Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Toyota built 2,500 ST205 Celica GT-Fours so they could homologate it for use in the WRC.

Producing a whopping ~255BHP (for the Japanese market), the GT4 was the most powerful Celica ever produced when it was launched in 1994. Out of the 2,500 produced, 2,100 were for the Japanese Market. In the iconic Castrol rally livery the GT-Four was instantly recognisable in the 90s, driven by Didier Auriol in 1994. Carlos Sainz also drove a GT-Four to win the 1991 World Rally Championship, albeit the earlier ST185 model.

This particular ST205 comes to market after ~1 year ownership, a JDM import that first came to the UK in 2008. Some recent expenditure in the current ownership include a new clutch and starter motor. It presents in nice condition inside and out, and has an upgraded stereo with the original supplied. Take a look at the full listing for more details.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the WRC, the Celica has great history in the championship so I've always wanted one.

James bought the GT-Four last year after craving one since they originally came out, following the rally successes back in the day. He's had the clutch replaced in his ownership along with the starter motor and general servicing.

Having had a change of circumstances James has decided to send the GT-Four to Auction with us, he has loved his time with the car even though he's only driven ~200 miles in it. James will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The huge spoiler, race wheels and air-intakes show the GT-Four's rally heritage.

Wheels and Tyres

Six-spoke white Speedline Corse are fitted to this GT4, adding to the sporting nature of the coupe. In terms of condition, we did notice a few small chips on the wheels but nothing too major in our view, except a big flake of paint on the front passenger side wheel.

A full matching set of Kumho tyres were wrapped on the wheels, all looked in good condition, with a decent amount of tread on them, all dated 2019 too. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the GT-Four looked in good condition, we didn't notice any major dents across the car, or any obvious signs of corrosion. We did notice a small amount of scuffing on the bottom of the passenger door though. Panel gaps on the doors and bumpers looked tight.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Renaissance Red", the paint looked in great condition, James had the car detailed recently so we didn't notice any swirls in the paint and the coverage did look very even too. The only area where the paint didn't look great was the spoiler risers, where the right one had a scrape on it and the left one the paint was cracking on it.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass around the car looked in great condition, we didn't notice any chips, cracks or discolouration.

Trim looked to be in good condition on the whole, we didn't notice a few small imperfections; the scuttle panel looked like it has been bleached by the sun, and the GT-Four badge on the boot lid had lost some of its silver finish. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

A driver centric interior, all controls point toward you in the GT-Four.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats hold you in position with deep bolsters, with a very 90s looking pattern on them. They did look like they could do with a shampoo to give them a refresh, we didn't notice any rips in the fabric though, just some wear/ageing as pictured.

The over mats looked very thick and in good condition, the driver's one could also have done with a shampoo to refresh it. The fitted carpets also looked in great condition. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The speedometer sits in the centre of the instrument binnacle, to the right; an oil temp gauge and boost gauge to add to the rally feel. The radio and other controls for A/C etc are all on a centre console which faces towards the driver. The odometer was replaced for a UK MPH unit when the car was imported as per the invoices.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The standard Toyota steering wheel is wrapped in black leather with contrast red stitching to match the paint. The wheel was showing slight signs of wear, some of the stitching was broken on the right side of the wheel.

The manual gearstick and gator was black leather with matching red stitching, it looked in good condition, however the base of the gator was loose, it should be an easy fix though. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The ~255BHP 2.0L turbo-charged engine sounds the business, with turbo flutters eluding to its motorsport heritage.

Engine and Gearbox

James keeps the battery disconnected as an extra safety feature, once connected the engine started first time and ran well, with no unusual noises just some lovely turbo chatter. On the road the engine pulled well as you would expect.

The manual gearbox was going into the gear with ease, we didn't notice any unwanted noises coming from the gearbox whilst out on the road with James. As mentioned, the clutch was replaced in current ownership in November. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road the suspension did feel quite stiff, James told us it was running on aftermarket springs from TEIN. He was planning to put standard springs back on to the car, one of the bits of work he would do if he was keeping the car, which should have given the car a more forgiving ride.

The brakes felt good, we didn't test them to the limit but they stopped the car well with no shakes or pulling on the steering. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

As mentioned above the GT-Four felt good on the road, plenty of power from the turbo-charged 2.0L, with all the noises you expect, the gearbox also performed well, with no issues getting into gear. To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

A touchscreen radio has been fitted to the GT-Four, however James has the original unit which will go with the car. He also has the original KMs clock to go with the sale too. We didn't test all the electrics in the car but James assured us everything was working as expected to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A JDM import that hit the UK shores in 2008, it comes to market from ~1 year ownership and has recently had a new clutch and starter motor fitted.

Originally a Japanese import with ~100,000km on the clock, it has been converted to a miles clock, reset to zero when imported in 2008. Since then it has covered ~40,107 miles. The GT-Four has a valid MOT until 2.08.2023, recent work includes a new clutch in 2022. MOTs have been carried out every year apart from 2017 since being imported.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
