Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The TR4 combines striking Michelotti styling with lively performance, making it as enjoyable to drive as it is to look at.

The Triumph TR4 was first introduced in 1961, with production continuing until 1965. It was based on the chassis and drivetrain of its predecessor, the TR3, but was significantly res-tyled and modernised by the one and only Giovanni Michelotti.

Modern features such as roll-up windows - in place of the previous side screens - were introduced, and the more angular rear end increased boot space considerably. The car is powered by the standard pushrod inline-four engine, with a capacity of 2.1L.

This example comes to market after just over five and a half years of ownership, during which time it has been used sparingly for short weekend breaks. The car was imported to the UK in 1992 and fully restored in 1998.

If you are in the market for an open-top classic to use and enjoy this summer, this car is well worth considering.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Terry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have thoroughly enjoyed owning this Triumph roadster, but have decided it is time for someone else to enjoy the TR4.

When Terry was purchasing a Volkswagen Touareg for daily driving on Devonshire country lanes, he came across a dealer selling this lovely TR4 - he fell in love with it, and traded in his Morris Minor for it.

Terry has thoroughly enjoyed his ownership over the years and thinks it’s time for it to be enjoyed by the next owner so he is looking to pass on custodianship of this TR4.

Terry will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

A fine example of Giovanni Michelotti’s work, the TR4’s flowing, curvaceous lines have helped it age gracefully, maintaining strong visual appeal to this day.

Wheels and Tyres

The uprated 16” wire wheels present in great condition. The tyres are Kumho Power Stars, all of which show a good amount of remaining tread. No major cracking is visible, with only general age-related wear observed on the sidewalls.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork appears to be in good overall condition, with panel gaps aligning well visually around the car.

There are, however, some minor age-related marks, including several areas of hairline cracking. We noted a small mark on the front offside arch and some chipping around the edges of the doors. Terry mentions that, if he were to take the car to the next level, he would first address the driver’s door.

We’ve provided detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all media files to assess the condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in ‘Powder Blue’, the paintwork presents with generally even and fair coverage across all panels. We did notice some hairline cracks in the paint, more noticeable around the nearside windscreen wiper area and front Triumph badging. There is also a small mark on the offside front arch and the offside door, where three areas appear to have been touched in.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in very good condition for the car’s age. The window seals appear in good order and consistent with the overall condition of the car. The door handles and window surrounds also present well.

image

Interior

A 'Midnight Blue' vinyl interior paired with rounded dials creates a classic and inviting cabin, perfectly suited to open-top motoring.

Seats and Carpets

The factory matched 'Midnight Blue' vinyl seats with white piping have retained their shape well over the years, reflecting the care with which the car has been maintained.

The door cards and carpets present similarly, showing consistent condition throughout.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard shows no major damage or scuffs, and no warning lights were displayed during our visit.

The odometer read ~78,542 miles at the time of visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the original steering wheel and the black manual gear stick present in good condition.

For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

image

Mechanics

Powered by a spirited 2.1-litre engine, the TR4 is ideally suited to British roads and enjoyable weekend drives. In factory form, it was capable of a top speed of ~110 mph.

Engine and Gearbox

On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold and it performed well on the road, pulling strongly, idling smoothly, and running as expected.

Terry reports that the car starts from cold without issue and drives well, with the manual gearbox transferring the power smoothly to the rear wheels.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, offering a composed ride on Devonshire roads. The brakes perform well, bringing the car to a stop confidently.

During our drive, it felt exactly as you would expect from a well-maintained sports car of this era.

image

The Drive

Designed to combine performance with style, the TR4 delivers a rewarding driving experience. Its practical touches, like the larger boot, make it well suited to longer touring journeys.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Terry reports that everything is functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Being the fourth iteration of Triumph’s TR series, this example benefits from a strong heritage. It comes to market from five and a half years of ownership, ready to be enjoyed on the open road.

This TR4 remains largely original, retaining its 2.1-litre engine and black leather interior. It is fitted with non-original wire wheels, which nicely complement the car’s styling.

Please refer to the history and paperwork section to view previous MOT records, servicing, and parts fitted throughout the car’s life. As a historic vehicle, it is exempt from MOT and road tax.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
