Introduction

‘Rarer than a Ferrari and less common than a Porsche’

Initially, the Supra was called the Celica XX, slightly longer than the Celica to accommodate the inline-six engine. In 1978, the Celica XX was offered with a 2.6-litre inline-six, which produced 110bhp, with the option of a 4-speed automatic with overdrive that engaged at 35mph, or a 5-speed manual gearbox. It was in 1980, after some cosmetic upgrades, that the Celica XX engine displacement was upgraded to the 2.8-litre, producing 116bhp and 145 lb-ft of torque.

By mid-1981, Toyota had completely redesigned the Celica XX and the name Celica Supra would be used. Pop-up headlights and an increased wheelbase were just some of the key changes from the Japanese manufacturer. In 1984, more changes were on the cards for the Celica Supra, with the power increased to 160bhp and 163 lb-ft of torque, and more electronics, such as the digital dashboard, cruise control, electric aerial and radio cassette, were now standard equipment.

This brings us to this 1985 Toyota Supra 2.8i, a lovely example which has been owned by Steve for over ~10 years. Steve has improved the Supra over the years, bringing it to a very presentable condition, and it's ideal for any enthusiast looking for a rare, desirable JDM classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“Ever since an ex-girlfriend’s mum had one, I have always loved the look of the Celica Supra."

Steve has been a fan of the Celica Supra for many years after spotting one owned by an ex-girlfriend’s parents. He went on to own one some years later, and again around ~10 years ago when he spotted this, described as a project 1985 example, for sale.

Once he purchased the car, it went straight into the body shop and sat there for several years while they carried out a full respray. They completed this in 2024, and since the classic has remained in storage, with only odd bits done when time allowed.

The lack of use and the planned move abroad are what’s leading to the sale of this Japanese classic.

Exterior

The Celica Supra's great styling has earned it a place as one of the best-looking JDM cars of the 80s.

Wheels and Tyres

The original alloy wheels have been refurbished and finished with a fantastic-looking chrome-look powder coating. These are all in excellent condition, as are the BF Goodridge tyres, which are like new.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the Supra, the bodywork is in excellent shape, with no dings or dents spotted, and the panels appear to align as they should.

The Supra had a factory metal sunroof, which has been replaced with a carbon-fibre one, as these were prone to corrosion. This hasn’t been opened for many years and worked fine the last time it was used, but to be safe, we decided not to open it.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in Silver Metallic, the paintwork is excellent, having been repainted. There are a couple of small storage scratches and a couple of small blisters at the top of the rear quarter panel.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with no noticeable scratches; the seals are also in good order.

The headlights pop up as they should, with all the 80s coolness you could imagine. There is some light crazing on the indicator lenses, and the rear lights are undamaged.

Steve has struggled to find some replacement sill covers, so these are missing. However, we had an idea whilst photographing the car: it may be possible to 3D-print some and use the shape on the front wheel arch to get the correct profile (where there’s a will, there’s a way).

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Cruise control, electric windows, sunroof and air conditioning - the Supra was very well specced for the day.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats are in good condition, with just some minor signs of age, but nothing excessive. The driver’s seat does have adjustable pneumatic lumbar support, and both door panels are in good order and free from damage.

The carpets are original throughout and show light signs of age, as you would expect for a 41-year-old car.

Inside the boot, the spare wheel is in place, and this was refurbished with the others; therefore, it is in excellent condition.

image

Dashboard

The blue vinyl dashboard has a small age-related crack on the top. The instruments show ~148,848 miles. The digital instruments do work apart from a fault on the temperature and fuel gauges. Steve has purchased a set of spare instruments, but these haven’t been tested or fitted.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel and gear selector are in good order, with no real signs of heavy use.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

image

Mechanics

Six cylinders and 2.8 litres, hooked up to electronic fuel injection make for great 80s sports car performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.8-litre fuel-injected engine produces ~168bhp, fires up without hesitation and runs very smoothly, with no issues reported.

With an automatic gearbox, the Supra performs well and pulls strongly through the gears, which change smoothly.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Supra is great to ride in. No knocks or bangs were heard on our test drive, and the car handles as you would expect.

The Supra comes to a stop in a straight line, with no issues reported by Steve.

image

The Drive

An exercise in pure retro charm, powered by the eager straight-six and driven through the rear wheels. The Celica Supra captures the essence of an 80s grand tourer with the iconic boxy styling and comfortable interior. Its unique character and wonderful engine note take you straight back to the 80s, where cars had real character.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear appears in good condition, with very few signs of age to the lettering. Steve tells us the electric aerial does not work and the air conditioning does need a regas. A Clarion head unit has been fitted, the original unit is included, which does have a fault, and there is also another head unit included; again, Steve hasn’t fitted or tested this.

History and Paperwork

At ~£9,888 back upon release, the Celica Supra was an instant hit, and it’s easy to see why.

Because the car has been off the road for several years, the paperwork is quite thin. There are some invoices for some of the work Steve had carried out to bring the Celica Supra back to a usable condition.

There are a few jobs left to carry out, such as the instruments, sill trims, and some odd bits of clips here and there, but generally the car is in great shape for its age, looks fantastic thanks to a full respray and runs as it should, with no issues reported.

Finding a Celica Supra is no doubt a difficult task due to the low numbers produced, and according to ‘How Many Left’, there are only 19 registered for the road and 67 SORN, which makes this a rare find and ideal for any enthusiast or fan of 80s Japanese classics.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail, so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
