Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A beautiful little drop head sports car, it isn't often that you'll see a Sunbeam Alpine on the roads these days.

In 1956 Ken Howes and Jeff Crompton were tasked with doing a complete redesign of the Sunbeam Alpine. Their main focus was the US market like many British manufacturers. As well as refined looks, the series V featured a 1,725cc engine with twin Zenith-Stromberg carburettors which produced 93bhp, the quickest Alpine yet.

This example coming to auction has undergone an extensive restoration, bodywork through to the engine, and now presents in very good condition.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after liaising with Clive the owner, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This little gem has been my pride and joy for the last decade. Blood, sweat and tears went into the restoration process but we can all agree it was worth it.

Clive has really enjoyed this classic sports car during his ownership. During that time he has completed a lot of work on the car. Just take a look at the paperwork gallery to see how much has been done and spent over the years.

He tells us "I always wanted to own a Sunbeam Alpine, and when I got the chance I couldn't say no - it's now time for someone else to enjoy the car just as much as I have".

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

One of the first cars James Bond used on screen, you can see why, classic sports car styling.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with sporty wheels and chrome hubs wrapped in Bridgestone/Pirelli rubber - it gives the Sunbeam that classy '60s styling.

We think the wheels look good after reviewing the photos, please have a look through for a detailed view.

Bodywork

This is one well cared for example - all the bodywork looks to be in excellent condition.

The shut lines across all the panels look good, and no dents etc observed. Please take a look at the detailed images to see the body panels up close.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful Carnival Red the paint is even in finish and colour - Clive has part-taken a full respray and even had the bumpers re-chromed.

Inspecting the images you can see that the paint is deep and rich in gloss, Clive got caught out when trying to capture the car, and you can see the rain droplets beading nicely.

Glass and Trim

Also in great condition, the glass looks undamaged and all the trim looks fairly fresh too. Clive reports there are no sign of discolouration or degradation and the car is ready for the new owner to enjoy.

Please view the photos and videos for a more detailed view.

Interior

Accommodating interior and above-average weatherproofing, everything you need for a good British road trip.

Seats and Carpets

We really like the look of the carpets, seats and interior in this sporty little convertible. The seats have been newly upholstered with hard-wearing vinyl. We particularly like the red design touches and seatbelts that match the exterior of the car.

Please view the interior photographs in more detail.

Dashboard

A simple dashboard, just a few dials. Clive has fitted a new burr walnut dash - all in an excellent condition. We did notice a few areas that would benefit from a light clean.

Clive has informed us that all the dials etc work as they should do.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Many other examples you see have replacement/aftermarket steering wheels and gear sticks that just don't look right - however, this one is in line with the rest of the car, all original condition.

A great big two-spoke steering wheel puts you in control of this car, very '60s - we love it.

Please see the images to view these original pieces close up.

Mechanics

The desirable 1725cc engine which is known for its reliability - this is the best of the bunch and the one to have.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the Sunbeam 1.7L engine, the best of the Alpine, outputting 93bhp.

Clive has had a complete engine rebuild on this example, he's also gone over and above, installing a new clutch, uprated camshaft and has carried out a twin-Weber conversion. The original carbs and manifold come with the car too.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was independent at the front using coil springs and at the rear had a live axle and semi-elliptic springing which was revised and refined in the series V.

When purchasing the car he completed a total brake overhaul. Please view the photos for a closer look at the underside etc.

The Drive

Clive assures us this car drives as good as it looks. "It'll definitely put a smile on your face, the moment you get out onto an open road."

"It's not a classic you see every day, so I often get a lot of questions about it. A real conversation starter," says Clive

Clive assures us the car drives beautifully and fault-free.

Electrics and Other

Clive has fitted a Kenwood radio and Electric ignition, some practical enhacements.

We love the simple dashboard set up, back to the raw driving experience - free from distractions.

History and Paperwork

Mountains of handwritten notes and details during the restoration process show that a tremendous amount of care and attention has gone into restoring the Alpine to its former glory.

Since 77,000 miles on the clock, Clive has had a lot of work done, including:

Is this meant to read as partaken? “has part-taken a full respray” as I wasn’t sure if it was referring to a part respray or its had a full respray.
What is the black near the hinges of the bonnet?
Is the black on the sill on the n/s rust?
Thanks

Hi Clive,
Ah yes. I wasn’t 100%, but I thought as much. Basically it is always in position. Thanks for that.

Colin.

Hi Clive,
Just another question. I see there is a soft top included in the sale. What condition is this in, any rips etc, and is it easy to fit.
Regards,
Colin.

Hi Clive,
Thank you for explaining that. I am very interested and will keep a keen eye on the bids. I know I’ve bid on it already, but that was only to get an understanding of how the bidding charges worked. It will fetch a considerable amount more than what its at , at the moment, good luck with it.
Regards,
Colin.

Hi Clive,
As there is no current mot, will it have a new one, especially as the last one was showing corrosion o/f/r back in 2017.
Regards,
Colin.

Is there a hood in place or is it a GT?
Is it fitted with an overdrive gearbox?
Is it possible to see the car as I live locally to Cranbrook?
