Introduction

Richard Gormley
Automotive Writer and Photographer

The Americans fell head over heels in love with the TR2 and it put Triumph back in the game – we can see why.

Widely regarded as the car that saved the Triumph brand the TR2 was everything a 50’s sports car should be. It was fast, light, simple and reliable as well as being immense fun to drive. Aimed at gaining entry to the critical US market the TR2 proved hugely popular across the pond firmly positioning Triumph to exploit the American thirst for fast, lightweight two seaters. Back home the TR2 was an instant hit too, thoroughly modernising the Triumph range. Although motorsport potential was not immediately recognised the TR2 soon began to deliver results with TR2’s taking 1st, 2nd, and 5th places in the RAC Rally. Powered by the Standard Vanguard engine which had a reputation for being ‘virtually indestructible’ this car was tough, dependable, and great to look at. The TR range was on the map and the rest is history.

This lovely, UK Market, RHD, TR2 is the sought after ‘long door’ model and comes to auction following just over 3 and a half years with its current owner. It’s highly original, unrestored and the current owner confirms it is a matching numbers example. Unmolested examples as solid as this are hard to find and this one benefits from having only 4 previous registered keepers since 1955. The paintwork would benefit from some TLC but this TR2 is wonderfully charming just as it is.

This listing was written from information supplied by Richard after meeting Adrian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A proper driving experience - lively, quick, nimble and enormous fun.

Adrian really is a car guy. Having owned and driven many iconic marks he also raced in the 60’s so he’s got a pretty good idea of what he likes. He tells us “I absolutely love these cars; I’ve had several over the years and you can’t beat the simplicity and visceral nature of the driving experience – you really have to do the work, but the reward is an absolute engagement with the engineering”.

He goes on to say “I bought this TR2 out of nostalgia really - it came up and I really couldn’t resist it - I’ve loved driving it and it really has brought back some wonderful memories. I’ve had a high torque starter, new battery, new seats, and electronic ignition fitted but otherwise the car is entirely original. It’s got plenty of power and is more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic”. Adrian has decided it’s now time for a new owner to enjoy this lovely TR2. He is happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below

Exterior

Unmistakable lines that set the TR styling tone for over two decades.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15”, 72 spoke wire wheels are in sound condition and appear to have been repainted relatively recently. They are fitted with period chrome spinners that have been recently replaced although the originals are available with the car.

The wheels are shod with 165/R15 tyres, three of which are Woosung and the other Firestone. The three Woosung tyres look in good condition and seem to have plenty of tread remaining. The Firestone one, did show some cracking, mainly above "Fire" on the logo.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, the panels look good, and we could see no obvious evidence of creasing or distortion. Shut lines around the doors, boot and bonnets look very good for a car of this era. For an unrestored car the bodywork presents well although there are some small areas of corrosion as would be expected on an unrestored example.

The original hood frame and hood fittings are with the car although it does not come with a soft top. A fibre glass hard top, without fittings, is supplied which requires some refurbishment and the car comes with two Tonneau covers.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Triumph "Signal Red" the paintwork is commensurate with an unrestored example. The car looks good overall and is certainly very useable, but the paintwork would benefit from some attention. The coverage is generally good with some areas having been repainted over the years, but the finish is flat as pictured.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen looked in good shape with no obvious cracks or marks. Likewise, lights, mirrors and lenses present very well. The car also comes with aero screens which appear in sound, serviceable condition. The chrome trim is in remarkably good condition and presents beautifully, really enhancing the cars 50’s looks.

Interior

It’s basic, charming and perfectly functional with a fantastic view over the bonnet – a pure 50s sports car

Seats and Carpets

The original seats have been replaced with black, period style, bucket seats which are in great condition and suit the car perfectly. Carpets appear to present well with no significant rips or tears that we could see. Door cards and other interior trim looked in good shape too.

Dashboard

The black, vinyl covered, pressed steel dash looks in good condition with no damage that we could see. Switchgear, instrument bezels and glass all appear to present well. The temperature gauge is a non-original item that Adrian advises is not currently functioning.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood rimmed Moto-Lita, period style, three spoke steering wheel which replaces the larger diameter original, looks absolutely fantastic and suits the interior of the car perfectly. The steering wheel is in great condition as is the Bakelite centre boss. This car has an adjustable steering column which was offered as an original factory option.

Mechanics

The tough, free revving and responsive Standard Vanguard derived engine is famous for being thoroughly dependable.

Engine and Gearbox

Delivering ~90BHP to the rear wheels the Standard Vanguard, 2.0L engine was enough to propel this diminutive sports car to a factory specified 108MPH. Transmission is through a four-speed box with synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and top.

The engine bay on this car was clean and uncluttered with no sigh of leaks or damage. On our cold start the car started eagerly from cold and, with a bit of choke, quickly settled down to a steady idle. Oil pressure looked good, and emissions appeared clear. Check out the “On the Road” video to see for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

This is 50’s motoring. The car is mounted on a sperate chassis and is fitted with Lockheed drum brakes all round. Suspension is coil-sprung at the front and leaf springs on a live axle at the rear.

The Drive

On our drive with Adrian the car looked, sounded, and felt superb. This is motoring from another era and yet the TR2 held its own in traffic, pulled well and stopped straight and evenly when required. Gear changes were slick and precise, and the car felt firm, compliant and planted.

The straight four sounded great with no untoward knocks or rattles – overall a great motoring experience Check out the On the Road video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

Electric on these cars are very simple and straightforward. All instruments and switchgear looked in good condition. This car benefits from a factory fitted heater in full working order.

Adrian pointed out that the temperature gauge is non-standard and is not currently working.

History and Paperwork

TR2s are hard to find in any condition – a UK RHD ‘long-door’ model, this original is rare indeed and this one is ready for the next custodian.

As well as being highly sought after TR, the TR2 has to be one of the most enjoyable, classic drives around. It’s stunningly pretty, it’s fast and the driver is completely connected. History on this car is limited having last had an MOT in 2004 with a mileage reading of 8,649. The paperwork includes bills for extensive work, a 2005 tax disc, and some old MOT certificates. Included in the file are photographs of floor pan replacement.

This is a solid, original car which can be thoroughly enjoyed as it is and improved over time. As can be seen in the photos the car comes with a range of spares including the original starter motor, hood fittings and chrome rocker box cover.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
