Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

Purposeful and powerful, the Supra Turbo baits Porsches and Cossies for breakfast.

The Supra first saw the light of day in 1986, establishing itself as the halo export model in a varied range of cars, trucks and vans. The 2-seater coupe fulfilled a role as a stylish, comfortable and well-equipped cruiser, inheriting Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability. But the Supra needed a little more urge to make it perfect. That was addressed in January 1989 with the UK introduction of the Supra Turbo. By now, the third-generation A70 Series had been facelifted, distinguished by a new front spoiler, updated alloy wheels, climate control and an RDS radio, but the true measure of its calling came from the ~232BHP intercooled turbocharged version of the 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine. Fitted with a limited-slip differential, anti-lock brakes and variable induction technology, the Supra Turbo gave Porsche owners something serious to think about.

Harnessing the devastating potential of a Turbocharger had been the nemesis of many manufacturers, but Toyota dealt with the turbo lag delay by using a method of measuring engine intake airflow via an electric ignition triggered off the flywheel. The 7M-GTE engine is a technical showcase for what was, at the time, Toyota's fastest production car.

This superbly presented 1990 4-speed automatic finished in grey with grey leather upholstery has just ~55,841 miles on he clock under the sympathetic guidance of 3 previous owners. It has an excellent service history, with all 27 stamps but one carried out by a Toyota main dealer. Having very recently been serviced, it also comes with all its owners' booklets, original bill of sales, two keys and an MOT to June 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The Supra has great presence, thanks in part to its excellent exterior condition and smart paint finish.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” alloys have lasted well, with minor signs of age but free of any major curb damage.

The car is fitted with the correct 50 profile Dunlop tyres. The front pair are around 20 years old, the rears are older, but all have legal tread.

Bodywork

The body is free of any discernible damage, with no panel dents noted. They fit flush to the body and have even shut lines. All doors open and close with ease. A small exposed chip on the driver's door edge has corroded. The chassis rails, engine bay, floor pan, wheel wells and boot floor all look solid. There is slight corrosion noted on the offside rear sill.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The metallic grey paint has a positive lustre and a smooth finish. There are a handful of mild marks across the car, but nothing that distracts. The nose paint finish catches the light with a slightly different shade.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good shape, with decent seals. The lights and rear lenses are smartly presented. A small point, there is however, a crack on the nearside front wing indicator.

The trim is all well-mounted, showing mild signs of age in places. The most obvious wear was found on the lower plastic trim on the front air dam. There are a few mild marks on the tailgate spoiler too.

Interior

The very original cabin retains its plushness and shows it has been cared for since new.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats retain a decent firmness. The front seats have a few creases and bolster wear consistent with the age of the car.

The driver's side mat has a little wear, but otherwise the carpets are in good shape. The luggage area is tidy.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with a few minor age-related marks. There are screw holes on both sides of the centre console besides the footwells.

The switches and controls look good, and the dials are all legible. The interior trim and headlining have been well preserved. The air-conditioning is weak, everything else is said to work.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3 spoke steering wheel is finished in black leather and looks in good condition.

The automatic gear selector is finished in grey and also presents well as pictured.

Mechanics

The Supra with its 24-valve turbocharged engine promises exciting performance and exhilarating handling.

Engine and Gearbox

From cold, the engine starts and idles with ease, and the straight-six doesn’t take long to get up to temperature. All dashboard ignition lights stayed off during our visit, and there were no signs of fluid leaks. There were no unwanted exhaust fumes. It's worth mentioning that the engine runs on unleaded fuel with no need for additives.

The engine has been well-maintained throughout its life, showing an impressive servicing and maintenance history. The ancillaries and hoses are good, with age-related wear on the metal components.

The automatic gearbox works with no problems, it has a positive kick down and looks free of slackness. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

While the front suspension coils show their age, the open road is kind to the suspension, lower speeds a few minor noises were heard but nothing untoward.

The brakes have a good progressive feel, with no fade but a squeal was noted on the drive.

The Drive

The Supra is a sumptuous and luxurious car that is best described as a grand tourer rather than as an out-and-out sports car. An effortless cruiser, it's easy to forget that the Supra's well-weighted controls and civil manners are balanced by its impressive turbocharged punch.

The engine is refined on the move, never intrusive and smooth and performed faultlessly during our test drive. It pulls evenly, and while we didn’t push the engine, the 24-valve turbocharger has a positive reputation for manageable lag, thanks to the controlled intake airflow as part of the electronic ignition system.

The speed-sensitive power steering works perfectly, offering a good feel and precision. The engine is very flexible, allowing the driver to guide the car with confidence. The handling feels neutral, with no roll or unwanted noises heard from the wheels at speed.

Electrics and Other

The headlamps raise and retract with no issues. We didn't test all the electrics, the only thing of note Danny had to mention was that the air-conditioning is weak.

History and Paperwork

This low mileage example of the Turbo has an exceptional service history when in use, nearly all main dealer, has just 3 former registered keepers and has been well-maintained throughout its life.

Registered in September 1990 by Ferry Toyota of Hull, the car was retained by its first keeper until 2000, when it was passed to its next owner. The car remained in the area until 2014, when it was sold to its last owner in St Albans.

The Supra has a thorough service history, with an almost complete main dealer servicing schedule. There are 26 Toyota service stamps, one from Nissan, which took over the Toyota Dixon franchise in 2002, and the most recent one was carried out in June 2025 by an independent specialist who is a former Toyota mechanic.

Aside from servicing, the car has also received sundry maintenance, including brake work and a new radiator. The car has also had head gasket work and has seen two cam belt changes.

It has been unused in dry storage since 2019. It comes with an MOT to June 2026 and its complete owner's booklets, original bill of sales, a stack of invoices and past MOT certificates since 2010. It has two keys and a complete tool kit.
