Introduction

I was looking for a stylish and eye catching car to satisfy my desire to own my first British classic car. The beautiful, sleek design with those nostalgic tail fins made it an easy decision - and I've never regretted choosing this one!

My Sunbeam Alpine has been in my ownership for 6 years. Unfortunately my circumstances have now change due to caring for a family member. I no longer have time to show it off at classic car shows or drive it on car rallies and to meets. It needs to be driven and enjoyed.

Exterior

The Sunbeam Alpine's design - with similarities to the Ford Thunderbird - makes it simply beautiful to look at. The looks are matched with a true 1960s driving experience.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with steel wheels and whitewall tyres, which enhances the aesthetic considerably. They are all in a good state but will require repainting at some point.

All tyres are in a good condition, and a spare tyre is included in the boot.

Bodywork

The exterior is in good condition, with no obvious dings or dents.

The shutlines are great and there are no signs of rust in the sills or doors - probably due to its previous life in California.

Paint

Generally the paintwork is sound. It has been resprayed at some point during its life.

The engine bay shows the original shade of Moonstone White.

There's some slight cracking near the off side head light, there's a chip on off side rear wheel hub, and there are superficial scratches by the door handle.

Glass and Trim

The glass in the car is original with no chips or issues.

Interior

The lovely shade of red inside the car marries perfectly with the white exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The trim is red vinyl with a black dash board.

The vinyl seats will require some attention due to some tearing of the fabric. It's not too visible, but will probably want addressing. There is also a small piece of vinyl missing on the drivers seat at the back.

The carpets are also red and I believe are original with no major issues.

The car has a hard top which will need a respray, but the headlining is in good condition.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition. All instruments work perfectly and are easy to see.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is also in black and original, with the Rootes motif in the centre.

The gearstick is also original.

Mechanics

A well laid out and compact 1592cc engine, fitted with 2 zenith downdraft carbs. It looks the part and is easy to maintain.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been upgraded to a 1.6l, which has been well maintained in my ownership. Lots of components have been replaced in the last year, including spark plugs, coil, lead set, distributor cap, water pump, new battery, and new battery cables.

The engine has been stripped down and rebuilt to fit new head gaskets.

I had a new exhaust pipe fitted a few months ago.

Suspension and Brakes

Work completed in my ownership comprises new brake cylinders and shoes on both sides, with handbrake adjustments.

The Drive

All instruments are nicely laid out and clear.

This car is lovely and smooth to drive. It starts first time and runs really well. Ticks over at 1k rpm.

It can even keep up with modern traffic!

Electrics and Other

All the electrics work on the car with no issues. I had the points replaced with an electronic starter, which has improved the car.

It is also fitted with a refurbished 1960s radio, which looks the part.

History and Paperwork

This Sunbeam Alpine started its life in California and was imported back in 1989, at which point a subtle restoration was carried out.

There are old MOT certificates from 2010, and it's been serviced annually by my enthusiastic classic car engineer.

There is a folder of invoices and receipts from 2014, but none retained for the older restoration. The car has also been professionally scanned as part of a project to identify a Sunbeam Harrington, which is a barn find. The computerised scan is included in the sale.

The car has a soft top fitted, which was new when I purchased the car. The hard top is included in the sale.

    Hello, please can you advise me on the following: There is mention of the engine previously being apart at some point. 1. How may miles has the engine covered in it’s life.
    2. What prevention has been previously taken, such as lead free head conversion, or is being taken such as the use of lead fuel additives, in order to enable the engine to run on unleaded fuel safely without incurring damage to the valves.
    3. What has been done if anything to the suspension and steering components, I’d like to establish whether any of this has been renewed as some of these parts are perishable, rubbers, springs, shocks etc. Please provide some details. Thanks.

    Hello that’s the mileage on the clock but I was advised it has probably been round the clock.
    It runs on lead free petrol with a lead additive.
    Details of rear shocks, axle, reground crank and bearings replacement in 2020 which is shown on the history paperwork. Thanks..

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.
