Introduction

Glyn Parry
Automotive Photographer and Videographer

Enhancing a classic MG, without diluting an inch of appeal.

Modern takes on classic cars is always a challenge, but taking the spirit and appeal of an original MG TD into a usable and well-made but authentic experience presents the TD 2000 as a compelling case. Capturing the elegant essence and styling refinement of the original, the TD 2000 is manufactured and factory built using some of the original MG tooling and design from their iconic TD, but with some useful concessions.

Even the purists have conceded, that the TD 2000 has managed to successfully combine the use of modern electrics and mechanics without diluting the original's character. These factors help to make this a dependable driving experience, for those looking for a unique and fun solution to fair-weather motoring.

Imported into the UK in 2014, this 2006 built cream and green 2.0-litre Silverstone edition comes with air-con, a five-speed gearbox, leather seats and trim and a CD/MP3 player. Exclusive with a premium price to match when released, only a few TD 2000s have been imported into the UK.

The car has just 4,154 recorded miles, two keys and its owner's wallet - it was serviced around 150 miles ago and comes with an MOT to August 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It is a charming car to drive with all of the benefits of modern engineering.

Intending to buy an original MG TD, Steve came across this replica and considered it a more appealing alternative. Concerned about the potential pitfalls of rebuilds and the uncertain history of finding a solid 90-year-old example at a reasonable price, the close likeness and the use of modern mechanics and electrics, along with the bonus of Toyota reliability swayed him towards this well-looked-after example.

His only reason for parting with it is due to medical decline which makes it increasingly difficult to use.

Exterior

Beautfully crafted, the TD 2000 is elegantly presented with a near-perfect exterior.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in excellent shape, with tight spokes and very little in terms of road wear.

The car, including the spare tyre, is fitted with the original factory fitted Goodyear Eagles - they all have a positive degree of even tread.

Bodywork

The steel chassis is in excellent condition with a liberal coat of rust inhibitor to protect it, with just a few marks noted on the jacking points. The fibreglass bodywork incorporates side intrusion bars and is well-mounted with no damage. The panel fit is positive with no significant flaws spotted.

The wings are a good fit, with the doors opening and closing without effort. The steel bonnet has been thoughtfully designed with gas struts.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The gelcoat is in excellent condition, with nothing more than a minor but a treatable mark spotted on the offside edge of the rear wing and minor road stone chips up front. It has a good lustre and a consistent colour match.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

No issues were observed in terms of the glass or seals. The lights and lenses are all free of damage.

The chrome work is presentable, with some mild age-related wear.

Interior

Lavishly furnished in leather and veneer, there are several useful creature comforts to enjoy.

Seats and Carpets

The ergonomics is not surprisingly close to the 1930s idea of usability, but the neatly crafted leather seats make it a comfy environment. Both seats are in near-perfect condition.

The carpets are in excellent shape, with no observation of significant wear.

There is a protective rubber mat to ensure the driver's footwell is free of unnecessary wear.

Dashboard

The dashboard presentation is excellent, with no concerns to worry the next owner. The veneer facia, switches, buttons and desirable VDO dials are in excellent shape, with everything reported to work as it should, including the air con.

There is just a little scuffing noted on the driver's side door card.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden Moto-Lita steering and gear lever are free from any sign of age and complement the inviting and almost flawless presentation of the cabin.

Mechanics

The reliable 2-litre engine doesn't dilute the visceral thrill of driving the TD - plus you know you'll always make it to your destination!

Engine and Gearbox

The Toyota 2-litre engine fires up without any problems, as to be expected. It runs smoothly without any undulation or hesitancy, with no unwanted exhaust smoke observed throughout the day.

The gearbox and clutch operate as smoothly as you would expect.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with independent double-wishbone front suspension and a leaf-spring back axle, the car is generally free of any unwanted mechanical noises, with no problems encountered around corners or on uneven roads.

The car is fitted with all-round drilled disc brakes and operates without any reported flaws.

The Drive

The very purpose of the TD is to offer an authentic driving experience without the drawbacks of owning a 90-year-old car. To say it drives and handles like the original, but with modern steering brakes and gears would be a fair assessment, yet the feedback and driving engagement are still very much there. Playful around corners, there’s enough bite to excite the enthusiast but also ease in the amateur.

The engine is the same flexible unit used in 1990s Toyotas, so it demonstrated a reasonably ‘analogue’ feel with all of the associated virtues of Toyota engineering. It pulls well, with no reports of oil pressure or engine temperature issues. It also sounds authentically potent, no doubt helped by the low driving position and the nimble chassis. The steering is precise and deals with potholes and ruts without too many issues.

Electrics and Other

The hood is free of any damage aside from a little sun bleaching. It appears to have been hardly used and therefore free of any outdoor elements. The car also comes with a tonneau cover and hood jacket, both are in excellent shape

History and Paperwork

Asides from servicing and light maintenance, the car has not needed much in terms of upkeep.

We've listed the car as a 2014 as that is the date recorded on the V5, however we understand from the seller the car was built in 2006.

Imported into the UK via Australia in 2014 directly to Bespoke Performance of Ware, the UK distributor for TD Cars. It comes with 10 years of its UK maintenance and service invoices, with additional work to the brakes and fuel pipes in 2017. A new battery was fitted in 2022 and supplied with its owner manual, service book and two keys. It was last serviced in August 2023, around 150 miles have been added since and has an MOT until August 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
