The MR2 is built to last with the bonus of offering a fine driving experience too.

It's no secret that the MR2 in MK2 guise is now established as a modern classic. Sold in the UK with three trim levels, a coupe, GT and GT T-Bar all with different states of engine tune. Because of the unusually long production run of the MK2 MR2, one needs to do their homework to make sure that the car is what it states to be. The vast number of grey imports that flooded the market is not necessarily a bad thing, as many were well kept but often lack any meaningful history.

This is where Brians 1998 example comes in. Originally sold in Norfolk, it has been kept in its original condition with no suggestion of modification or tuning. The car is the most desirable of the UK MK2 MR2 family, with the revised rear lights and upgraded rear suspension, offering the 168BHP engine and the much appreciated T- Bar. Furthermore, it comes with just three previous owners and a full-service history. As a rival to the Mazda MX5, which is now firmly established as an investment, the MR2 can still be found for a modest outlay, but as the condition of the car has a dramatic effect on the way it drives and feels, it would be far more sensible to seek out an original and well-kept example.

Brian and his wife bought the car in 2014, they've been sparing with its use which has resulted in less than 2,000 miles added. Used as a weekend/occasional car they have made the decision to sell it mainly due to an increasing lack of use in recent years, especially given the restrictions over the past year.

Exterior

The car has seen a great deal of care to the body, with no chance of any colour fade.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has a full set of Goodyear tyres all round, all show good tread and have plenty of life left in them. The original alloys have been cared for, and as a result, are in excellent condition with no evidence of corrosion or damage from curbs.

Bodywork

The finishing of the bodywork is very good, with no issues with the panel fit or evidence of poor repair. There are no signs of damage or notable dents. The doors open and close well, with no resistance. There are minor signs of surface corrosion on the rear section of the near-side outer sill. The underside is clean, with the rustproofing still evident. The engine and boot wells are in good condition, with no issues to report.

Paint

The paint finish reveals a good lustre, with what is believed to be all original paint on the metal. The deep red colour is consistent throughout with no evidence of fade or haze. The front bumper sometimes catches the light in a slightly different colour, likely a small amount of remedial work in the past due to road rash. The front has a handful of minor chips, as to be expected for a car with a low nose.

Glass and Trim

No issues with the glass, with no signs of chips, cracks or repairs. The glass rubber is in good condition. The black window trim is in good condition with the glass roof panels in well-cared condition.

Interior

The leather interior enhances the exceptional Toyota build quality, it's worn the years well.

Seats and Carpets

The leather driver's seats show signs of typical use, with a small amount of wear and minor cracks evident on the bolster and bench of the seat roughly in line of a car of this age. The door cards are in good condition. The carpets are good, with no threading issues and have been looked after.

Dashboard

The overall presentation is good, with no cracks on the facia. The plastic has worn well, but there is a fair amount of scuffs and scratches on the left-hand side, particularly around the glovebox. The dials, switches and controls are in good condition, with minor signs of wear here and there. The centre console, cubby boxes and areas behind the seats are good.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in decent condition with small marks of wear and small tear at the bottom of the wheel observed. The gear stick is good, with the gaiter in good condtion.

Mechanics

With mechanical durability a given, the car has also seen a low number of miles over the current ownership.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start revealing no issues, with the engine firing on the button upholding Toyotas reputation for reliability. The car got to temperature with no problems, the lights remained off on the dashboard, with no evidence of smoke while the engine was running.

The engine presentation is good, with no immediate issues observed to the ancillaries, pipers or hoses. The exhaust is in good condition, with no signs of damage or blowing.

Suspension and Brakes

The running gear is said to be up to scratch, with no issues with the agile handling of the car. The brakes perform as expected, with their condition said to be good. No noises or knocks are reported to come from the steering. There is an expected coating of age-related surface corrosion on the components.

The Drive

Toyota found their driving verve with the introduction of the mid-engined MR2, with all generations being lauded by critics. This example drives well, with no significant issues. Its lack of use may be a concern but it has been well maintained over the years.

Electrics and Other

The Toyota brand is synonymous with quality, so as to be expected all of the electrical items on the car is in full working order, including the front light lifts. The car is fitted with a Kenwood CD/Stereo.

History and Paperwork

A fully stamped service book up to 2013, and sparingly used since then with maintenance as needed.

The car comes with full service history with stamps up to 2013, at which point its use had come to a few hundred miles a year. At this point, the car had just seen a major amount of work, including welding to the off-side rear sill, a new catalytic converter, rear brake calipers and pads and well as a cambelt change. Over the last nine years or so, it has seen a limited amount of use but has received two services over that period. It will need an MOT to get back on the road.

Hey Brian, in the on the road video the car seems to idle really high 2000rpm. Any ideas why this would be?

Hi Brian , again it’s very hard to see contrast on pics but the os sill repair / paint does look darker ? & I owned one before where the surface corrosion on the sill (similar to ns) was a lot more sinister upon trying to rectify it , it’d probably pass mot tho

The sill repair was done many years ago and I can’t see any problems. However if you are in doubt it would pay to view it yourself

Hi Joe, it must be an optical illusion as there is no damage whatsoever to the front bodywork.

Can I ask why it won’t be supplied with a valid MOT please, I see its had some previous emissions issues and has failed 7 MOT’S in the last 10 years. Is there provision to put an MOT on it prior to completion of purchase?

Morning Matt,if it’s a condition of the sale I will get tested.
I had a new catalytic converter fitted to overcome emission problems.
All failure problems were rectified .
