car pushes out ~362BHP now.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has been fitted with BC Racing adjustable suspension allowing alterations to be made to the firmness and camber. This enables the driver to fine tune the handling to suit both road conditions and driving style. Brembo brakes are fitted which were overhauled as part of the significant works carried out over the last year.

The Drive

Taught, responsive and entertaining, we joined Chris for a short test drive and the car proved to be free from any noticeable knocks and rattles.

The flat four engine sounds fantastic through the aftermarket Racebox exhaust and the WRX accelerates well and stops quickly while gear changes are smooth and precise. Check out the "On The Road" video to share our experience.

Electrics and Other

All dials, switches and gauges appear in good order and Chris confirms all work as they should to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

About as good as it gets for a WRX, a fantastic opportunity with the hard work done and the low mileage UK spec car that this example is.

This is a great car that has benefitted from huge investment over the last year and result is a ready to use car with sparkling performance.
