Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Celica Supra is a significant milestone in Toyota's sports car portfolio.

Toyota reputation for producing well-built and exceptionally reliable cars, goes way beyond the humble family runaround. The Celica Supra is an evolution of the legendary Celica, positioned as a luxury sports car, with a particular emphasis on state-of-the-art technology, power and comfort. Cleanly styled, practical and with plenty of presence and ability, the 2nd generation Celica Supra is now recognised as one the finest 1980s JDM cars.

This is an opportunity to obtain a family-owned UK spec model with just ~48,956 recorded miles. This 1984 model is plushly kitted out and finished in blue with silver highlights, having been acquired by the current owner's grandfather very early in the car's life. This version is the updated model of the original, it boasts Lotus-tuned suspension, an upgraded front spoiler and flared wheel arches, to complement the all-digital dashboard display and punchy twin-cam fuel-injected 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine. The vendor has recently spent around £6,000 on a mechanical and electrical recommissioning, after the car has come out of ~20 years in storage. It will be eligible for road tax and MOT exemption in October of 2024, comes with two keys, recent invoices and its original driver's handbook and service booklet. A new MOT will be actioned before the car is sold.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Darren the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It was my Grandad's pride and joy and he only drove it at the weekends.

Darren has owned this car for ~2 years now, it being passed over to him by his Grandad, he tells us "I love how nostalgic it is, I used to sit in the car as a 9-year-old wondering why people would slow down to look at the car on the motorway (now I know why). He took great care of it".

As mentioned, the car has been in long term storage, and so Darren has actioned some recommissioning work as detailed in the invoices by marque specialists JM Imports. He goes on to say "Even though the car is ~39 years old it has the same technology you'll see in modern cars. Electric seats, windows, sunroof, cruise control, there's a light bulb under the bonnet and a digital dash - It always reminds me of watching Knight Rider when I sit in there!". Despite the car playing a huge part in the families life, Darren has decided to sell the car due to a lack of use, and to free up funds. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The bodywork is all original and has survived remarkably well, a testament to careful ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys show typical signs of the car's age but are free from any major curb damage, making them being ideal candidates for a refurbishment to shine again.

The car is fitted with a full set of Nankang Tyres, all dating from 2021, so they have plenty of life in them and of course replaced after the long term storage.

Bodywork

The exterior metalwork presents itself positively, with a good panel fit, even shut lines and there is no significant panel damage noticed. Structurally the car is solid, with no immediate damage noted on the floor pan, engine bay or boot floor. Visually, the inner wheel wells, suspension mounts and chassis rails look to be in good shape, and the car had a clean MOT last year.

There is a little corrosion noted on the windscreen scuttle panel and the inside of the lower section of the driver-side door. There are also bubbles on the sunroof and a minor dent on the corner of the rear valance - but nothing that distracts. All doors open and close with ease, with their hinges and struts operating with no problems.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint appears to be original, with an even colour match throughout. The car does show a few signs of its age, mainly mild marks and surface paint wear on the bonnet and the driver's door. There are also a handful of light scuffs on the arches and rear wings. For a car approaching ~40 years old, it has survived remarkably well and these all appear to be consistent with a car that has been in long-term storage rather than everyday use.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

There were no issues noted in terms of the lighting or the glass panels and seals. The nearside mirror has a broken lens and the mechanism itself will need investigation.

The bumpers are well mounted, with some signs of age noted on the front item. The plastic trim is complete and in good condition.

Interior

The interior has been very well kept, with very little to suggest it's ~39 years old.

Seats and Carpets

The fabric seats are firm and in very good condition, with no significant damage aside from a minor hole on the driver-side.

The carpets are generally in decent shape, with just small signs of age noted in the driver's footwell. The boot carpet has a few marks, but there appear to be no signs of water ingress.

Dashboard

The cabin has worn well, and is well beyond the expectations of a car this age, with no damage noted on the dashboard, trim or centre console. The dials and controls are in good shape, with the console legible. All functions are said to work, which includes the electric aerial. The car also retains what is believed to be its original FM/Tape player.

The headlining is free of damage perhaps just needing a clean, with no issues noted on the door cards.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original steering wheel that screams 80s, it is in great shape with just a few marks.

The gearstick and gaitor tell a similar story too, the long term garage storage has served this car well, take a look through the images to see the detail.

Mechanics

Mechanically the car is a delight, it drives beautifully and pulls very well, benefitting from ~£6,000 recommissioning work.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started straight away with no hesitation or strains. The warning lights remained off as the engine idled. The engine soon got up to temperature, becoming smoother with every passing minute. By the time we took the car out for a 30-minute drive, the engine ran exceptionally smoothly, with no hiccups, undulations or unwanted noises. No fluid leaks were noted on the day. The engine ancillaries are evidently recent, a cam-belt change having been actioned, along with a new radiator being fitted.

The 5-speed manual gearbox selects gears with no reported issues, and each shift appearing to be smooth. There are said to be no problems with the clutch. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides very smoothly, with no knocks or thuds heard from the suspension, as to be expected, the cars suspension having been looked over as part of the recommissioning work.

The car brakes evenly, with no judders or squeals, again the brakes were checked and overhauled with new pads and discs all round.

The Drive

As a tribute to Toyota's high-grade engineering and quality, the Supra still conducts itself with complete refinement. The cabin is not interrupted by any unwanted mechanical noises, really betraying the age of the car.

The 30-minute drive along the 40 mph roads, allowed us to appeciate how well-mannered and smooth the Celica Supra is. The engine was responsive, with a smooth, even delivery and no hesitation from the fuel-injected 2.8-litre six cylinder engine.

The combination of heavy traffic, as well as a few open stretches, demonstrated how well the car behaved itself. Darren has not reported any issues in terms of the oil pressure and engine temperature. The steering appeared to be vibration-free too.

Electrics and Other

Darren informed us that all electrical functions were working to his knowledge. The electric sunroof and headlamp lifts were proven to function with no straining. It also comes with its original radiator as well as a box of old parts as pictured.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from long term family ownership, a £6,000 recommission after ~20 years storage, this remarkably original classic is ready for a new enthusiast to enjoy.

Originally registered new by Toyota main dealer Foster Cars of Southend-on-Sea in October 1984, the original service book suggests that it was retained by its first owner for about a year. It's believed the car was then taken on by its second owner not long after and has been retained by the family ever since then. While there is no available paperwork documenting this, the car's current owner, his grandson, Darren has recommissioned the car after it was in long term storage of at least ~20 years.

As part of this recommissioning in 2022, the car has seen a new battery, four new tyres, new discs and pads, a fuel pump, a timing belt, a water pump, an aluminium radiator and a service. Further work carried out in 2023 includes electric and mechanical work, including new injectors, new electrics and unit for the aerial, further brake, steering and engine work. Since this last batch of work, the car has only covered ~20 miles. The car will be eligible for free road tax and MOT exemption from October 2024, Darren has actioned a new MOT. It comes with its original handbook, service booklet and two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi I’m highest bidder at moment. I actually worked for foster cars in the 80,s so I probably saw this car on pdi. Also it’s listed as a MA67 which was North American (JT2) market so I’m sure it’s a JT1MA61 Cheers malc.
